Blueberry

Also known as: Berry Blue

Breeder: DJ Short (Daniel John Short), Eugene, Oregon

Blueberry is one of the most historically significant indica cultivars ever created. Developed in the late 1970s-1980s by DJ Short in Oregon, it introduced an entirely new flavor category to cannabis — before Blueberry, the lexicon was limited to skunky, earthy, piney, and hashy. DJ Short bred the first strain that genuinely smelled and tasted of fresh berries, built from scratch using Thai and Afghan landrace genetics. Its legendary status was cemented in 2000 when it won Best Indica at the High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam, competing against established Dutch varieties on their home turf. It is the direct parent of Blue Dream (the most popular strain in California during the 2010s), Blue Cheese, and dozens of other cultivars. DJ Short leveraged transgressive segregation — where hybrid offspring express traits exceeding either parent — to discover the berry phenotype in the F2 generation.

Lineage & Genetics

Cross: Highland Thai (Juicy Fruit Thai) x Purple Thai (Chocolate Thai x Highland Oaxaca Gold) x Afghani Indica

Parent strains in encyclopedia:Afghani

Highland Thai (Juicy Fruit Thai): a pure landrace sativa from Thailand, likely entering the US via Vietnam War veterans in the early-to-mid 1970s. DJ Short selected a phenotype carrying an unusual fruity/berry terpene profile atypical for Thai genetics. Demanding 12-16 week flowering time, soaring cerebral effects, and the essential terpene foundation for Blueberry's signature. Purple Thai (Oregon Purple Thai): a first-generation hybrid of Chocolate Thai x Highland Oaxaca Gold, stabilized by Oregon growers. Medium-tall with symmetric structure, shorter side branches, dominant main stalk. Deep purple coloration, spicy-berry aromas. Contributed anthocyanin production and motivational energy. Afghani Indica: a pure indica landrace male, one generation removed from Afghanistan, sourced via California/Southern Oregon in 1979. Provided dense bud structure, heavy resin production, compact plant height, and a manageable 7-9 week flowering period — transforming the impractical 16-week Thai flowering time into something growable indoors.

Terpene Profile

DOMINANT

Myrcene4.0-5.0% — Earthy, musky base; amplifies sedative effect; the couch-lock terpene

DOMINANT

Beta-Caryophyllene1.5-2.0% — Subtle black-pepper spice; anti-inflammatory; CB2 receptor agonist

SECONDARY

Alpha-Pinene0.7-1.0% — Fresh pine/herbal freshness; mental clarity counterbalance

SECONDARY

Linalool0.3-0.8% — Floral/lavender calming note; anxiety relief

SECONDARY

LimoneneTrace-0.5% — Faint citrus lift

Aroma: Unmistakable fresh blueberries upon jar-open, backed by earthy Kush spice and subtle vanilla sweetness. Breaking buds reveals deeper notes of grape, floral lavender, and woody pine. Some phenotypes carry a faint fuel/chem undertone. Extremely pungent during peak flowering. The berry aroma intensifies dramatically with a proper 2-4 week cure — fresh-dried Blueberry can smell more generically earthy.

Flavor: Sweet blueberry dominates the inhale with a smooth, creamy mouthfeel. The exhale reveals earthy undertones, vanilla, and lingering berry sweetness. Often compared to blueberry Pop-Tarts or fresh blueberry muffins. The smoke is notably smooth for an indica. The signature blueberry nose develops with time during curing.

Effects & Experience

Onset: Gentle euphoria and mood elevation within 0-10 minutes; a pleasant head-high that feels uplifting yet calm. Mental clarity maintained; some users report mild creativity.

Full-body relaxation builds progressively at 10-30 minutes. Warmth spreads through limbs, stress and muscle tension dissolve. The euphoric but grounded character is distinctive — present without being incapacitating. Deep physical sedation takes over at higher doses with couch-lock, appetite stimulation, and heavy eyes transitioning to sleep.

Duration: 3-5 hours total, with residual relaxation/sleepiness.

Growing Characteristics

Flower Time
8-10 weeks (most phenos finish 9 weeks); outdoor harvest late September to mid-October
Yield (Indoor)
400-550 g/m²
Yield (Outdoor)
500-700 g/plant (up to 25 oz in ideal conditions)
Difficulty
Intermediate (not beginner-friendly)
Height
90-130 cm (compact) indoor; up to 150-180 cm outdoor
Environment
Mild, dry, temperate climate. Does not tolerate high humidity. Temperature day 70-80°F (21-27°C), night 65-70°F in veg; drop to 55-63°F (13-17°C) in final 2-3 weeks of flower to trigger anthocyanin production (purple/blue coloration). Humidity veg 60-70%, flower 40-50%, final 2 weeks 35-40%. High-quality LED or HPS, PPFD 400-600 in veg, 600-900 in flower. Strict 12/12 cycle in flower — deviating can delay bud development.

