How to Transplant Cannabis Clones

Step-by-step guide from clone to final container

When to Transplant

Transplant when roots are visible at the bottom of the starter container and new growth appears. For freshly rooted clones, this is typically 7-14 days after rooting. For teens, they're ready to transplant on arrival.

Step-by-Step Process

Prepare the container: Fill with pre-moistened soil or coco. First transplant: 1-gallon pot. Second transplant: 3-5 gallon (indoor) or 10-30+ gallon (outdoor) Pre-water: Water the new container lightly so the medium is moist but not saturated. pH 6.0-6.5 for soil, 5.5-6.0 for coco Remove gently: Squeeze the sides of the old container, invert, and support the stem between your fingers. Never pull by the stem Place in new container: Set the root ball in a pre-dug hole at the same depth as the original container Fill and firm: Gently fill around the root ball and press lightly to eliminate air pockets Water in: Light watering to settle the soil around roots. Add a very dilute nutrient solution (1/4 strength) Provide shade: Keep out of direct intense light for 24-48 hours while the plant recov

Hardening Off for Outdoor

If moving clones outdoors, harden off gradually over 5-7 days: start with 2-3 hours of morning sun, increasing exposure daily. This prevents sunburn and transplant shock. Check the growing calendar for timing.

Common Mistakes

Transplanting too early: Wait for visible roots. Underdeveloped roots lead to transplant shock Overwatering after transplant: The root zone is small — don't saturate a big pot Direct sun immediately: Clones need gradual acclimation to intense light Wrong pot size: Don't skip from starter to 10-gallon — step up gradually More: Root Clones | Troubleshooting | VPD Guide | Nutrients
