Fire OG

Also known as: Fire OG Kush, Fire Kush, The King of OGs

Breeder: Popularized by OG Raskal (OG Raskal Genetics, Los Angeles). Exact original breeder uncertain — common for OG-family clone-only cuts from late 1990s California.

Fire OG is widely regarded as one of the most potent phenotypes in the entire OG Kush family, earning the informal title "The King of OGs." Created in California during the late 1990s to early 2000s, it spread from Los Angeles dispensaries nationwide primarily through clone propagation. Its reputation rests on consistently high THC levels, a distinctive lemon-pine-fuel aroma, extremely dense and resinous bud structure, and the visually striking fiery orange/red pistils that give the strain its name. Fire OG delivers a powerful, long-lasting high that begins with euphoric cerebral effects before settling into deep, full-body sedation.

Lineage & Genetics

Cross: OG Kush x SFV OG Kush (San Fernando Valley OG)

OG Kush: the legendary West Coast hybrid believed to descend from Chemdawg '91, Lemon Thai, and a Hindu Kush landrace. Originated from an accidental pollination in South Florida in 1991. Matt "Bubba" Berger brought cuttings to Los Angeles in 1996; Josh D became the primary keeper. Known for euphoric, stress-relieving effects and earthy, pine, citrus, diesel aroma. SFV OG Kush (San Fernando Valley OG): a phenotype of OG Kush from California's San Fernando Valley, stabilized by Swerve of Cali Connection who crossed the SFV OG clone with an Afghani landrace to improve bud density and structure. Known for sharper lemon-fuel aroma and slightly more uplifting effects. Won 3rd place Indica at the 2012 HTCC Amsterdam and 1st place at the 2012 Denver Cannabis Cup.

Lineage Dispute

Some sources note the origin is debated — it may be an S1 of OG Kush, a cross of OG Kush and SFV OG Kush, or a hybrid of OG Kush and Chemdawg. The OG Kush x SFV OG cross is the most widely cited and accepted lineage.

Terpene Profile

DOMINANT

d-Limonene0.6-1.2% — Sharp citrus/lemon, mood elevation; dominant terpene that degrades quickly — store away from light and heat

DOMINANT

Myrcene0.4-0.8% — Earthy, herbal; drives sedation. Must exceed ~0.5% for characteristic couch-lock experience

SECONDARY

Beta-Caryophyllene0.3-0.6% — Spicy, peppery, diesel/fuel; binds CB2 receptors, anti-inflammatory, heat-stable

SECONDARY

Linalool0.1-0.3% — Subtle floral sweetness; anxiety relief, calming undertone

SECONDARY

Alpha-Pinene0.1-0.2% — Pine-forest brightness, alertness; volatile compound providing counterbalancing mental clarity

Aroma: Lemon-forward with prominent diesel/fuel undertones, accented by earth, pine, and black pepper. Often compared to Lemon Pledge furniture cleaner. Some batches show hints of skunk or mango. Aroma intensifies significantly during late flower and curing.

Flavor: Inhale opens with sharp citrus/lemon notes; exhale delivers a spicy, earthy, diesel-forward finish. The lemon-fuel combination is the signature — it burns on the inhale in a way that veteran OG smokers immediately recognize.

Effects & Experience

Onset: Fast-acting. Initial cerebral rush of euphoria and happiness within minutes. Tingling sensation and focused determination.

Cerebral stimulation gradually gives way to full-body warmth. Deep relaxation escalating to heavy sedation and couch-lock. Pronounced munchies. Not recommended for novice consumers due to extreme potency.

Duration: Long-lasting — 2-3 hours typical for experienced users. Early harvest (9 weeks) produces more energetic effects; late harvest (10-11 weeks) emphasizes sedative qualities.

Growing Characteristics

Flower Time
9-10 weeks (63-70 days); some phenotypes benefit from pushing to 10-11 weeks for maximum resin. Outdoor harvest mid to late October.
Yield (Indoor)
14-18 oz/m² (400-500 g/m²)
Yield (Outdoor)
15-22 oz/plant (425-600 g/plant)
Difficulty
Hard — recommended for experienced growers
Height
3-4 ft (80-120 cm) indoor; compact, bushy, classic indica structure with strong lateral branching. Moderate stretch — can double vegetative height during early flower.
Environment
Temperature 65-80°F (18-27°C). Can handle cooler temps better than many strains. Humidity veg 55-65%, flower 30-50% — CRITICAL to keep at 40% or below in late flower. Strong, constant airflow is mandatory. Performs well indoors and outdoors, but dense resinous buds do best protected from weather. Outdoor requires warm, dry, Mediterranean-type climate.

