Lemon Skunk

Also known as: Lemon Skunk OG, LS

Breeder: DNA Genetics (Amsterdam)

A landmark strain in citrus-forward cannabis genetics. Created in the early 2000s by DNA Genetics, it proved that selective phenotype breeding within a single lineage (Skunk #1) could produce a cultivar with an aroma rivaling actual lemon fruit — without sacrificing the structural reliability, vigor, and yield that made Skunk #1 the backbone of modern cannabis breeding. Became especially significant as a breeding parent, passing its intense citrus terpene profile to Super Lemon Haze (2x Cannabis Cup winner) and Lemon Tree (parent of Gelonade, Melonade, Tree Flip, and Lemon Mash).

Lineage & Genetics

Cross: Selected Skunk #1 phenotype (Lemon Man's Las Vegas cut) x Selected Skunk #1 phenotype (Eddie's Holland male)

Parent strains in encyclopedia:AfghaniSkunk #1

The mother is a lemon-forward Skunk #1 phenotype discovered in Las Vegas and maintained as a clone for over 20 years by Lemon Man, who brought it to Amsterdam in the late 1990s. The father is a prize male Skunk #1 selected in Holland by Eddie (founder of The Flying Dutchmen, est. 1984), who worked directly with Sam the Skunkman introducing Skunk #1 to the Netherlands in the early 1980s. Both parents derive from the classic Skunk #1 lineage (Afghani x Colombian Gold x Acapulco Gold, stabilized in the 1970s).

Grow Tips: DNA Genetics specifically states this strain is tastiest and sweetest if cut between 50 and 56 days — this is the critical harvest window. Harvesting at day 50-56 preserves peak limonene content and the signature sweet lemon character. Letting plants go beyond day 60 increases body stone but at the cost of the bright citrus terpene profile. Growth habit is vigorous, uniform, and compact with strong lateral branching from every node — documented grows showed almost all plants having the same height two weeks after germination (extremely uniform from seed). Training is strongly recommended as the strain grows tall with vigorous stretch. Top once or twice during veg. LST and ScrOG are highly effective for maximizing light distribution and controlling height. Expect roughly 50% height increase during flowering (plants grew from 58-66 cm to 90-100 cm in documented grow). High disease resistance to common molds and mildew. Gender reveals within 8 days of flip from regulars. The strain shows instant high willingness to bloom — first bud roses appear along main stems in weeks 1-2. Strong stretch occurs in weeks 5-6 of flower with big tight top colas and swollen calyxes forming. Extreme resin production: thick layers of super sticky silvery white resin glands. Purple coloration may appear spontaneously in buds and flower leaves without cold temperatures. Medium to heavy feeder — watch for increased nutrient demand in weeks 3-4 of veg. Proven grow used HeSi products with Phosphor Plus supplement added from week 4 of flower. Good for beginners — forgiving, disease-resistant, and structurally predictable. Outdoor adaptability: thrives even in cooler climates. Drying is critical for preserving lemon terpene profile: slow-dry over almost three weeks at below 70°F/21°C and 55-62% RH. Limonene is a volatile monoterpene (boiling point 176°C/349°F) that is easily lost with fast drying. Dried buds wonderfully preserved their intense lemon aroma using slow drying. High calyx-to-leaf ratio makes trimming efficient. Feminized seeds are the only format currently available (regulars discontinued). Carbon filter recommended for indoor but smell described as manageable compared to other skunks.

History & Origin

Created in the early 2000s when DNA Genetics crossed Lemon Man's female (maintained 20+ years in Las Vegas) with Eddie's prize male (The Flying Dutchmen). Won 1st Place Outdoor at Highlife Cup 2007 and 1st Place Indoor Hydro at Spannabis Cannabis Champions Cup 2008. Named to High Times Top 10 Strains of the Year in 2009. Its offspring Super Lemon Haze won overall Cannabis Cup in 2008 and 2009. In 2006, Sensi Seeds acquired all of The Flying Dutchmen's genetics. Currently available primarily as feminized seeds from DNA Genetics.
