Afghani

Also known as: Afghan, Afghani #1, Afghan Kush, Afghanica

Breeder: Pure landrace — no single breeder. First commercial release by Sacred Seeds (California, 1980). Stabilized and popularized by Sensi Seeds (Netherlands, 1980s). Ben Dronkers of Sensi Seeds personally traveled to Afghanistan to collect seeds.

Afghani is one of the most important strains in cannabis history — a pure indica landrace cultivated in Afghanistan's Hindu Kush mountains for centuries, primarily for hashish production. It is the genetic backbone of modern indica breeding, serving as a direct parent or ancestor of Northern Lights, Blueberry, Hash Plant, Skunk #1, LA Confidential, Black Domina, and hundreds more. High Times ranked Afghani #1 as the #6 Greatest Strain of All Time, calling it "one of only a handful of cornerstone genotypes that can be credited with aiding in the creation of nearly every major breeding achievement of the past 30 years." In 1980, Sacred Seeds released Afghani No. 1 as one of its inaugural four varieties alongside Skunk No. 1, Hindu Kush, and Original Haze — four strains that "effectively made the modern industry possible." Its defining characteristic is extraordinary resin production, an evolutionary adaptation to harsh mountain conditions amplified by centuries of human selection for charas quality.

Lineage & Genetics

Cross: Pure Afghani landrace from the Hindu Kush mountains, Afghanistan

Parent strains in encyclopedia:Tropicana CookiesHindu Kush

Afghani is not a cross — it is a stabilized selection from ancient landrace populations native to the Hindu Kush range (2,000-4,000m elevation). Region characterized by hot dry summers, cold harsh winters, intense UV, and short growing seasons. Centuries of farmer selection produced short, bushy plants with thick stems (often 7x the diameter of tropical sativa stems), broad dark-green fan leaves, and dense flower clusters coated in glandular trichomes. Seeds are notably large — up to 7x larger than tropical sativa seeds. Despite being pure indica, Afghan landraces express phenotypic diversity including CBD-dominant, THC-dominant, and relatively high THCV specimens. This full-spectrum cannabinoid expression is unusual compared to modern single-cannabinoid hybrids.

Terpene Profile

DOMINANT

Myrcene0.25-0.70% — Earthy, musky, clove-like; drives sedation

DOMINANT

Beta-Caryophyllene0.15-0.45% — Pepper, spice, dry herbal complexity

SECONDARY

Alpha-Pinene0.05-0.35% — Faint pine edge; brightens the otherwise dark profile

SECONDARY

HumuleneTrace-0.15% — Woody, hoppy undertone

SECONDARY

LinaloolTrace — Subtle floral/lavender

Aroma: Deeply earthy, pungent hash-like funk with sweet resinous undertones. Spicy/woody notes from caryophyllene. Some phenotypes express burnt rubber or incense. The overall nose is dark, heavy, and unmistakably old-school. When sun-dried outdoors (traditional method), beta-myrcene photodegrades into hashishene — a monoterpene unique to traditionally-processed hashish that contributes to the distinctive hash smell not found in fresh flower.

Flavor: Earthy and herbal on the inhale with distinct pine and spice. Sweet hash-like finish on the exhale. Aftertaste is lingering spice with a dry herbal quality and subtle smoky hash echo. Thick, expansive, and smooth smoke characteristic of high-resin genetics.

Effects & Experience

Onset: Warm euphoric mood boost, then settling into heavy, couch-lock body stone that builds progressively.

Deep physical relaxation, grounded body heaviness, calm mood, sedating finish at stronger doses. Best suited for evening/nighttime use. Even when THC tests mid-range by modern standards, the effect feels pronounced because the terpene and cannabinoid profile emphasizes depth and physical intensity — the full-spectrum cannabinoid expression creates an entourage effect that punches above the raw THC number.

Duration: Long-lasting; several hours.

Growing Characteristics

Flower Time
45-55 days (7-8 weeks) — one of the fastest flowering photoperiod strains available. Outdoor harvest late September to early October.
Yield (Indoor)
400-500 g/m²
Yield (Outdoor)
400-600 g/plant (up to 800g in ideal conditions)
Difficulty
Easy — one of the best beginner strains available
Height
60-100 cm (short) indoor; up to 200 cm outdoor. Short, compact, bushy textbook indica Christmas-tree shape with extremely thick and sturdy main stem, thick lateral branches, broad dark-green fan leaves, and tight internodal spacing.
Environment
Any controlled indoor environment works. Outdoor excels in Mediterranean climates but very hardy — handles Northern European climates during good summers. Disease resistant with natural resistance to common molds, mildew, bacteria, and fungi. Mountain-evolved toughness against common garden pests.

