Clementine
Also known as: Clem, Clementine OG
Breeder: Crockett Family Farms (Dave "Crockett" / Tangie Man), a multi-generational family-run operation based on the Central Coast of California. Acquired by DNA Genetics in 2019.
Clementine is one of the most significant citrus-forward cultivars in modern cannabis, created by crossing two citrus powerhouses — Crockett's award-winning Tangie with a trophy-winning Lemon Skunk pheno. Crockett calls it an overloaded terpene variety with extreme orange-citrus expression. Its significance extends beyond its own merits as the mother of Mimosa (Clementine x Purple Punch by Symbiotic Genetics), one of the most commercially successful cultivars of the late 2010s. Total terpene content typically exceeds 2.4%, driven by exceptionally high limonene. Its 2015 Cannabis Cup win was specifically for its live resin, demonstrating its exceptional extraction potential.
Lineage & Genetics
Cross: Tangie x Lemon Skunk (specifically Darren's cut, the 2014 Emerald Cup 1st Place Lemon Skunk phenotype)
Tangie (Crockett Family Farms) — California Orange (Cali-O) x Skunk hybrid, sativa-dominant ~70/30, developed in the mid-1990s in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Won 20+ trophies by 2013, single-handedly shifted market taste preferences from OG/Kush/Purple to fruit-forward, terp-rich cultivars. Lemon Skunk (DNA Genetics, Darren's cut) — Skunk #1 (Las Vegas Lemon Man's cut, kept 20+ years) x Skunk #1 (Dutch male, selected by Eddie), sativa-leaning 60/40. Won 1st Place Outdoor Highlife Cup 2007 and 1st Place Indoor Hydro Spannabis 2008. The specific Darren's cut won 1st Place at the 2014 Emerald Cup out of 257 entries.
Terpene Profile
Limonene — ~0.85% — Citrus, lemon, orange. DOMINANT. Drives the signature bright-citrus aroma. Among the highest limonene concentrations of any commercial cultivar. Associated with mood elevation and anxiety reduction.
Beta-Caryophyllene — ~0.42% — Spicy, peppery, herbal. Adds warmth and subtle spice to the exhale. CB2 receptor agonist.
Myrcene — ~0.31% — Earthy, musky, herbal. Provides grounding sedative counterbalance to stimulating terpenes.
Terpinolene — ~0.27% — Woody, floral, piney, herbal. Some phenotypes express terpinolene as the dominant terpene. Adds uplifting herbal complexity.
Alpha-Pinene — ~0.15%-0.2% — Fresh pine, forest. Contributes to the crisp quality and may support alertness.
Aroma: Immediate room-filling wave of candied orange peel, fresh tangerine, and lemon zest. No ambiguity — this strain smells like its namesake fruit. Secondary notes of sweet pine, light skunk funk, and earthy herbs. Even on living plants during late flower, the citrus aroma permeates an entire grow room.
Flavor: Inhale is sweet orange and tart tangerine with a fizzy, almost sparkling citrus quality, compared to fresh-squeezed orange juice. Exhale mellows to earthy, slightly herbal undertones with subtle peppery spice (caryophyllene) and a soft skunk finish. Aftertaste is tangy, refreshing, and lingers pleasantly. Exceptional for live resin and rosin where the citrus character is amplified.
Effects & Experience
Onset: Rapid — effects begin within 2-5 minutes of inhalation. Users report a noticeable bubbly mood shift and mental clearing almost immediately.
Strong euphoria and mood elevation described as sunshine through a clean window. Pronounced cerebral stimulation without racing thoughts — ideal wake-and-bake or morning strain. Clear-headed organized thinking popular among artists, writers, and productivity-oriented consumers. Enhanced talkativeness and social engagement. The 30% indica genetics provide mild physical ease preventing the high from feeling wired but never reaching couch-lock. Duration 2-3 hours with gentle taper and no harsh crash.
