Lemon Tree

Also known as: Lemon Tree Kush, Lemon Tree OG

Breeder: Santa Cruz growers (disputed); Rocky Rockwell credited by some sources; Lemon Tree Organics (cultivation and popularization)

Lemon Tree is one of the most significant citrus-forward cultivars in modern cannabis history, bridging old-school California genetics with the terpene-rich flavor-first movement. Its importance lies in extreme limonene expression (routinely testing 0.6-1.2% by dry weight), making it one of the highest natural limonene producers in commercial cannabis. As a breeding platform, its stable genetics and dominant terpene expression made it foundational for Gelonade, Tree Flip, and the Lemon Cherry Gelato lineage. Double Cannabis Cup winner in 2014 at both San Francisco and Seattle.

Lineage & Genetics

Cross: Lemon Skunk x Sour Diesel (East Coast Sour Diesel)

Lemon Skunk (DNA Genetics): Skunk #1 (Lemon phenotype from Las Vegas, kept 20+ years by Lemon Man) x Skunk #1 (male selected in Holland). Sativa-dominant ~60/40, 15-22% THC, intense citrus terpenes, high calyx-to-leaf ratio, multiple awards. Contributes dominant limonene, easy trimming, tall growth. Sour Diesel (East Coast): Chemdawg 91 x DNL (Northern Lights/Shiva x Hawaiian), sativa-dominant ~90/10, 20-26% THC. Contributes diesel/fuel aroma, cerebral energizing effects, vigorous stretch, heavy resin production, legendary potency.

Terpene Profile

DOMINANT

d-Limonene0.6-1.2% by dry weight (dominant); drives the signature sharp lemon/citrus aroma

DOMINANT

Beta-Myrcene0.2-0.8%; earthy, herbal, contributes to body relaxation

SECONDARY

Beta-Caryophyllene0.2-0.5%; peppery/spicy, potential anti-inflammatory

SECONDARY

Ocimene0.05-0.2%; sweet, herbal lift

SECONDARY

Alpha-Pinene0.05-0.2%; piney freshness, potential bronchodilator

Aroma: Immediately and unmistakably citrus — sharp, tangy fresh lemon zest as the first hit, followed by pungent diesel/fuel backbone inherited from Sour Diesel, and funky skunk undertone from Skunk #1 ancestry. Well-grown Lemon Tree lingers in the air long after handling. Commonly described as lemon pledge meets a gas station in the best possible way.

Flavor: Inhale is bright sour lemon with a tangy bite — almost mouth-puckering citrus. Exhale brings diesel fuel, earthy pine, and subtle sweetness. Lingering sour citrus aftertaste with peppery, skunky finish.

Effects & Experience

Onset: 5-15 minutes when inhaled. Rapid cerebral lift with mood elevation, euphoria, heightened mental clarity and creativity. Often described as feeling like a caffeine rush without the jitters.

Sativa energy remains but growing physical relaxation emerges. Body feels loose without couch-lock. Talkativeness and social ease are common. Functional and versatile — users consistently describe remaining clear-headed and productive. Suits creative work, social situations, or light physical activity.

Duration: 2-4 hours depending on tolerance and dosage. Gradual wind-down into calm contentment with no harsh crash.

Growing Characteristics

Flower Time
8-10 weeks indoor (65-70 days); harvest late September to late October outdoor
Yield (Indoor)
450-700 g/m²
Yield (Outdoor)
Up to 1500 g/plant
Difficulty
Easy to Moderate
Height
90-100 cm with training indoor; can stretch to 150-200+ cm outdoor. Can exceed 2m in large containers.
Environment
Controlled indoor or warm Mediterranean outdoor. Veg 70-85°F, flower 70-80°F. Late flower humidity below 50% critical for dense trichome-heavy buds.

Grow Tips: Lemon Tree inherits Sour Diesel's tendency to stretch tall — can double in height during first 2-3 weeks of flower. Without training, indoor plants outgrow space. Training strongly recommended. Top at 5th or 6th node during early veg, creates 4-6 main colas. LST starting week 3-4 of veg when stems are flexible. ScrOG particularly effective — maximizes naturally horizontal-branching structure and ideal for 600+ g/m² targets. Seedlings (Week 1-2) need no additional nutrients. Early veg (Week 3-4) begin feeding at half-strength nitrogen-heavy formula (NPK 3-1-2). Full-strength by late veg. Transition at flip: reduce nitrogen, introduce P and K (NPK 2-2-2). Mid-flower (Week 3-6): Bloom formula NPK 1-3-2 or 1-3-3, peak P/K demand. Late flower (Week 7+): reduce nitrogen to near zero (0-3-3). Flush final 7-14 days. pH sweet spot 6.3-6.5 soil, 5.8-6.0 coco/hydro. EC targets: early veg 400-600 PPM, late veg 800-1000, peak flower 1000-1400, flush <150. Terpene enhancement tip: supplement with sulfur-containing amendments (Epsom salt 1 tsp/gal) during weeks 5-7 of flower — sulfur is a precursor to certain terpene pathways and can intensify lemon/fuel expression. Avoid sulfur in final 2 weeks. Primary threats: powdery mildew (lush foliage creates susceptibility), bud rot (dense colas in humidity), spider mites. Weekly scouting with loupe essential. Deploy yellow sticky traps. Preventative foliar sprays (neem, potassium bicarbonate) in veg only — avoid ALL foliar past week 2-3 of flower. Harvest when mostly milky with 10-15% amber for signature uplifting citrus-forward experience. Waiting too long shifts profile toward musky/earthy and mutes the lemon. Dry at 60-68°F, 55-62% RH for 10-14 days. Curing minimum 2-4 weeks; 6-8 weeks for full terpene development. Lemon character intensifies significantly between weeks 3-6 of cure. Storage critical: limonene and ocimene are volatile and dissipate under UV or elevated temps. Cool, dark, airtight. Common mistakes: underestimating stretch, over-feeding nitrogen in flower, ignoring humidity in late flower, harvesting too early (needs full 9-10 weeks for terpene profile to develop), fast-drying (destroys volatile limonene producing hay smell), not defoliating (creates PM-friendly microclimates). Pro tips: run slightly cooler temperatures (68-72°F) in final 2 weeks to preserve limonene. UVB supplementation during final 3-4 weeks stimulates trichome production. Organic living soil produces superior terpene complexity. True Lemon Tree is clone-only — seed bank versions may not replicate the exact phenotype. HENDRX notes original clone is slow to veg in early stages — don't panic. Barney's Farm recommends progressive pot sizing rather than starting in final container.

History & Origin

Developed in the early 2000s by Matthew Rocky Rockwell and a collective of Santa Cruz Mountains legacy growers by crossing Lemon Skunk x Sour Diesel with meticulous pheno-hunting. Circulated underground in Northern California from 2005-2012 as clone-only. Won 1st Place Best Hybrid at both the San Francisco and Seattle High Times Cannabis Cups in 2014, catapulting to national recognition. Won 1st Place and Best Cannabis at the 2016 Santa Cruz Cup. Breeders began using it as a parent: Connected Cannabis created Gelonade (Lemon Tree x Gelato #41), Rocky created Tree Flip (Lemon Tree x Wedding Cake).
