Sour OG
Also known as: Sour OG Kush, 818 Headband, Sour Kush
Breeder: The Cali Connection
Sour OG is a balanced hybrid that marries Sour Diesel's sharp citrus-fuel top notes with OG Kush's dense, resinous structure and grounded body effect. Available in clone and seed form for over a decade, it gained notoriety as '818 Headband' — named after the San Fernando Valley area code — before the name shifted to Sour OG as it spread beyond California. Often described as a 'one-hit-quit' strain, it delivers an immediate cerebral rush that settles into deep physical relaxation. The cross is prized by breeders for its genetic stability and its ability to reliably pass down greasy resin production and fuel-forward terpene profiles to offspring.
Lineage & Genetics
Cross: Sour Diesel x SFV OG Kush
Sour Diesel (specifically AJ's cut / 'Asshole Joe' / 'Weasel' — the first cut from AJ's Sour Diesel collection and the precursor to East Coast Sour Diesel) contributes the sharp, acrid citrus-fuel aroma and electrifying cerebral stimulation. SFV OG Kush (San Fernando Valley OG Kush, F4 IBL selection by The Cali Connection) provides dense bud structure, heavy resin output, earthy-pine gas flavor, and grounding indica body effects. The F4 inbred line stabilized the OG traits, resulting in more uniform offspring than a typical poly-hybrid cross.
Lineage Dispute
The Cali Connection's version uses their Original Sour Diesel (AJ's cut, the precursor to ECSD) crossed to an SFV OG Kush F4 IBL male. Multiple breeders offer their own Sour OG versions — Mamiko Seeds uses Sour Diesel Riri x (Sour OG x Illusion OG), and Jaws Gear has a separate release. The generic 'Sour OG' name broadly refers to any Sour Diesel x OG Kush cross, but The Cali Connection's 818 Headband is the original named release and cup winner.
Terpene Profile
Limonene — Sharp sour-lemon acidity driving the citrus-fuel profile
Myrcene — Deep earthy backbone beneath the diesel
Caryophyllene — Peppery warmth emerging mid-palate
Pinene — Earthy pine character from the SFV OG parentage
Humulene — Woody, hoppy depth reinforcing the kush undertone
Aroma: Sharp sour lemon and diesel fuel hit first, followed by deep earthy pine, kerosene funk, and a distinct 'kushy' gas undertone. Some phenotypes express a more fruity profile. The nose is loud — good carbon filtration is essential indoors. Lab terpene data typically shows limonene at 0.4–0.8%, caryophyllene at 0.3–0.6%, and pinene collectively around 0.2–0.4%.
Flavor: Sour citrus and acrid diesel on the inhale with peppery warmth mid-palate. The exhale delivers earthy pine, hashish-like spice, and a lingering lemon-fuel aftertaste. Some cuts lean toward a buttery, cheese-adjacent sweetness on the backend. The flavor holds well through combustion and vaporization due to high liquid-phase terpene concentration.
Effects & Experience
Onset: Fast — within 2–5 minutes. Begins with a bright, euphoric head rush and temple pressure (the 'headband' sensation the 818 name references).
A cerebral, energized, chatty high transitions over 30–45 minutes into a deep, full-body relaxation that can reach couchlock at higher doses. At moderate intake the effect is clear-headed and functional; heavier sessions tilt decidedly sedative. Users report happiness, creativity, and social ease in the first phase, followed by physical calm and appetite stimulation.
Duration: 2–3 hours typical. The cerebral phase lasts roughly 45–60 minutes before the indica body stone dominates for the remainder.

Growing Characteristics
Grow Tips: Two main phenotypes emerge: a taller, stretchier Sour Diesel-leaning pheno with earlier aroma expression and a head-forward effect, and a shorter, tighter OG-leaning pheno with denser colas and heavier body stone — select based on your goals. Top early and use trellis netting (SCROG) to manage stretch and support heavy colas in late flower. LST responds well. Heavy feeder — maintain adequate EC through mid-flower, then reduce in the final 10–14 days for a clean finish that preserves the bright terpene profile. Harvest timing is critical: target mostly cloudy trichomes with 10–15% amber for balanced effects. Letting it go too long shifts heavily sedative. Outstanding resin producer — trichome coverage starts early and coats surrounding sugar leaves in wet frost. The greasy, gritty trichome texture makes it a strong candidate for ice water hash and rosin extraction. Watch for hermaphrodite tendencies under stress — Sour Diesel lineage can carry intersex traits. Maintain stable environment and inspect regularly. SOG method works well indoors due to the growth pattern, particularly with the OG-leaning phenotype.
History & Origin
The Cali Connection created Sour OG by crossing their Original Sour Diesel cut (AJ's cut — the first selection from AJ's legendary Sour Diesel collection and the precursor to East Coast Sour Diesel) with their SFV OG Kush F4 IBL male. The strain was originally dubbed '818 Headband' as a nod to the San Fernando Valley's area code and the team's home turf. It gained national recognition after winning 1st Place in the Hybrid category at the 2011 High Times Medical Cannabis Cup in Detroit, Michigan. The name gradually shifted to 'Sour OG' as the strain spread beyond California. Multiple breeders — including Mamiko Seeds and Jaws Gear — have since released their own Sour Diesel x OG Kush crosses under the Sour OG name, but The Cali Connection's 818 Headband remains the original named and awarded version.
