Hindu Kush
Also known as: Hindi Kush, HK, Pure Kush
Breeder: Pure landrace — no single breeder. Western stabilization by Sensi Seeds (Netherlands, early 1980s) from seeds collected along the Hippie Trail.
Hindu Kush is one of the most historically significant cannabis strains in existence, often called the "grandmother of all cannabis" for its role as the genetic foundation of the entire modern Kush family — including OG Kush, Bubba Kush, Master Kush, Purple Kush, and through OG Kush, the entire GSC/Gelato/Wedding Cake dynasty. For centuries, farmers in the Hindu Kush valleys hand-selected the most resinous plants for hash production. The thick trichome blanket traces directly to this selection pressure — originally an adaptation to extreme UV at high altitude, then amplified by human selection for charas quality. It became one of the four foundational imported cultivars (alongside Original Haze, Afghani #1, and Skunk #1) that launched the European cannabis seed industry. High Times ranked it #21 on their "25 Greatest Strains of All Time" list.
Lineage & Genetics
Cross: Pure landrace indica from the Hindu Kush mountain range (Afghanistan/Pakistan border)
Hindu Kush is not a cross — it is an unbroken landrace line. Wild landrace Cannabis indica from the Hindu Kush mountains evolved naturally in a 500-mile chain stretching from central Afghanistan through northwestern Pakistan into southeastern Tajikistan. The region's harsh conditions (high altitude, cold nights, arid soil, intense UV) selected for short, stocky, resin-heavy plants over hundreds to thousands of years. Local farming communities cultivated specifically for charas and pressed hashish production. Western breeders (notably Sensi Seeds) inbred and stabilized selected seed lots brought from Afghanistan in the late 1970s, but no foreign genetics were introduced.
Terpene Profile
Myrcene — 0.8-1.3% — Earthy, musky, herbal; drives the damp earth savory base and sedation
Caryophyllene — 0.5-0.9% — Spicy, peppery; adds warmth and depth; binds CB2 receptors
Limonene — 0.3-0.5% — Subtle citrus brightness; balances the earthiness
Alpha-Pinene — 0.3-0.6% — Fresh pine / evergreen sharpness
Humulene — Trace-0.3% — Woody, earthy; associated with appetite suppression
Aroma: Rich, layered bouquet of earthy sandalwood, spicy incense, musky hash, sweet pine, and subtle herbal sharpness. Breaking open a bud releases an unmistakable old-world hash scent — warm, resinous, and grounding. The aroma intensifies dramatically during weeks 4-6 of flowering when resin production peaks.
Flavor: Inhale delivers woody earth and sweet pine with peppery spice on the mid-palate. Exhale brings sandalwood and subtle citrus with lingering hash-like muskiness. The overall profile has been compared to burning incense — warm, savory, and complex without the fruit/dessert/fuel notes of modern hybrids. A properly cured Hindu Kush has a smooth, almost creamy smoke quality.
Effects & Experience
Onset: Gentle cerebral warmth within minutes — mild euphoria, enhanced sensory awareness, and a calming mental stillness.
The indica body effect builds steadily into deep physical relaxation, muscle tension relief, and progressive couch-lock. Higher doses induce strong sedation and sleepiness. Leafly reports 40% stress relief, 36% pain relief, 34% anxiety relief. Evening/nighttime strain — will put you to sleep.
Duration: Long-lasting; effects typically persist 2-3 hours.

