Skunk #1
Also known as: Skunk, Skunk No. 1, #1
Breeder: Sam the Skunkman (David Watson) / Sacred Seeds Collective
Skunk #1 is widely regarded as the most influential cannabis hybrid ever created — the strain that proved stabilized, true-breeding hybrids were possible and launched the modern seed industry. Watson applied systematic selective inbreeding to produce a hybrid that reliably expressed uniform traits across generations. Together with Original Haze and Northern Lights, Skunk #1 forms the "Big Three" of foundational cannabis hybrids. PhenoDB lists 783 registered crosses using Skunk #1 as a direct parent.
Lineage & Genetics
Cross: (Afghan x Colombian Gold) x Acapulco Gold
Afghan (pure indica from the Hindu Kush mountains): short, compact stature, dense resinous buds, fast flowering, heavy trichome production, deep relaxation effects. Contributed dense bud structure, resin production, compact growth, shortened flowering time. Colombian Gold (pure sativa from Santa Marta mountains, Colombia): tall vigorous growth, complex tropical terpene profile with lime, spice, and skunk notes, uplifting energetic effects. Contributed potency, complex terpene chemistry, cerebral effects. Acapulco Gold (pure sativa from Guerrero state, Mexico): excellent bud production and stability, smooth smoke, golden-hued buds. Shortened the flowering period, improved yield, enhanced aroma and stability.
Lineage Dispute
Dutch Passion lists the ratio as 50% Colombian Gold, 25% Acapulco Gold, 25% Afghan, which inverts the Colombian and Acapulco contributions relative to the breeding order described by Sam the Skunkman himself. Ed Rosenthal has speculated that Thai genetics may also be present but this has never been publicly acknowledged.
Terpene Profile
Myrcene — 0.7-1.4% — earthy, musky, herbal; the backbone of the dank character; contributes to physical relaxation
Limonene — 0.3-0.9% — tart citrus zing, sweet undertones; supports euphoric/uplifting onset
Beta-Caryophyllene — ~0.5% — spicy, peppery, woody; the only terpene known to bind CB2 receptors; anti-inflammatory
Alpha-Pinene — 0.3-0.6% — fresh pine, evergreen sharpness; associated with mental alertness
Humulene — ~0.2% — hoppy, earthy, woody; subtle herbal depth
Linalool — Trace — floral, lavender; calming
Aroma: A loud, room-filling bouquet dominated by pungent, acrid skunkiness from volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs, particularly 3-methyl-2-butene-1-thiol). Beneath the skunk layer lie earthy, musky base notes, sweet citrus undertones, spicy herbal accents, and a faint burnt-rubber tang. Breaking up the buds intensifies the skunk character dramatically.
Flavor: Zesty and savory inhale with herbal-earthy notes and rich, dank mouthfeel from myrcene. Sweet citrus appears mid-palate. Smoother, doughy, peppery exhale with a lingering sour-earthy finish. Vaporization intensifies the full terpene spectrum and reveals more citrus and pine complexity.
Effects & Experience
Onset: Rapid cerebral rush with bright, electric euphoria, enhanced sensory perception, and mood elevation. Creative and mentally stimulating.
Social enhancement, talkativeness, focus, and high-definition mental clarity from limonene and pinene. Smooth transition into full-body relaxation without heavy sedation at moderate doses. At higher doses the indica heritage asserts itself with a notably more stoning effect.
Duration: Long-lasting; consistently described as hitting quickly and lasting for a long time.

Growing Characteristics
Grow Tips: Skunk #1 was literally bred to be grown by the masses. Its legendary stability, resilience, and forgiving nature make it one of the best first-grow strains in existence. It tolerates beginner mistakes (inconsistent watering, imperfect pH, mild temperature swings) better than almost any modern hybrid. Germination: standard methods work well with strong germination rates due to IBL stability. Seedlings establish quickly with thick stems within the first week. Maintain 65-70% RH and 70-80F. Vegetative phase: 18/6 light cycle, 400-600W HPS or equivalent LED, 70-85F day temps, 50-70% humidity. Moderate to high feeder — responds well to balanced NPK and organic amendments. Expect vigorous vertical growth with strong lateral branching and a bushier profile than pure sativas. Training: top once above 4th-5th node for bushier growth; recovers from topping very quickly. Excellent response to LST, SCROG (natural branching fills a screen efficiently at ~40cm height), and SOG. Rotate plant daily under fixed light source. Transition/stretch: expect significant stretch — can double in height during first 2-3 weeks of flower. Plan vertical space accordingly. Switch to bloom nutrients reducing nitrogen, increasing P and K. The distinctive skunk aroma begins here — carbon filtration is essential. Mid-flower: resin production ramps up significantly. Reduce humidity to 45-50% as buds densify. Strong airflow with oscillating fans. Support heavy branches with staking or trellis netting — branches can snap under their own weight. Late flower: humidity strictly 40-50% during final 3 weeks. Trichome monitoring from week 7: milky/cloudy = cerebral energetic high, ~20% amber = more relaxed stoning effect. Begin flush 1-2 weeks before harvest. Post-harvest: high calyx-to-leaf ratio makes trimming a pleasure. Slow-dry at ~60F and 60% RH for 14 days minimum to preserve volatile terpenes and VSCs. Minimum 5-week cure in airtight glass jars recommended — burp daily for first 2 weeks then every few days. The aroma deepens and matures considerably during curing. Key warnings: do not underestimate the smell — a single plant in mid-flower can make an entire building smell; industrial-grade carbon filters and negative pressure ventilation are mandatory. Watch for mold not pests — remarkably pest-resistant but dense colas trap moisture; defoliate strategically for airflow. Do not overfeed — start at 75% manufacturer recommended dose. Account for 2x stretch after flipping. Makes an ideal mother plant — clones root quickly and express uniform traits. Finishes early enough for UK, Northern European, and Pacific Northwest outdoor grows.
History & Origin
Developed in the early 1970s by David Watson (Sam the Skunkman) in Santa Cruz County, California. Watson crossed Afghan indica with Colombian Gold around 1974-1975, then outcrossed the result with Acapulco Gold. First seeds sold commercially in 1976 through Sacred Seeds Collective — America's first commercial cannabis seed bank. After a 1982 law enforcement raid, Watson relocated to Amsterdam in 1984-1986 bringing approximately 250,000 seeds. He established Cultivator's Choice and sold genetics to all major Dutch seed companies, launching the modern Dutch seed industry. Skunk #1 won the inaugural High Times Cannabis Cup in November 1988 entered by Cultivator's Choice. A 1988-1989 grow of Sensi Seeds Skunk #1 in England produced the phenotype that became UK Cheese (Exodus Cheese). Watson passed away January 27, 2025 at age 76.
