Big Bud

Also known as: BB, Sensi Big Bud

Breeder: Nevil Schoenmakers / The Seed Bank (1987); refined by Sensi Seeds

One of the most celebrated yield-focused cannabis strains ever created. Its entire breeding program was driven by maximizing harvest weight per square meter. Big Bud delivers massive, dense colas with minimal leaf matter and maximal flower mass. It remains a cornerstone of commercial indoor cultivation nearly four decades after creation, and its genetics underpin many popular modern indica hybrids including Granddaddy Purple and Critical Mass.

Lineage & Genetics

Cross: Afghani x Northern Lights #1 x Skunk #1

Parent strains in encyclopedia:Northern LightsAfghaniSkunk #1

The original Big Bud existed as a clone-only variety brought to America as a cutting from Afghanistan. Afghani landrace indica contributes dense bud structure, heavy resin production, resilience, and high yield genetics. Northern Lights #1 provides potency, compact structure, fast flowering, and served as the backcross stabilization vehicle. Skunk #1 adds hybrid vigor, pest resistance, structural integrity, and skunky terpene complexity.

Terpene Profile

DOMINANT

MyrceneEarthy, musky, herbal; promotes sedation — dominant terpene

DOMINANT

Beta-CaryophylleneSpicy, peppery, clove-like; anti-inflammatory properties

SECONDARY

PineneFresh pine, forest; provides mental clarity

SECONDARY

LimoneneCitrus, sweet; mood elevation

SECONDARY

LinaloolFloral, lavender; calming and anxiolytic

SECONDARY

HumuleneWoody, hoppy; appetite suppression

Aroma: Deep earthy musk and hash-like pungency with sweet fruit, subtle grape, and spice. Skunky, woody, cedar undertones. Cured jar smell is pungent classic dank with immediately recognizable old-school Afghani hash character.

Flavor: Smooth, sweet, earthy hash on inhale. Spicy, molasses-like sweetness with pepper on exhale. Classic indica flavor profile.

Effects & Experience

Onset: Full-body relaxation begins within 5-15 minutes with moderate euphoria

Strong sedation and couch-lock at higher doses. Stress relief is immediate. Appetite stimulation develops within 20-40 minutes. Early onset may include a mild giggly/social phase that fades into deep physical calm. Best suited for evening/nighttime use.

Duration: Long-lasting body effects; heavy sedation builds progressively

Yield (Outdoor)
700-1200 g/plant (climate-dependent)
Difficulty
Easy to Moderate
Height
50-100 cm indoor (compact, manageable); 180-225 cm outdoor

Grow Tips: Branch support is THE critical growing consideration and the single most important tip for Big Bud. The colas become so heavy in weeks 6-9 of flowering that branches will bend, crack, or snap outright without support — this is not optional, it is a requirement. Support methods: bamboo stakes (insert 2-4 around pot perimeter, tie branches with soft ties, position before week 5 of flower), trellis netting/SCROG (install 20-30 cm above canopy, most effective single method), plant yo-yos (adjustable reel clips for 2-3 heaviest branches), or tomato cages for outdoor. Install support structures BEFORE buds get heavy — ideally by week 4 of flower. Attempting to stake a fully-loaded Big Bud in week 7+ risks snapping branches during handling. Mold prevention is the dense bud tradeoff — the massive tight colas create microenvironments where moisture gets trapped, making Botrytis the #1 crop-loss risk. Prevention protocol: oscillating fans 24/7 across canopy, active exhaust extraction, dehumidification essential in flower (target 45% RH from week 4 onward), inspect dense colas daily in late flower for gray/brown patches, strategic defoliation to eliminate moisture-trapping dead spots. Big Bud responds exceptionally well to training: SOG is excellent (natural single-cola structure, run 9-16 plants/m² with short veg), SCROG maximizes canopy and doubles as bud support, LST widens canopy for light penetration, and supercropping strengthens stems to handle weight (do in late veg). Big Bud is a heavy feeder — it tolerates and benefits from higher nutrient concentrations, particularly in flower. Heavy phosphorus and potassium in weeks 2-6 of flower is where massive bud development happens. PK boosters (0-1-3 or similar) are appropriate. Flush with plain water for final 1-2 weeks. Common grower mistakes: underestimating bud weight (#1 mistake — branches fold over in week 7-8), running humidity too high in flower (dense colas + high RH = bud rot), under-feeding (this strain can convert more nutrients into flower mass), over-defoliating (it needs energy for those massive colas), and outdoor growers in humid climates ignoring the mold risk.

History & Origin

The original Big Bud clone circulated in the USA as an elite Afghani cutting before 1983. Nevil Schoenmakers acquired it and released the first seeds in May 1987 (NL#1 x Big Bud x Big Bud — 75% Big Bud backcross) through The Seed Bank. After Nevil's 1990 DEA indictment, he sold his genetic library to Ben Dronkers of Sensi Seeds. Big Bud x Skunk #1 won 1st Place Mostly Indica at the 1989 High Times Cannabis Cup. In 2003, Ken Estes crossed Purple Urkle x Big Bud to create Granddaddy Purple. Big Bud's journey from the USA to the Netherlands is emblematic of the 1980s cannabis genetics exodus driven by the War on Drugs.
