How to Avoid HLVD When Buying Cannabis Clones

5 things every grower should do before buying clones HLVD (Hop Latent Viroid) is the most widespread disease in cannabis. Studies estimate 30-70% of clones in circulation carry the viroid. If infected clones enter your garden, you're looking at 30-50% yield loss and dramatically lower THC — and it spreads to your other plants through contaminated tools. Here's how to protect yourself when buying clones.

1. Ask for PCR Test Results

The only reliable way to detect HLVD is PCR (polymerase chain reaction) testing. Visual inspection cannot detect it — many infected plants look perfectly healthy. Ask your nursery for PCR test documentation showing each mother plant tested negative. If they can't provide it, find a nursery that can.

2. Avoid Unverified Sources

Instagram sellers, pop-up clone markets, and anonymous online sellers rarely test for HLVD. While some may have clean genetics, the risk is enormous. One infected clone can contaminate your entire garden.

3. Quarantine New Clones

Even when buying from a tested nursery, keep new clones separated from your garden for 2 weeks. Use separate tools and gloves. This prevents any undetected infection from spreading.

4. Check Plant Quality Indicators

Root system — healthy white roots indicate strong, disease-free genetics Stem flexibility — brittle stems can indicate HLVD infection Uniform growth — stunted or uneven plants may be compromised Leaf color — healthy vibrant green without yellowing or wilting

5. Buy from Established Nurseries

Professional nurseries like Prime Cuts Nursery invest heavily in HLVD prevention: regular PCR testing of all mother plants, sterilized tools and facilities, quarantine protocols, and documented test results for every strain. Our HLVD testing program has been active since the viroid was first identified in cannabis. Related: Complete Clone Buying Guide | What Is a Cannabis Clone? | Pest & Disease ID
