Tangie

Also known as: The Tangie, Crockett's Tangie, Tangie Crockett's Cut

Breeder: David "Tangie Man" Crockett (Crockett Family Farms, Sierra Nevada foothills, California), distributed globally through DNA Genetics / Reserva Privada (Amsterdam)

Tangie is a citrus terpene powerhouse that shifted the California cannabis market away from Kush/OG dominance toward fruit-forward cultivars in the early 2010s. It became one of the most decorated competition strains in cannabis history, winning over 20 awards in approximately two years. DNA Genetics co-founder Don Morris described the cultural impact: "The whole flavor vibration changed in the cannabis world, from this kush-dominant gas to this fruity, tangerine, orange-y, old-school flavor." Beyond its own merits, Tangie is the foundational parent of an entire citrus dynasty — descendants include Tropicana Cookies, Clementine, Mimosa, and Forbidden Fruit. In 2017, Crockett Family Farms was inducted into the High Times Seed Bank Hall of Fame. In 2019, DNA Genetics formally acquired Crockett Family Farms.

Lineage & Genetics

Cross: California Orange (Cali-O) x Skunk hybrid (with undisclosed "family secret" element)

Parent strains in encyclopedia:AfghaniSkunk #1

California Orange (Cali-O): balanced hybrid (~50/50), heirloom cultivar from 1970s-80s California, unknown deeper lineage. Crockett family heirloom grown since the 1980s. Contributes intense tangerine/orange aroma and citrus terpene dominance. Skunk #1 / Skunk hybrid (paternal): originally Afghani x Acapulco Gold x Colombian Gold. Adds vigor, structural stability, improved yield, disease resistance, faster maturation, and consistent phenotypic expression. Crockett has stated the paternal side includes a "family secret" element beyond straight Skunk #1, which may account for Tangie's unusually potent citrus expression.

Lineage Dispute

Often described as a reworking of the 1990s Tangerine Dream, but it does NOT share Tangerine Dream's actual genetics (A5 x G-13). DNA Genetics' catalog note — "aka Tangerine Dream from 1995" — refers to a flavor tribute, not genetic lineage.

Terpene Profile

DOMINANT

Limonene~0.85% — Citrus, orange peel, lemon; one of the highest limonene concentrations in any commercial strain

DOMINANT

Myrcene~0.50% — Earthy, musky, fruity undertone

SECONDARY

Beta-Caryophyllene~0.30% — Spicy, peppery warmth

SECONDARY

Terpinolene~0.20% — Fresh, piney, slightly floral brightness

SECONDARY

Alpha-Pinene~0.15% — Forest, pine needle, sharp freshness

Aroma: Intensely citrus — fresh tangerine peel, sweet mandarin orange, and sharp orange zest dominate immediately upon opening the container. A subtle earthy-skunky undertone from Skunk parentage grounds the bright top notes. Late-flowering plants produce noticeably stronger terp expression with aroma intensifying dramatically around weeks 5-6 of bloom. Total terpene content approximately 4.18% — well above the 2-4% average.

Flavor: Smooth, sweet tangerine on the inhale; orange creamsicle and tropical citrus on the exhale. Many users note an almost juice-like quality. Spicy pepper notes from caryophyllene emerge on the backend. Concentrate/hash versions described as some of the best tasting concentrates on earth. The original breeder specifically recommends soil for the best tasting results.

Effects & Experience

Onset: Quick (5-10 minutes), beginning as cerebral uplift with euphoric mood elevation and optimism.

Creative mental stimulation and enhanced focus. Energizing without jitteriness. Increased sociability and conversational ease. Mild body relaxation without sedation. Too stimulating for evening use in most people.

Duration: Moderate; best suited for daytime use, creative work, social activities, wake-and-bake, outdoor activities.

Grow Tips: TRAINING IS CRITICAL — this strain demands it. If you don't train Tangie indoors, it WILL outgrow your tent. Vertical space is the #1 issue for unprepared growers. TOPPING: Top early (4th-6th node) to break apical dominance and control height. Tangie responds extremely well to topping and FIM. LST: Bend and tie branches to create even canopy exposure. SCROG (Screen of Green): The absolute best method. Install trellis netting 8-12 inches above canopy; weave branches horizontally until screen is 70-80% full before flipping to 12/12. By tucking growing branches under the screen during veg and first couple weeks of flowering, you create a wide, flat, even canopy that turns vertical energy into a horizontal sea of top-shelf buds. SOG also responds well. VEG NUTRITION: Higher nitrogen concentration; 3-1-2 NPK ratio promotes vigorous foliage. Tangie is a moderate-to-heavy feeder — don't underfeed. pH 6.0-7.0 in soil, 5.5-6.5 in hydro. FLOWERING WEEK-BY-WEEK: Weeks 1-2 (Transition/Stretch) — expect aggressive vertical stretch, potentially 2-3x vegetative height. Continue tucking into SCROG net. Early canopy control is critical as stretch doesn't stop until approximately week 5. Switch to bloom formula (high P and K). Weeks 3-4 (Flower Site Formation) — flower sites form along taller branches. Perform targeted defoliation: remove excess interior growth (lower 20-30%) to improve airflow and light penetration. Weeks 5-6 (Aroma Explosion) — aroma intensifies dramatically into sharp tangerine peel and sweet citrus. Resin production increases. Odor control essential — this strain is LOUD. Drop humidity to 30-40%. Weeks 7-8 (Bulking) — colas lengthen and gain substantial mass. Branch support (stakes, trellising, yo-yos) becomes necessary. Reduce/eliminate nitrogen to prevent muted terpenes. Weeks 9-10 (Ripening) — monitor trichomes closely: for classic energetic experience, harvest when mostly milky/cloudy with minimal amber. Some phenos can push to 11 weeks (75-80 days). BLOOM NUTRITION: High phosphorus and potassium (1-3-2 or similar). Sulfur-rich nutrients during bloom specifically enhance citrus terpene production in Tangie. Avoid excess nitrogen in mid-to-late bloom — causes leaf curl, muted terpene expression, and hay smell. Feed in soil every other watering, allowing partial drying between sessions. Final 7-14 day flush with plain pH'd water for cleanest terpene expression. POST-HARVEST TERPENE PRESERVATION (CRITICAL): This is where many growers lose Tangie's signature aroma. Volatile monoterpenes (especially limonene) degrade easily into flat hay notes if dried too quickly. Slow dry at ~60°F (15°C) and 60% RH in dark, ventilated space for 10-14 days. Cure minimum 2-4 weeks in sealed glass jars, burping daily first week. Keep jars below 70°F. The goal is preserving those volatile monoterpenes — rush it and you lose the orange. SOIL IS RECOMMENDED by the original breeder for best tasting results — organic living soil maximizes terpene complexity. COMMON CHALLENGES: Height management (top early + SCROG + flip early), branch breakage (heavy top-heavy colas need support from week 5), bud rot/mold (dense colas + humidity — maintain <40% RH late flower, aggressive airflow, strategic defoliation), nutrient burn (heavy feeder that shows burn easily — start at 75% strength), hay smell after dry (terpene degradation from fast drying), foxtailing (light/heat stress on tall colas — manage canopy height and light distance). INDOOR VS OUTDOOR: Indoor minimum 7-foot ceiling recommended, 8+ feet preferred. Carbon filter required for odor. Light burn risk due to height. Outdoor thrives in warm Mediterranean climates, can reach 8+ feet, 500-700g/plant with full sun. Avoid regions with heavy fall rains — mold risk in dense colas. Greenhouse viable in cooler climates.