Grow Tips: Afghani evolved in one of the harshest mountain climates on Earth, carrying natural resistance to mold, pests, and temperature stress that modern hybrids cannot match. Extremely forgiving of beginner feeding and watering mistakes. Plants are remarkably uniform even from seed — as if the crop was born from cuttings. VEGETATIVE PHASE: Veg for 8-10 weeks before flipping for full-sized plants. For height-restricted spaces, shorter veg (4-6 weeks) keeps final height under 100cm. 18/6 or 24/0 light schedule. Responds extremely well to SOG — compact, uniform growth is purpose-built for this technique. Low nutrient requirements compared to modern hybrids — start at 50-75% of recommended feed strength. FLOWERING: Finishes in 45-55 days (one of the fastest). Plants roughly double vegetated height during bloom. Best results with single main stem and unpruned branches — do NOT top unless willing to add several extra weeks of veg to compensate. If topping: give extra weeks of veg before flipping. Closely-spaced bud knots form along every branch — excellent flower-to-leaf ratio means easier trimming. Moderate humidity (45-55%) in flower with good airflow. Handles cool nights well — bred for mountain environments with significant day/night temperature differentials. GROWING METHODS: Thrives in soil, coco, hydro, and aeroponics alike. Organic soil tends to produce the most complex terpene expression. Hydro maximizes speed and yield. OUTDOOR: Plant in nutrient-dense soil with at least 5 hours direct sunlight daily. Harvest late September to early October. Plants grow as thick bushes up to 2m. 2-3 well-cultivated bushes deliver 400-600g each. IMPORTANT IF TOPPING: If you top, add 2-3 extra weeks of veg or yields will suffer. HUMIDITY: Even though Afghani is mold-resistant, its extremely dense buds can trap moisture. Keep RH below 50% in final 2 weeks. RESIN PRODUCTION AND HASH-MAKING (THE AFGHANI SPECIALTY): This is THE hash-making strain — the genetic source of the world's finest traditional hashish for centuries. Abundant capitate-stalked trichome heads that are large and easy to collect. Trichomes dominate bract surfaces several nodes down — not just top colas. Even sugar leaves are heavily frosted. Gland head size notably large. DRY-SIFT METHOD (traditional Afghan technique): Dry plants slowly in cool, dark place to preserve resin. Gently shake or rub dried flowers over fine mesh screens (72-120 micron for highest quality). Collect trichome heads (kief), progressively smaller screens yield purer grades, press with gentle heat and pressure into blocks or balls. BUBBLE HASH: Ice water and filter bags at 0-4°C water temperature with gentle agitation. Expected yields 3-6% of input flower weight for quality indoor-grown Afghani; standout phenotypes exceed 6%. Dry-sift yields can reach 10-15% of trim and smalls weight. DO NOT discard sugar leaves and trim — the whole plant is useful for extraction. Slow cold-cure of pressed hash over several weeks matures flavors into the hallmark incense-and-spice spectrum. HARVEST TIMING: Target mostly milky/cloudy trichomes with 10-20% amber for relaxing traditional Afghan hash effect. Don't rely solely on pistil color — check trichomes. COMMON MISTAKES: Overfeeding (requires fewer nutrients than modern hybrids, start low), topping without extra veg time, high humidity in late flower, harvesting too early (fast flowering can tempt premature harvest), throwing away trim (every surface produces usable resin).

History & Origin

Ancient origins (1000+ years): Cannabis cultivated in Afghanistan's Hindu Kush mountains for centuries, primarily for hashish production. Sufi scholars wrote about hashish as an intoxicant around 1000 CE. 1960s-1970s: Western travelers on the Hippie Trail collect seeds from Afghan cannabis plants. Brotherhood of Eternal Love specifically sought the short, resinous broadleaf varieties. 1979-1980: Sacred Seeds established in California releases Afghani No. 1 as one of its inaugural four varieties alongside Skunk No. 1, Hindu Kush, and Original Haze. 1980s: Ben Dronkers (Sensi Seeds) personally traveled to Afghanistan; Dutch seed banks stabilize Afghan genetics into reproducible commercial seed lines. The Flying Dutchmen maintained the original Sacred Seeds lines. Modern era: Remains in active commercial production. Sensi Seeds continues to offer Afghani #1 in regular, feminized, and autoflowering formats. Afghanistan remains the second-largest hashish-producing country in the world (after Morocco).