Grow Tips: NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT IS CRITICAL — Blueberry is a notoriously light feeder and nutrient-sensitive plant. This is the single most important growing consideration. EC targets: 1.2-1.6 veg, max 2.0 at peak flowering — lower than most indicas. Particularly sensitive to excess nitrogen in late veg and early flower; heavy N causes leaf clawing, pH disruption, and reduced resin production. Start nutrients at 50-60% of manufacturer's recommended dose and increase only if the plant shows hunger (light green lower leaves). N:P:K ratios: Veg = 3:1:2, Bloom = 1:3:2 — switch promptly at flip. Flush thoroughly for final 10-14 days before harvest with plain pH'd water to dramatically improve smoothness and berry flavor. Monitor runoff pH and EC regularly — if runoff EC spikes above input, the medium is accumulating salts, flush immediately. Some phenotypes show Cal-Mag deficiency in mid-flower when buds are bulking; add Cal-Mag proactively in coco or filtered water. Dutch Passion notes: "She tends to suit the more experienced grower... can be a fussy feeder." TRAINING: LST (Low-Stress Training) is highly recommended — bend and tie branches to open the canopy. Topping is effective but use sparingly — maximum 2 tops, then LST to spread canopy. Over-topping adds extra weeks because Blueberry's growth is relatively slow. Top above the 5th node once 5-7 true nodes are established. Remove the first (lowest) node. Lollipopping: remove the bottom 1/3 of growth (dead zone for light penetration on this bushy plant) to force energy to tops and dramatically improve top-cola size. Do NOT do aggressive manifolding — the slow growth rate makes this technique impractical and can add 2+ weeks to veg. ENVIRONMENTAL STABILITY: Blueberry does NOT tolerate environmental swings. Temperature spikes, humidity fluctuations, and irregular light schedules stress this strain more than most. Keep conditions rock-steady. MOLD SUSCEPTIBILITY: HIGH. Dense, tightly-packed bud structure retains moisture internally. Bud rot (Botrytis) is the primary threat especially in late flower as buds fatten. Strong airflow, dehumidification in late flower, proper plant spacing, avoid overhead watering in flower, inspect large colas by gently pulling them apart to check for grey mold inside. PHENOTYPE VARIATION: Expect significant variation from seed — a legacy of F2/F3 genetic diversity. Purple phenos have heavy anthocyanin expression, bluer/purple coloration, often slightly lower yield but extraordinary bag appeal and terpene expression. Green phenos are less colorful but often slightly higher yielding, can be encouraged to purple with cold night temps. Occasional sativa-leaning outliers from Thai genetics expressing through, these take 10+ weeks. Recommendation: pop multiple seeds, identify the best phenotype, and clone it. CLONING DIFFICULTY: Blueberry is notoriously difficult to clone compared to most indicas. Cuttings root slowly with lower success rate. Take cuttings during early-to-mid veg (not late), use rooting hormone gel, keep clone humidity at 80%+ using a dome, expect 10-14 days for roots vs typical 7-10 for easier strains. Once rooted, clones establish well and produce reliably. HARVEST TIMING: 70-80% milky white trichomes with 20-30% amber for maximum body effect and berry terpene expression. Earlier harvest (mostly milky, minimal amber) produces more uplifting, less sedative effect. Don't rush — Blueberry's terpene profile deepens significantly in the final week. POST-HARVEST: Slow dry at 60°F / 60% humidity for 10-14 days — the berry nose develops during slow drying. Cure minimum 2 weeks in sealed jars, burping daily for 5 minutes. The signature blueberry aroma intensifies dramatically between weeks 2-4 of cure. Fresh-dried Blueberry often smells generically earthy — don't judge it until properly cured. Berry terpenes degrade faster than average with light/heat exposure — store in dark, cool conditions (<70°F). COMMON MISTAKES: Overfeeding (the #1 killer of Blueberry grows — when in doubt, feed less), ignoring airflow (dense buds + still air = guaranteed mold), harvesting too early (terpenes still developing in final days), insufficient cure (the blueberry flavor requires patience), too much topping (slows growth significantly, use LST instead), high humidity in late flower (keep below 45% once buds are stacking).
