Larry OG

Also known as: Larry OG Kush, Lemon Larry, Lemon Larry OG, Sour Larry, Zour Larry, Grandpa Larry

Breeder: Originally an elite OG Kush phenotype circulating in Orange County, California around 2006-2007. Named and distributed by Wick650. Stabilized into seed form by The Cali Connection (Swerve) using an SFV OG Kush IBL male.

Larry OG's greatest legacy in modern cannabis genetics is as the paternal parent of Purple Punch (Larry OG x Granddaddy Purple), bred by Supernova Gardens in 2012. Purple Punch was named Strain of the Year in 2017 and became one of the most influential breeding parents of the modern era. Through Purple Punch, Larry OG's genetics appear in dozens of top-selling cultivars including Mimosa, Wedding Crasher, and Slurricane. Larry OG contributed structural vigor, dense bud formation, high resin production, a lemony terpene backbone, and cerebral clarity that tempers GDP's heavy sedation.

Lineage & Genetics

Cross: OG Kush phenotype (clone-only), stabilized in seed form as Larry OG x SFV OG Kush IBL

OG Kush — Chemdawg 91 x Hindu Kush (Neville's) x Lemon Thai (debated proportions). Accidental pollination in South Florida 1991 (Matt Bubba Berger), brought to Los Angeles by Josh D in the mid-1990s. Fuel-forward, piney, earthy with bright citrus and potent cerebral + body effects. SFV OG (San Fernando Valley OG) — OG Kush phenotype selected in the San Fernando Valley, more lemon-forward than standard OG Kush, slightly easier to grow with pronounced head-high. Used as the IBL male pollen donor by The Cali Connection for seed production.

Lineage Dispute

Some sources describe Larry OG as a distinct cross (OG Kush x SFV OG) while historical accounts identify it as an elite OG Kush phenotype later outcrossed to SFV OG for seed production. The clone itself predates the seed version. Both framings are correct depending on whether referring to the original clone or The Cali Connection's seed line.

Terpene Profile

DOMINANT

Limonene0.2%-0.8% — Lemon peel, bright citrus, sweet. Dominant in most phenotypes; drives the Lemon Larry character.

DOMINANT

Myrcene0.2%-0.7% — Earthy, musky, herbal. Contributes depth and relaxing body effects.

SECONDARY

Beta-Caryophyllene0.1%-0.4% — Peppery, spicy, woody. Anti-inflammatory properties and warmth.

SECONDARY

Alpha-Pinene0.1%-0.5% — Pine, fresh, sharp. Supports alertness and complements the Pinesol character.

Aroma: Top notes of fresh lemon peel, lemon zest, and lemon-pine cleaning product (Pinesol). Mid notes of sharp pine resin and fresh-cut evergreen. Base notes of petroleum/kerosene fuel, damp earth, and subtle spice. Strong aroma requiring carbon filtration indoors. Dense nugs with distinct burnt-orange pistils longer than average.

Flavor: Inhale is bright lemon citrus and clean pine. Exhale delivers diesel fuel, earthy OG finish with mild peppery warmth. Aftertaste is lingering lemon-pine with petroleum undertones. The lemon character distinguishes Larry OG from other OG family members and earned it the Lemon Larry moniker.

Effects & Experience

Onset: Rapid cerebral rush within 1-5 minutes with euphoria and mood elevation.

Clear-headed focus plus gentle body warmth spreading from chest outward at 15-45 minutes. Balanced state with mental alertness but physical relaxation at 1-2 hours, functional at lower doses. Gradual sedation at 2-4 hours, leading to sleepiness and appetite stimulation at higher doses. Dose-dependent: low doses are functional daytime, higher doses are sedating evening strain.

Duration: 2-4 hours total

Growing Characteristics

Flower Time
56-70 days (8-10 weeks) indoors, most phenos finish week 9; early to mid-October outdoors
Yield (Indoor)
450-550 g/m2 (14-19 oz/m2)
Yield (Outdoor)
500-900 g/plant (16-22+ oz/plant)
Difficulty
Intermediate (moderate)
Height
80-120 cm (3-4 feet) indoors; 140-180 cm (5-6 feet) outdoors. Bushy compact structure with thick stems and dense lateral branching. Moderate OG-style stretch during first 2-3 weeks of flower.
Environment
Temperature 70-80F (21-27C) daytime, drop 10-15F at night. Never exceed 85F which causes terpene volatilization and foxtailing. Late flower slight nighttime drop to 65F enhances terpene expression. Humidity seedling/clone 65-70%, veg 50-60%, early flower 45-50%, mid-late flower 40-45%, final 2 weeks 35-40%. Target VPD 0.8-1.2 kPa during flower. 18/6 veg, 12/12 flower. PPFD 600-900 in soil, 1000-1200 with CO2 in coco/hydro. Under LEDs keep canopy temps 1-2C warmer than HPS equivalent. pH 6.0-6.5 soil, 5.8-6.2 coco/hydro.

