Cross: OG Kush x Sour Diesel

OG Kush: indica-leaning hybrid, Chemdawg 91 x Lemon Thai x Hindu Kush (debated). Florida bag seed brought to LA circa 1996. Dense resin production, earthy-pine-fuel aroma, deeply relaxing body effect with cerebral warmth. Contributes resin production, bud density, kush depth, physical relaxation, and OG structural growth pattern. Sour Diesel: sativa-dominant hybrid (~90/10), accidental cross of (Chemdawg 91 x Mass Super Skunk/NL) x DNL (NL/Shiva x Hawaiian). Mid-1990s NYC, credited to A.J. Pungent diesel/fuel aroma, energetic cerebral stimulation, fast-acting sativa rush. Contributes diesel aroma, cerebral lift, sativa energy, stretch during flowering, and terpene intensity.

Terpene Profile

Aroma: Lemon peel, pungent diesel fuel, damp earth, cream, and subtle pine. Bright citrus top note sitting on a heavy fuel base. Strong enough that carbon filtration is mandatory for indoor grows.

Flavor: Citrus-forward fuel with creamy OG depth and a mild herbal-earth finish. Lingering skunky-diesel echo with zesty citrus on the exhale.

Effects & Experience

Onset: Light cerebral lift with sharpened attention and elevated mood within 0-15 minutes. The signature headband pressure — a gentle tightening sensation around the forehead and temples — appears, likely from THC-mediated vasodilation.

Euphoric, clear-headed mental stimulation with creative focus and social enhancement at peak (15-60 minutes). Growing Characteristics

Grow Tips: Reserva Privada states finding a keeper mother is easy in a pack of 6. Growth pattern: grows fast in veg, spreads wide to produce many tops and an even canopy naturally. Does not grow as tall as Sour Diesel or stretch as aggressively as OG Kush. Not so picky with the nutrients per Reserva Privada — more forgiving than many OG-family strains. Veg: 18/6 light cycle, NPK 3-1-2 nitrogen-heavy feeding, pH 6.0-6.3 soil or 5.8-6.2 coco/hydro, 50-70% humidity, 400-600 PPFD. Training is critical for maximizing yield: top at node 4 — bushes out aggressively after topping and fills space quickly, can increase yield up to 20% versus untrained. FIM is an alternative that redirects growth hormones to lateral branches. LST creates an even canopy and more bud sites — a single round after transition stretch is typically sufficient. SCROG is the ideal technique as Headband fares particularly well with many natural tops. Defoliate moderately 10-20% at a time before flower transition and again around week 3 of bloom. Silica supplementation (potassium silicate) throughout grow strengthens cell walls and helps branches support heavy bud weight. Flowering: 12/12 flip with moderate ~35-40% stretch that is easy to manage with LST or SCROG. Switch to bloom nutrients NPK 1-3-2 with PK booster for 1-2 weeks during mid-flower (weeks 5-6). Increase PPFD to 800-1000 with full-spectrum LEDs preferred for terpene production. Drop humidity to 40-45% during flowering and further to 30-40% in final weeks — critical because extremely dense buds are mold magnets. Good airflow is non-negotiable. Heavy resin production begins early with trichome development accelerating in weeks 5-6 and limonene aroma unmistakable by week 7. Branch support with trellis netting or bamboo stakes for heaviest tops. Harvest: mostly cloudy trichomes with ~10-15% amber for balanced Headband experience. Drying: hang whole branches at 60-70F/45-55% humidity for 7-10 days until stems snap. Flush with plain pH water final 1-2 weeks soil or 3-5 days coco/hydro targeting runoff EC under 0.5. Cure: minimum 2-4 weeks in airtight glass jars. Complex terpene profile benefits significantly from proper cure — creamy OG undertones and lemon brightness develop considerably. Common mistakes: skipping humidity control in flower (dense buds plus high RH equals bud rot), ignoring branch support (heavy colas snap), insufficient odor management (diesel-lemon nose is powerful), over-defoliating (moderate helps, stripping stresses), not training at all (strain produces many tops naturally but rewards training disproportionately), running too hot (sensitive to large temperature swings). First-time grower expectation: 70-85% of reported yields. Excellent candidate for concentrate production due to early and heavy resin output.

History & Origin

Underground versions of OG Kush x Sour Diesel crosses began circulating in California in the mid-1990s with legacy growers selecting and sharing clones without formal documentation. The Headband name gained traction in the late 1990s to early 2000s, inspired by the distinctive forehead pressure sensation. Breeder Mandelbrot (Ras Truth) revealed that what some growers thought were Sour Diesel cuts were actually Headband, also known as LA Kush. In the early 2000s DNA Genetics / Reserva Privada stabilized the cross into a reproducible seed line as Sour Kush aka Headband. In the late 2000s the 707 Headband clone-only cut gained legendary status in Humboldt County. In 2011 the 818 Headband (Sour OG) by The Cali Connection won 1st Place at the High Times Medical Cannabis Cup in Detroit.
