Lemon Thai

Also known as: LT

Breeder: Dutch Flowers (defunct underground collective)

Lemon Thai is a sativa-dominant hybrid created by the now-defunct Dutch Flowers collective, widely recognized as one of the three parent strains of OG Kush alongside Chemdawg and Hindu Kush. The strain emerged from Hawaiian grower circles and became a cornerstone of West Coast breeding in the 1990s Northern California scene. Its signature 'lemon pledge' citrus aroma and clear-headed, introspective cerebral high made it a favorite among creative types and daytime users. Though pure Lemon Thai seeds are now extremely rare, its genetics survive through OG Kush and its 46+ documented direct crosses on SeedFinder. The strain is notable for producing Hawaiian-looking phenotypes despite its Thai naming, with broad seedling leaves that transition to narrow sativa foliage at flower onset.

Lineage & Genetics

Cross: Thai Landrace x Hawaiian

Parent strains in encyclopedia:Thai

The Thai Landrace parent contributes the cerebral, energetic, non-paranoid high and the classic Thai spice on the exhale. The Hawaiian parent is credited with the dominant citrus-lemon terpene profile, the more manageable flowering time (compared to pure Thai lines which can run 16–20+ weeks), improved bud structure and resin production, and the broader-leafed vegetative phenotype. Dutch Flowers specifically noted the plants 'didnt look like Thai to us, rather Hawaiian in phenotype, smell and high,' indicating the Hawaiian parent's traits were dominant in expression.

Lineage Dispute

Dutch Flowers' own description states it was 'obtained from some folks out of Hawaii' and appeared more Hawaiian than Thai in phenotype, smell, and high. SeedFinder lists the cross as 'Thailand Sativa x Hawaii [probably]' — the 'probably' qualifier is SeedFinder's own editorial note reflecting that the exact Thai and Hawaiian parent varieties are unknown. Fusion Seeds describes it as 'a Thai hybrid acclimatized to the Hawaiian Islands.' One minority source (HoliMoli) claims 'Lemon Kush x Thai' parentage, but this is unsupported by the breeder or any seed bank records. Blackbird Preservations notes 'word has it the Thai was originally outcrossed by DF,' suggesting the original Dutch Flowers stock may not have been a simple F1 but an earlier working line.

Terpene Profile

DOMINANT

Aroma: Trademark citrus 'lemon pledge' odor with a hint of peppermint. Phenotype variation ranges from sweet lemon to bitter lemon to lemon-melon, all underlaid by classic Thai spice and herbal notes. Some growers report a lemon pastry hit on the smoother phenos and a sharper zesty lemon on the more colorful phenos.

Flavor: Sharp tangy lemon on the inhale with earthy, herbal, spicy Thai flavors on the exhale. Range across phenotypes includes minty lemon, sweet pink lemonade, bitter lemon, and lemon-melon. The lemon character is persistent and coats the palate.

Effects & Experience

Onset: Fast-acting cerebral rush with immediate mood elevation and mental clarity within the first few minutes.

Almost entirely cerebral — described by Dutch Flowers as 'clear mental surfing' without a hint of paranoia. Introspective and thoughtful rather than racy or anxious. Excellent positive-mood inducer that fosters deep thoughts, making it a favorite for musicians and artists. Chronic tokers can use it during the day and remain productive if not overdone.

Duration: Long-lasting with a slow tolerance buildup. Overconsumption shifts the experience from cerebral to a crushing lethargic body stone with potential couch-lock.

Growing Characteristics

Flower Time
9–13 weeks (Dutch Flowers original: ~9 weeks; Fusion F2: 11–13 weeks; Blackbird preservation: 12–13 weeks)
Yield (Indoor)
400–600+ g/m² (Fusion Seeds reports 600+ g/m²; Cannapedia reports 400–500 g/m²)
Yield (Outdoor)
550–800 g/plant in optimal conditions
Difficulty
Moderate — straightforward once space requirements are met, but can be fussy if root-bound
Height
5–10 feet (150–300 cm); grows broad leaves as a seedling but shows full sativa stretch at onset of flower
Environment
Prefers warm, sunny climates similar to Hawaiian/Thai origins. Thrives outdoors in Mediterranean conditions. Indoor growers need ample vertical space or must employ training.

Grow Tips: Give ample root space — this strain gets fussy when root-bound and will underperform significantly in small containers. Expect a phenotype shift: broad-leafed seedlings transition to narrow sativa foliage and vigorous stretch at flower onset. Plan vertical space accordingly. SCROG or LST recommended indoors to manage the sativa stretch and maximize the canopy for the dense bud sites. Two main genotypes reported by Blackbird Preservations: vibrant green phenos with smooth lemon pastry flavor, and more colorful phenos with sharper zesty lemon — both are desirable. Monitor humidity in late flower; the dense, resinous buds can be susceptible to mold despite the open sativa structure. Produces sativa-like dense buds with heavy crystal/trichome coverage — excellent bag appeal and resin production for extractions. Harvest timing matters: the cerebral high is best preserved by harvesting when trichomes are mostly cloudy with minimal amber.

History & Origin

Lemon Thai was created by Dutch Flowers, a now-defunct underground seed collective that distributed the strain as part of a multi-variety pack. The genetics were obtained from growers in Hawaii, where a Thai landrace had been acclimatized to the islands. Dutch Flowers noted the plants expressed more Hawaiian than Thai characteristics. The strain circulated through Northern California in the 1990s, where it became a foundational building block of the West Coast genetic pool. Its most consequential legacy is as one of three parents of OG Kush — the 1991 Florida accidental pollination event that produced OG Kush involved Chemdawg 91, Hindu Kush, and Lemon Thai stock. Lemon Thai contributed the bright citrus terpene profile and sativa-influenced cerebral effects that distinguish OG Kush from pure indica Kush varieties. After Dutch Flowers ceased operations, the genetics were preserved through multiple channels: Vision Creator and Bodhi maintained original stock that Blackbird Preservations later worked with, Fusion Seeds released F2 generations, and the Derg Corra Collective (DCC) did reproduction work using an F1 male from an original Dutch Flowers pack crossed with Fusion F3 females. Today SeedFinder lists 7 distinct Lemon Thai versions across different breeders, and 46 direct hybrid descendants from the Dutch Flowers original alone.