Grow Tips: Cal-Mag supplementation is CRITICAL — Larry OG like all OG Kush derivatives is a heavy calcium and magnesium consumer. Supplement at 2-5 mL/L throughout entire grow. Under LEDs demand increases further. Do NOT wait for deficiency symptoms (interveinal chlorosis — yellowing between veins while veins stay green). Feed with standard high-nitrogen veg formula building thick stems, EC 1.2-1.6 early veg increasing to 1.4-1.8 late veg. Transition to bloom at flip with 2-2-3 NPK, EC 1.6-2.0. Mid flower weeks 3-5 push phosphorus and potassium hard with 1-3-4 NPK, EC 1.8-2.2. Late flower taper to 1.6-2.0 EC. Flush final 7-10 days with plain pH water. In coco maintain 10-20% runoff on every fertigation to prevent salt accumulation. Silica strengthens cell walls to support heavy colas. Molasses and kelp in weeks 4-6 enhance resin and aroma. TRAINING: Top at 4th-5th node with 5-7 day recovery. LST starting week 2-3 of veg bending main stems outward. SCROG highly recommended — natural lateral branching makes it ideal, each shoot becomes an individual cola site, aim for 80-90% screen filled by flip day. Defoliate: light in late veg removing fan leaves blocking lower sites, week 3 of flower strip lower 1/3 and lollipop, weeks 5-6 second light defoliation (20-30% of large leaves max). Never strip aggressively. Supercropping can be used on overly vigorous branches during early flower stretch. PEST AND DISEASE: Botrytis (bud rot) is HIGH risk from dense bud structure trapping moisture — humidity control, airflow, defoliation, inspect large colas regularly. Powdery mildew moderate risk — preventive sulfur/potassium bicarbonate sprays in veg. Spider mites and aphids moderate risk — IPM rotations, predatory mites, neem oil/insecticidal soap every 14 days in veg. NEVER spray once flowers have formed. Root rot if media too water-retentive — use well-draining media with beneficial microbes. HARVEST: Trichome method — peak balanced high at 70-80% milky-white with 10-20% amber, peak potency euphoric at 90%+ milky with minimal amber, more sedative/medicinal at 30-50% amber. Calendar method: 56-70 days from flip, most phenos finish days 60-65. Begin flush 7-10 days before expected chop. DRYING: Whole-plant hang in dark room at 60-65F and 55-62% RH for 7-14 days. Snap test ready when small stems snap cleanly. Gentle air circulation not pointed at buds. CURING: Trim to preference (dry trim preserves terpenes better for OG strains), wide-mouth glass jars 75% max, store at 60F, burp daily 10-15 min first week then every 2-3 days, minimum 4 weeks before consumption, optimal 6-8 weeks for full lemon-pine terpene development. Target jar humidity 58-62% with Boveda/Integra packs. Rushing cure produces hay-smelling buds lacking the characteristic lemon-fuel profile. Common mistakes: overwatering (OGs prefer slightly dry between waterings), ignoring Cal-Mag until deficiency shows, high humidity in flower (the #1 killer — dense colas rot from inside out if above 50%), no defoliation, harvesting too early (wait for trichome maturity week 9-10), skipping flush, rushing cure (minimum 4 weeks), overfeeding late in flower (excess N causes dark harsh buds), poor canopy uniformity (without LST/SCROG only top colas develop), and spraying buds for pest control. Pro tips: cold-cure technique moving jars to 38-45F for additional 2-4 weeks after initial cure produces exceptionally smooth smoke. CO2 supplementation at 1200-1500 ppm during weeks 3-6 of flower with higher light intensity. Harvest in the morning at lights-on when terpene concentrations peak. When pheno-hunting from seed, most desirable phenos express heavy lemon peel aroma early in flower by week 3.

History & Origin

OG Kush genetics emerged from accidental pollination in South Florida in 1991 (Chemdawg 91 x Hindu Kush x Lemon Thai). Josh D brought OG Kush to Los Angeles in the mid-1990s. Around 2004-2006 Orange County biker crews controlled elite OG phenotypes. In 2006-2007 Wick650 acquired, named, and distributed the Larry OG clone beyond its original circle — one of the first named OG clones to circulate widely. The Cali Connection (Swerve) founded in 2008 began stabilizing clone-only cuts into seed form. In 2012 Larry OG won 1st Place at the High Times Medical Cup San Francisco, and that same year Supernova Gardens crossed a Larry OG female with a Granddaddy Purple male creating Purple Punch. Purple Punch was named Strain of the Year in 2017. Wick650 passed away in 2021; ICMag community paid tribute to his role in preserving OG genetics.