Duration: 2-3 hours of primary effects followed by gentle taper without harsh crash

Growing Characteristics
Grow Tips: HEIGHT MANAGEMENT is the single most important training consideration. Sativa-dominant genetics produce significant vertical stretch of 1.5-2.0x after flipping. Top at 5th node during veg to force lateral branching with 7-10 days recovery before flipping. LST starting week 3-4 of veg bending branches outward — Clementine responds exceptionally well with pliable branches. SCROG is the OPTIMAL method for indoor — set net at height accounting for stretch, weave branches through during early flower, skilled SCROG growers regularly exceed 600 g/m2. Light defoliation at day 21 of flower removing large fan leaves blocking bud sites and airflow. Second defoliation around day 42 lollipopping lower canopy and removing shaded undergrowth. Do not over-defoliate — open internodal structure already allows decent light penetration, focus on airflow improvement. Stake or trellis tallest colas in mid-to-late flower as large colas become heavy enough to snap branches. FEEDING: Moderate feeder SENSITIVE to overfeeding — start at 50% manufacturer strength and increase only if deficiency signs appear. pH 6.2-6.8 soil (sweet spot 6.3-6.5), 5.5-6.2 coco (sweet spot 5.8-6.0). EC 1.3-1.6 veg, 1.6-2.0 flower with brief peak at 2.2 during mid-flower PK boost. Final flush target runoff EC under 0.5. Prioritize nitrogen for robust development in veg (3-1-2 ratio). Supplement Cal-Mag especially under LEDs. Transition weeks 1-2 of flower to balanced NPK. Mid-flower weeks 3-6 reduce nitrogen and increase P/K, PK booster for 1-2 weeks max during weeks 4-5. Sulfur-containing amendments like Epsom salts in moderation support terpene biosynthesis. Late flower return to base bloom only, begin flush 1-2 weeks before harvest (soil) or 3-5 days (coco). NUTRIENT BURN is the #1 grower error — leaves show burnt tips quickly if overfed, cut concentration by 25% immediately. NITROGEN TOXICITY IN FLOWER (dark clawing leaves) directly counterproductive for a strain grown specifically for its terpene profile. Inoculate seeds/transplants with Trichoderma and mycorrhizal fungi at sowing. MOLD/BOTRYTIS: Large dense pillar-like colas are HIGHLY susceptible in humid conditions especially final 2-3 weeks. Maintain aggressive airflow with oscillating fans. Drop humidity below 40% RH in late flower. Outdoor in rainy climates: provide cover (polytunnel, greenhouse, rain tarp). Inspect interior of dense colas regularly — mold starts inside invisibly. Powdery mildew risk if airflow poor or humidity spikes overnight. Caterpillars outdoors: Bt sprays effective, inspect colas regularly as frass creates fast track to mold. HARVEST: For peak terpene expression and energetic effects harvest when most trichomes are cloudy/milky with only 5-10% amber preserving sativa-forward cerebral character. For more balanced effects allow 20-30% amber. Do not harvest early — limonene continues developing through final days. DRYING: Whole-plant or branch-hung in dark room at 60-65F and 55-62% RH for 10-14 days. Fast drying at high heat/low humidity destroys volatile citrus terpenes that make Clementine special — will be drastically diminished if dried in under 7 days. Never point fans directly at drying buds. CURING: Trim and jar when small stems snap, airtight glass jars at 58-62% RH with Boveda/Integra 62% packs. Burp 1-2 times daily first week then once daily weeks 2-3 then 2-3 times weekly. Minimum 2-4 weeks for full citrus aroma. Properly cured Clementine should release intense unmistakable burst of candied orange and tangerine when jar is opened. Common mistakes: not managing stretch (touching lights), overfeeding (moderate feeder signals burn quickly), excess nitrogen in flower (suppresses terpene production), neglecting humidity in late flower (large colas + above 50% = guaranteed mold), harvesting early (citrus terpenes develop in final days), fast drying (volatile citrus terpenes evaporate first), and insufficient curing (at least 2 weeks ideally 4+ for full peeled clementine nose).
History & Origin
The Crockett family began cultivating cannabis near Yosemite in the 1980s with California Orange as their signature heirloom. In the mid-1990s Crockett created Tangie (Cali-O x Skunk hybrid) which reshaped the cannabis flavor landscape. By 2006-2008 DNA Genetics partnership brought Tangie to global distribution. By 2011-2013 Tangie earned 20+ trophies and the Tangie Man nickname. In 2014 a Lemon Skunk pheno (Darren's cut) won 1st at the Emerald Cup out of 257 entries. Around 2015 Crockett crossed the EC-winning Lemon Skunk with Tangie to create Clementine. In 2015 Clementine Live Resin won 1st Place Best Sativa Concentrate at the High Times Cannabis Cup Michigan and placed 2nd Best Sativa. Symbiotic Genetics later crossed Clementine x Purple Punch to create Mimosa. In 2018 it won 1st Place Best Non-Solvent Hash at High Times SoCal Awards. DNA Genetics formally acquired Crockett Family Farms in 2019.
