Hash Plant
Also known as: Hashplant, HP
Breeder: Sensi Seeds (via Nevil Schoenmakers / The Seed Bank, 1987)
Hash Plant is the archetypal resin-production cultivar — a living definition of the stocky, chunky Afghanica genotype, descended from one of the finest hash-making landraces ever brought from the Hindu Kush to the West. The original female clone was transported to the Netherlands in the mid-1980s and became a foundational building block for numerous Sensi Seeds hybrids before being stabilized into a seed line via backcrossing with Northern Lights #1. The result was so potent that even experienced Dutch smokers had trouble finishing a single joint. Its extraordinarily short flowering time (40–45 days), compact structure, and massive trichome coverage make it ideal for indoor cultivation and hash extraction.
Lineage & Genetics
Cross: Hash Plant (PNW clone) x (Hash Plant x Northern Lights #1)
The Hash Plant mother is a pure Afghanica clone developed in the US Pacific Northwest from Hindu Kush landrace genetics, prized for extreme resin output and compact growth. Northern Lights #1 is another elite pure Afghan indica from Nevil's breeding program (Purest Indica x Afghani), selected for vigor, short flowering, and heavy trichome production. Both parents represent the royal families of Afghanica genetics.
Lineage Dispute
The original Hash Plant clone's provenance is uncertain. Sensi Seeds confirms it arrived from the Pacific Northwest USA via Nevil circa 1984–85, but whether it came from Sam the Skunkman or another breeder is undocumented. The final seed strain is a confirmed backcross: a 50/50 HP×NL#1 male crossed back to the original HP mother, yielding a 75% HP / 25% NL#1 hybrid.

Aroma: Deep, rich Afghani earthiness with prominent spicy-woody notes and a distinct old-school hashish pungency. The dried buds develop a brittle trichome surface that gives off the unmistakable scent of raw resin glands — described by growers as 'sweet Afghan hash smell' that takes older consumers on a trip back in time.
Flavor: Dominated by the spicy-sharp bite of smouldering resin glands, a sensation that quickly becomes indistinguishable from the effect itself. Heavy, smooth smoke with woody-earthy undertones and a hashish finish. The taste mirrors high-quality pressed charas — gentle hashish on the palate with exceptional complexity beneath.
Effects & Experience
Onset: Rapid — the instant vaporization of dense trichome layers accelerates delivery. Initial mild euphoria and a brief sativa-like head rush give way within 10–15 minutes to full indica dominance.
Breathtakingly powerful body stone with deep physical relaxation and sedation. Heavy couch-lock, munchies, and time distortion are commonly reported. Described as 'blissful' and 'narcotic' rather than anxious or racy.
Duration: Long-lasting — the heavy body effects persist for 2–3 hours with residual sedation extending well beyond.

Growing Characteristics
Grow Tips: Ideal for Sea of Green (SOG) — 16–25 plants/m² with minimal veg (2–4 weeks) for fast turnover. Easy to clone; the original was maintained as clone-only for years before seed stabilization. Dense buds are susceptible to botrytis — prioritize airflow, defoliate inner canopy, and keep RH below 45% in flower. Responds well to hydroponics; Sensi Seeds specifically recommends indoor hydro for this strain. Avoid overfeeding in final weeks of flower to preserve resin quality and terpene profile. For hash production: harvest when trichomes are milky-to-amber, then flash-freeze immediately for bubble hash or dry for sift/charas. Lollipop lower branches to prevent mold and redirect energy to top colas. Harvesting slightly later (more amber trichomes) enhances sedative effects.
History & Origin
Hash Plant's story begins in the Hindu Kush mountains where Afghan landraces were cultivated for centuries to produce charas and pressed hashish. Seeds or cuttings made their way to the US Pacific Northwest, where an exceptional female was selected and maintained as a clone. Around 1984–85, Nevil Schoenmakers acquired this clone and brought it to the Netherlands. In his Seed Bank breeding labs, the clone became a cornerstone of multiple hybrid programs. To create a worthy seed line, Nevil crossed the HP female with a Northern Lights #1 male, then backcrossed the resulting hybrid male to the original HP mother. Released commercially in 1987 through The Seed Bank (later absorbed into Sensi Seeds), Hash Plant has remained in continuous production for nearly 40 years.
