Sour Diesel
Also known as: Sour D, ECSD, Sour Deez
Breeder: Accidental cross (New York City, ~1995)
Sour Diesel is a sativa-dominant hybrid that emerged from New York City's underground cannabis scene in the mid-1990s and became inseparable from the late-'90s hip-hop culture. Known for its unmistakable pungent, fuel-forward aroma and fast-acting cerebral effects, it remains a top-selling cultivar three decades after its creation. Its cultural impact exceeds its competition résumé — it defined an era and a region.
Lineage & Genetics
Cross: Original Diesel (Chemdawg 91 x Super Skunk/NL) x DNL
Chemdawg 91 was selected from bagseed acquired at a Grateful Dead concert in 1991 by Greg 'Chemdog' Krzanowski. The Super Skunk/Northern Lights parent contributed resin density and skunk undertones. DNL (if included) is Northern Lights/Shiva x Hawaiian. Key figure A.J. (Joe Murray) received the keeper clone from Weasel and distributed it across NYC.
Lineage Dispute
A simplified version lists the cross as simply Chemdawg 91 x Super Skunk, omitting the DNL (Northern Lights/Shiva x Hawaiian) contribution. The more detailed three-way accidental cross is supported by breeder threads and first-person interviews.

Growing Characteristics
Grow Tips: Aggressive vertical stretch of 100–150% during first 3 weeks of flower. SCROG, LST, and topping are essentially mandatory indoors. Heavy feeder. Serious odor management required. Susceptible to bud rot and light-sensitive to photoperiod changes.
History & Origin
Emerged circa 1995 in NYC through accidental pollination. Weasel obtained Chemdawg clones from Chemdog in Central Park around 1992, renamed it 'Diesel,' and crossed it to create Original Diesel. A hermaphroditic DNL plant seeded an Original Diesel crop, producing the Sour Diesel phenotype. It commanded $600–800/oz in the late '90s and was referenced by The Notorious B.I.G. and Jadakiss.
