Stardawg
Also known as: Star Dawg, Stardog
Breeder: JJ Edwards (JJ NYC) / Top Dawg Seeds
One of the most important Chemdawg descendants in modern cannabis breeding. Released in 2011, it rapidly became a cultural phenomenon — particularly in the United Kingdom where it remains one of the most recognized strains. Its appeal lies in extreme trichome production giving buds a star-covered appearance, pungent diesel-forward aroma, and consistent performance as a breeding stud. The original seeds were released in very limited runs with the father plant destroyed afterward. SeedFinder lists 186 direct descendants, making it one of the most prolific breeding parents of the 2010s.
Lineage & Genetics
Cross: Chemdawg 4 x Tres Dawg
Chemdawg #4 (one of the phenotypes from the original 13 Chemdog seeds found at a 1991 Grateful Dead concert) is an indica-dominant hybrid contributing distinct industrial lemon-cleaner/Lemon Pledge aroma, massive resin production, heavy yields, and the heavy trichome coverage. Tres Dawg (Chemdawg D x Afghani #1 from Sensi Seeds, backcrossed twice to Chem D, bred by JJ NYC) is an indica-dominant hybrid contributing diesel-rich nose with hash-forward earthiness, dense tight bud structure, structural integrity with thick stems, manageable height, tight internodes, and faster flowering.
Terpene Profile
Beta-Caryophyllene — Spicy, peppery, diesel bite; CB2 receptor agonist; 0.3-0.8%
Myrcene — Earthy, musky, herbal; enhances THC absorption; 0.4-1.0%
Limonene — Citrus brightness, lemon zest; mood elevation; 0.2-0.6%
Humulene — Woody, hoppy; modulates caryophyllene's spice; 0.1-0.3%
Alpha/Beta-Pinene — Pine-fresh sharpness; perceived focus lift; 0.1-0.3% combined
Linalool — Floral, calming; softens the diesel edges; 0.05-0.15%
Aroma: Sharp diesel fuel layered over earthy pine with bright citrus overtones. Room-filling and immediately recognizable — described as nostril-singeing. Some phenos throw subtle guava/tropical sweetness. The Guava cut has more tropical top notes while Corey Haim and Illuminati cuts lean harder into acrid chemical fuel.
Flavor: Diesel-forward with chemical/lemon-cleaner sharpness from the Chem 4 heritage on inhale. Earthy, piney with smooth lingering finish on exhale. The caryophyllene-driven spice becomes more prominent on the exhale.
Effects & Experience
Onset: Fast-acting cerebral rush — energetic, focused, and euphoric
Uplifting and talkative with enhanced creativity and sociability. A warm physical relaxation builds over 30-60 minutes, grounding the cerebral energy without full sedation. The Illuminati and Corey Haim cuts are significantly more potent and can cause anxiety in low-tolerance users.
Duration: Long-lasting effects

Growing Characteristics
Grow Tips: Stardawg grows upright and tall and is not naturally bushy. Without training it produces a single dominant cola with limited lateral development — training is essential to maximize yield and manage height. Recommended protocol: top above the 4th or 5th node to break apical dominance, begin LST immediately after topping to create a flat even canopy, use ScrOG (weave branches through trellis net) which is particularly productive given the vigorous stretch. Expect 40-60% stretch after the flip to 12/12 — plan canopy height accordingly and flip early in short tents. Allow 4 days of recovery after topping before flipping. Moderate defoliation in weeks 1 and 3 of flower improves airflow and light penetration. The smell is extreme — carbon filtration is mandatory and you may need multiple filters or supplemental odor control. Stardawg is a heavy feeder that responds well to robust nutrient programs. Proven nutrient regimen from a 6-cycle grower: Canna Coco range (A+B at 3ml/L, Cannazym at 2ml/L, CalMag at 0.5ml/L during veg) in 70% coco / 30% perlite, 12L fabric pots, hand-fed drain-to-waste, averaging 4.5 oz/plant consistently. EC targets: 1.0-1.4 veg, 1.4-1.8 flower. pH 6.0-6.5 soil, 5.8-6.2 coco/hydro. Flush with plain water 1-2 weeks before harvest. Trichome production is exceptional — the crystalline coverage makes it excellent for extraction (hash, rosin, concentrates). Pest and mold resistance is above average — multiple sources note resilience making it forgiving in imperfect environments. Watch for hermaphroditism from the Chem heritage though JJ noted the Tres Dawg male's stability — lots of people say Chems are unstable but this has been consistent with not throwing hermaphrodites. Still minimize stress (light leaks, temperature swings). The Purple Tres Dawg male (3rd release) throws purple phenotypes in all offspring. Harvest when all trichomes are cloudy with 15-20% amber for peak potency with balanced body effect. Grower-submitted real data: outdoor greenhouse with supplemental light yielded 652g at 24.1% THC in 9 weeks (Colorado); 5x5 tent with 1000W HPS, ScrOG + topping yielded 422g at 24.1% THC in 9 weeks.
History & Origin
JJ NYC began breeding around 2006-2007 in the NYC underground cannabis scene. He traded Sour Diesel with AJ for Chem 91 to begin his Chemdawg preservation project. He crossed Chem D x Afghani #1 (Sensi Seeds) and backcrossed twice to create Tres Dawg around 2006-2007. Around 2008-2010, JJ crossed Chemdawg #4 x Tres Dawg to create Stardawg. First seeds released in 2011 (regular only, very limited). The Guava phenotype won 1st Place Best Sativa at the 2012 Denver HTCC. Four total releases occurred (last around 2016), each using a different Tres Dawg male. The third purple release produced the Kate Upton phenotype discovered by Green Dot Labs in Boulder, which became the most widely used in breeding. Named after "Stardog Champion" by Mother Love Bone.