Growing Characteristics
Grow Tips: Hindu Kush is widely considered one of the easiest strains for beginners. Its landrace genetics give it exceptional hardiness, genetic stability, and tolerance for less-than-perfect conditions. SOG (SEA OF GREEN) IS THE GOLD STANDARD: Pack multiple clones or seedlings at ~1 plant per square foot in 3-5 gallon fabric pots. Keep veg short (1-3 weeks) and flip early. The strain's dominant central cola and minimal lateral branching make it a natural SOG candidate. Skip topping in pure SOG setups. TOPPING: If not running SOG, top once above the 4th-5th node to create multiple even colas. LOLLIPOPPING (mandatory in dense canopies): Remove the bottom 20-30% of foliage ~2 weeks into flowering. Eliminates dead-air zones where mold thrives and redirects energy to top colas. LST works well to open the bushy canopy for light penetration — begin early in veg by gently bending stems outward, stop all major training before flower. DEFOLIATION: Keep it conservative. Indica lines can stunt with aggressive defoliation. Lightly thin interior fan leaves in weeks 2-3 of flower — just enough to reduce humidity pockets. NUTRIENTS: Standard nitrogen-heavy feeding in veg. Go heavy on CalMag especially in coco. pH 6.2-6.6 (soil) or 5.8-6.3 (hydro). Flower: shift to 1-3-2 (N-P-K) ratio. Potassium is critical for cannabinoid and terpene synthesis. Reduce nitrogen after week 3 of flower to preserve terpene expression. EC 1.2-1.6 in veg, 1.6-2.0 in peak flower. Kush lines tolerate moderate-to-heavy feeding. Standard 1-2 week flush before harvest. LIGHTING: Veg 18-20 hours with blue-spectrum (5500-6500K) to keep internode spacing short. Flower 12/12 with red-spectrum (2700-3000K), aim for PPFD 600-900 at canopy. 300-600W LED full-spectrum panels ideal for 4x4 tent. FLOWERING STAGES: Weeks 1-3 minimal stretch, massive fan leaves, thickened stalk. Weeks 4-6 resin production ramps aggressively, room fills with incense/hash aroma. Weeks 7-8 buds harden significantly, trichome coverage peaks to silver/white frost. HARVEST: Mostly cloudy trichomes with ~20% amber for maximum relaxation. Pistils 70-80% darkened/curled. Ready by late September-early October outdoors — fast enough to beat autumn rains. DRYING: Slow-dry at 60°F / 60% RH for 10-14 days. CURING: Jar cure for minimum 4 weeks (6+ weeks ideal). The spicy sandalwood/incense terpene profile develops significantly during a long cure — Hindu Kush rewards patience here more than most strains. MEDIUM: Rich, well-draining soil with organic compost. Living soil or super-soil works beautifully. Coco/perlite 70/30 performs well for SOG. Hindu Kush takes off in hydro, producing large resinous buds — DWC and ebb-and-flow both work. PEST AND DISEASE: Naturally hardy — evolved in harsh mountain conditions, handles cold snaps, wind stress, and minor nutrient imbalances better than most. Pests rarely trouble it outdoors. Primary vulnerability is bud rot (Botrytis) from dense compact bud structure trapping moisture. Manage humidity and airflow aggressively during flowering. Powdery mildew can appear if airflow is poor. WHY IT'S GREAT FOR BEGINNERS: Forgiving of minor temperature swings, light schedule imprecision, and feeding mistakes. Grows uniformly from seed thanks to decades of stabilization. Finishes fast. Produces resinous, visually impressive buds even with a simple setup. HASH PRODUCTION: Hindu Kush's extreme trichome density makes it an exceptional hash-making strain — this is what the plant was selected for over centuries. Dry sift, bubble hash, and rosin all perform well. If growing specifically for hash production, Hindu Kush is one of the best choices in the entire cannabis gene pool. PURPLE EXPRESSION: Drop night temps by ~10°F during final 2 weeks to mimic cold mountain nights of its homeland — stimulates both resin production and can trigger purple coloration.
History & Origin
Ancient to pre-1960s: Wild and cultivated cannabis grows in the Hindu Kush mountain valleys for centuries, possibly millennia. Selective breeding by local farmers focuses on resin production for charas and pressed hashish. 1960s-1970s: Western travelers on the Hippie Trail discover Hindu Kush cannabis; seeds collected and brought to the US and Europe. Late 1970s: Among the first indica genetics to reach North American growers, revolutionizing indoor growing with short, fast-flowering structure. Early 1980s: Seeds reach the Netherlands where breeders (notably Sensi Seeds) stabilize the genetics. Becomes one of the Big Four alongside Original Haze, Afghani #1, and Skunk #1. 1992-1993: Master Kush (Hindu Kush x Skunk #1) wins second place at the Cannabis Cup two years running. Early-mid 1990s: Hindu Kush genetics crossed with Chemdawg in Southern California to create OG Kush. 2000s-present: Through OG Kush, Hindu Kush DNA flows into GSC, Gelato, Wedding Cake, and hundreds of modern crosses.