Grow Tips: TRAINING IS ESSENTIAL: Fire OG responds extremely well to training techniques. Topping at the 4th-5th node promotes multiple cola development — the bushy structure benefits enormously from opening up the canopy. LST (Low-Stress Training) by bending and tying branches exposes lower bud sites and dramatically increases final yield. SCROG (Screen of Green) is the recommended advanced technique — spread the canopy across a trellis net for maximum light penetration and even bud development, compensating for the compact growth habit. SOG is also viable for maximizing per-square-meter yield. FLOWERING PHASE: Switch to strict 12/12 light cycle with 12 hours absolute uninterrupted darkness. Switch to bloom fertilizer high in Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K), reduce Nitrogen. OG genetics have HIGH CalMag demands — supplement throughout flower. Deficiency shows as interveinal chlorosis and brown spots. Phosphorus is critical for bud development — ensure adequate P levels especially weeks 4-7 of flower. FEEDING STRATEGY: Moderate to heavy feeder but SENSITIVE to overfeeding — nutrient burn occurs quickly. Leafly specifically recommends growing hydroponically if less confident about feeding, as hydro allows more precise nutrient control. Start at 50-75% of manufacturer-recommended dosages and ramp up based on plant response. Watch leaf tips for first signs of burn (yellowing/curling tips). Flush with plain pH'd water for 1-2 weeks before harvest to improve flavor and smoothness. MOLD AND MILDEW PREVENTION: The #1 threat to Fire OG. Dense bud structure traps moisture creating ideal conditions for botrytis (bud rot) and powdery mildew. Prevention is paramount — control humidity, ensure airflow, defoliate strategically to improve air circulation within the canopy. Heavy resin production attracts spider mites and thrips — implement preventive IPM with regular scouting. Neem oil or insecticidal soaps during veg; biological controls (predatory mites, Beauveria bassiana) preferred during flower. Strategic leaf removal during weeks 1 and 3 of flower improves airflow to dense inner buds. Do not over-defoliate — Fire OG needs leaf surface area to power heavy resin production. HARVEST TIMING: Monitor trichomes with a jeweler's loupe or digital microscope. Harvest when trichomes are mostly cloudy with ~10-20% amber for peak potency. Early harvest (9 weeks) gives more energetic, cerebral-forward effects. Late harvest (10-11 weeks) produces heavier sedation, stronger body effects, maximum bud density and resin. The lemon-pine-diesel aroma intensifies dramatically in the final 2 weeks — if the smell isn't punching you in the face, the plant may need more time. Buds are deceptively heavy — extreme density means harvests weigh more than they appear by volume. DRYING AND CURING: Dry slowly in a dark room at 60°F / 60% RH for 10-14 days. The dense buds retain interior moisture longer than fluffier strains — confirm stems snap cleanly (not bend) before jarring. Cure in airtight glass jars for minimum 2-4 weeks, burping daily for the first week. Cherry Cookies (a direct Fire OG child) is noted for holding terpenes in flower form much longer than other strains, sometimes up to a year if stored properly — this terpene retention is an inherited Fire OG trait. For long-term storage: nitrogen-flushed packaging and amber glass at <70°F preserves terpene integrity 12+ months. COMMON MISTAKES: High humidity during flower (the single most common failure — dense buds rot from inside out), overfeeding (hungry but sensitive, nutrient burn appears fast), rushing harvest (pulling at 8 weeks leaves significant potency and terpene expression on the table), skipping training (untrained plants produce significantly lower yields), inadequate airflow (stagnant air around dense buds creates microclimates where mold develops even with correct humidity readings).

History & Origin

Late 1990s-early 2000s: Fire OG created in California, likely Los Angeles area, by crossing OG Kush with SFV OG Kush. Initially circulated as a clone-only cut through dispensaries and grower networks. Mid-2000s: OG Raskal Genetics popularized Fire OG, establishing it as a signature strain. Early 2000s onward: Relentless Genetics developed the Fire OG BX1 and BX2 backcross lines, creating a stable male that enabled Cherry Cookies, Fire Cherry Cookies, and dozens of hybrids. Early 2010s: BC Bud Depot crossed GSC with Fire OG to create Animal Cookies. 2013: Jason Dias of Lumpy's Flowers crossed Sour Apple with Animal Cookies to create Apple Fritter — making Fire OG a grandparent of one of the decade's most commercially successful strains. 2019: Fire OG won Leafly's Best OG Kush contest.
