How to select, maintain, and maximize your mother plant library A healthy mother plant is the foundation of every clone operation. At Prime Cuts Nursery, our mother plant library is the heart of what we do. Here's how we maintain it — and how you can maintain yours.
Selecting a Mother Plant
Not every plant deserves to be a mother. When selecting from seeds or existing clones, look for: Vigorous growth: Fast, healthy vegetative development Strong branching: Multiple nodes and abundant branching for maximum cuttings Disease resistance: Naturally resistant to common pests and pathogens Proven performance: Ideally from a flowered test run showing desired potency, terps, and yield HLVD-clean: Always PCR-test before making a plant a mother
Mother Plant Environment
Light cycle: 18/6 or 24/0 to keep plants in veg indefinitely Light intensity: Moderate — you want bushy growth, not stretching Temperature: 70-80°F with consistent conditions Container: 5-15 gallon pots depending on desired mother size Nutrients: Balanced veg formula at moderate strength. Heavy nitrogen promotes branching.
How Often to Take Cuttings
A healthy mother plant can provide cuttings every 2-3 weeks. Take cuts from the lower and middle branches — these have the highest rooting success rate. Never take more than 30% of the plant in one session, and allow 2 weeks of recovery between harvests.
When to Replace Mother Plants
Mother plants should be replaced every 6-12 months to maintain vigor. Over time, mothers can accumulate stress, become woody, and produce less vigorous cuttings. We periodically refresh our mothers from our best-performing clones. That's what we're here for. Browse our clone menu for HLVD-tested cuts from our professionally maintained mother library. We handle the mother plant care — you focus on growing.
