White Rhino
Also known as: Medicine Man
Breeder: Green House Seeds
White Rhino is a heavy indica-dominant hybrid from the 'White Family' developed by Green House Seeds in the mid-1990s. Named for the rhinoceros horn-shaped main cola it throws under good light, White Rhino was bred to amplify White Widow's legendary resin production while deepening the body stone with Afghan indica genetics. The result is a stocky, frost-covered plant that delivers narcotic, full-body sedation and exceptional yields — a workhorse for both commercial growers and extraction artists. Originally released as White Rhino, the strain was renamed 'Medicine Man' by co-breeder Shantibaba when he departed Green House Seeds to found Mr. Nice Seedbank with Neville Schoenmaker, preserving the original genetics under the new name. Almost three decades later, White Rhino remains one of the heaviest-yielding indicas on the market and a staple in coffeeshop menus and medical dispensaries worldwide.
Lineage & Genetics
Cross: White Widow x Afghan
White Widow (Brazilian Sativa x South Indian Indica) — one of the most iconic hybrids ever created, known for extreme trichome coverage, balanced euphoria, and the crystalline 'white' appearance that named the family. Released in the Netherlands in the early 1990s. Afghan Indica — a traditional landrace selected for dense structure, heavy resin output, narcotic body effects, and short flowering time. Contributed the sedative depth and compact morphology that distinguish White Rhino from its White Widow parent.
Lineage Dispute
Green House Seeds and SeedFinder.eu list the cross as White Widow x Afghan. Several secondary sources (Leafly, CannaConnection, Hey Abby) describe the second parent as 'North American Indica' rather than a pure Afghan landrace. Shantibaba, the original breeder who later moved to Mr. Nice Seedbank, sells the same genetics as 'Medicine Man' and describes the full decomposition as 'Afghan x Brazilian Sativa / South Indian' — which simply expands the White Widow parentage. The core dispute is whether the indica parent is a pure Afghan landrace or a distinct North American Indica line with possible Afghan/Mexican ancestry.
Terpene Profile
Myrcene — Heavy earthy and musky base driving the narcotic body stone
Caryophyllene — Spicy, peppery sharpness on the break
Pinene — Woody pine undertones from the coniferous forest floor character
Terpinolene — Herbal, slightly floral nuance adding aromatic complexity
Aroma: Opens with a heavy earthy and musky base — classic old-school indica. Strong hashish and damp soil notes dominate, backed by woody and piney undertones reminiscent of a coniferous forest floor. Breaking apart the buds releases sharp spicy and peppery notes with a skunky pungency that fills a room. Some phenotypes carry a subtle sweetness underneath, but this is not a fruity or dessert strain — the nose is robust, kushy, and unmistakably potent.
Flavor: Earthy and woody on the inhale with a noticeable sweetness that catches you off guard given the pungent aroma. Mid-palate shifts to spicy, peppery notes with hash-like richness. The exhale finishes with diesel and creamy, almost oak-like undertones. After a proper cure (4–8 weeks minimum), the harshness mellows considerably and the spicy-woody complexity opens up. Grower reports consistently note the hashy, robust character — think Amsterdam coffeeshop classics, not modern candy strains.
Effects & Experience
Onset: Fast-acting. Effects register in the face and behind the eyes within minutes of the first hit, then spread downward into the body over 10–15 minutes.
Begins with a warm euphoric mental uplift inherited from the White Widow side — a brief window of cerebral clarity before the Afghan indica genetics take over. The body high builds steadily into deep, heavy relaxation that pins most users to the couch. At higher doses the effect becomes nearly narcotic, with limbs feeling leaden and eyelids heavy. Less 'aggressive' than White Widow — more meditative and physically enveloping. Appetite stimulation is common. Can induce anxiety or paranoia in novice users or those sensitive to high-THC strains.
Duration: Long-lasting. The primary sedative plateau holds for 2–3 hours, tapering into deep drowsiness. Most users report falling asleep within the comedown window. Not a daytime strain for the majority of consumers.

Growing Characteristics
Grow Tips: Built for SOG and SCROG — the short, bushy architecture with heavy lateral branching is tailor-made for these techniques. Maximize canopy coverage for best g/m² numbers. Defoliate strategically before and during early flower. The plant is leafy and dense; removing interior fan leaves improves light penetration and airflow where it matters most. Monitor humidity closely during weeks 6–9 of flower. Dense, resinous buds in a stagnant canopy are a recipe for botrytis. Keep RH below 50% in late flower and ensure good exhaust. Heavy feeder during veg — nitrogen-focused nutrients help the plant develop its full bushy frame. Transition to P/K-heavy bloom nutrients at flip. Hydroponic setups produce tighter node spacing and bushier morphology than soil, further enhancing indoor SOG performance. Support branches in late flower. Buds get dense and heavy enough to snap lateral branches — use stakes, trellising, or yo-yos. Check trichomes under magnification starting week 8. For peak sedation and body effect, harvest when trichomes are mostly cloudy with 10–20% amber. More amber pushes toward sleep; mostly clear is too early. Slow-dry at 60°F / 55–60% RH for 10–14 days, then jar-cure for 4–8 weeks minimum. The long cure is critical — it softens harshness and unlocks the spicy-woody-hashy complexity. Excellent candidate for hash and concentrate production. Extreme trichome density makes it ideal for bubble hash, dry sift, and rosin pressing.
History & Origin
White Rhino was developed in the mid-1990s by Green House Seeds in Amsterdam as part of a breeding project to create a more indica-dominant, medicinal offshoot of the White Widow. The cross combined White Widow (Brazilian Sativa x South Indian Indica) with a selected Afghan indica variety, pushing the ratio to 80/20 indica and deepening the sedative, body-focused effects. The strain debuted at the 1996 High Times Cannabis Cup, where it took 2nd place in the Bio category — immediately establishing itself as a serious contender. The name 'White Rhino' references the rhinoceros horn-like shape of the strain's main cola, not just its potency, though both are fitting. The strain's history is inseparable from the Green House Seeds / Mr. Nice Seedbank split. Shantibaba (Scott Blakey), who co-developed White Rhino alongside Neville Schoenmaker, departed Green House Seeds and took the original parent stock to Mr. Nice Seedbank, where the strain was renamed 'Medicine Man' — a nod to Dennis Peron and Proposition 215 (California's medical cannabis law). Green House Seeds continued selling the strain under the White Rhino name using their retained stock. Both versions trace to the same original breeding project, though they have diverged over decades of separate selection. White Rhino went on to earn additional awards at the 2005 Champions Cup and the 2007 Spannabis Cannabis Champions Cup, and has been used as a parent in over 30 documented crosses in the SeedFinder database.
