LA Confidential

Also known as: Confidential, Confidential OG, LA Con

Breeder: DNA Genetics

LA Confidential is one of the most decorated pure indica strains in cannabis history. Released by DNA Genetics in the early 2000s, it combines the refined California genetics of OG LA Affie with the raw sedative power of an Afghani landrace. Named High Times Strain of the Year in 2006, it delivers a fast-onset, psychedelic-yet-hammering indica high — profoundly relaxing the body while maintaining initial mental clarity before settling into deep sedation. Prized by medical patients for insomnia, chronic pain, and anxiety, and by cultivators for its beginner-friendly growth habit, fast flowering, and extreme resin production.

Lineage & Genetics

Cross: OG LA Affie x Afghani

Parent strains in encyclopedia:OG KushAfghani

OG LA Affie: three-way hybrid developed circa 1978 by Northern California breeder Johnny Que. Genetics: heirloom Lemon Thai x Pakistani landrace x Colombian Gold. Produces a distinctive fuel-and-lemon aroma similar to OG Kush. Also known as Afghan Bombay Kush. Predates the California OG craze by several years. Afghani: unspecified pure Afghani landrace male contributing heavy body sedation, dense bud structure, exceptional resin production, and compact plant morphology.

Terpene Profile

DOMINANT

Myrcene~0.8-1.2% — earthy, musky, clove-like; drives sedation, muscle relaxation, and enhanced THC uptake

DOMINANT

Beta-Caryophyllene~0.3-0.5% — spicy, peppery, woody; anti-inflammatory, pain relief via CB2 agonism

DOMINANT

Alpha-Pinene~0.2-0.4% — fresh pine, forest, evergreen; mental clarity, bronchodilation

SECONDARY

Linalool~0.1-0.5% — floral, lavender, sweet-spicy; calming, anti-anxiety, sedative synergy

SECONDARY

HumuleneTrace-0.2% — herbal, woody, earthy; appetite suppression

SECONDARY

LimoneneTrace-0.2% — subtle citrus sweetness; mood elevation

Aroma: Classic skunky nose with pine-forward top notes, earthy undertones, and fuel/diesel back notes inherited from the OG LA Affie parent. Pungent but does not linger excessively — often described as discrete for its potency. Deepens during late flowering into pine, fuel, and earthy spice.

Flavor: Smooth, woody pine with spicy warmth on inhale. Earthy, herbal, lightly sweet mid-palate. Slightly sweet exhale with a hash-like, resinous aftertaste. Described as reminiscent of a forest after rain. The Afghani parent's earthy/hash qualities dominate over the OG LA Affie's citrus-fuel character.

Effects & Experience

Onset: Fast-approaching; noticeable within minutes of consumption. Initial cerebral lift with psychedelic mental clarity and mild euphoria.

Rapid body wave — muscles unwind and physical tension releases. Deep sedation follows with couch-lock intensifying progressively. Moderate doses allow functional relaxation; heavier doses are profoundly sedating. Described as psychedelic and energetic with a hammer.

Duration: Long-lasting; 2-4 hours for primary effects.

Grow Tips: LA Confidential grows as a textbook indica: short, compact, extremely bushy with very thick main stem, incredibly sturdy side branching (rarely needs staking), broad wide fan leaves, tight internodal spacing, and minimal stretch during flower transition. Ideal for space-limited grows, small tents, and SOG setups. Two primary phenotypes exist (Pheno A and B), both finishing in 55-60 days with stable equal potency — variation primarily in terpene expression (earthy vs piney vs skunky-spicy). Training: SCRoG is the recommended technique — bushy structure and tight nodes respond exceptionally well to screen training, significantly improving yield on this otherwise moderate yielder. SOG is ideal due to non-stretching compact habit — many smaller plants flipped early fill the canopy quickly. LST responds well, bending and tying branches opens dense interior to light. Benefits from 1-2 toppings during veg. Lollipopping and defoliation are important — strip lower growth and large fan leaves during early-to-mid flower because the canopy grows so dense that lower sites produce larfy buds if not removed. Feeding: heavy feeder, responds aggressively well to generous nutrient schedules. Ensure ample phosphorus and potassium during flower for characteristically dense hard nugs. No finicky micronutrient requirements. Performs predictably on standard schedules in soil, coco, or hydro. Organic nutrient lines produce exceptional results. Environmental targets: veg 70-85F day/7-9F cooler night/55-60% RH; early flower 68-80F/~50% RH; late flower 65-75F/30-40% RH. Purple expression: dropping nighttime temps in final 2 weeks brings out distinctive purple/dark hues — a signature aesthetic trait. Mold and humidity management is the single most important consideration — rock-solid bud density creates humidity pockets invisible from outside the flower. Maintain adequate airflow, keep late-flower RH at 40% or below, ensure good air circulation through the canopy. Vegetates slowly (typical of Afghani-dominant genetics) — allow 3-4 weeks minimum veg before flipping to maximize yield. SOG growers can flip earlier at 2 weeks since it does not stretch. Harvest timing: resist the urge to pull early despite dense trichome coverage. Wait until trichomes shift from clear to milky to 20-30% amber for the full sedative profile. Early harvest (mostly milky minimal amber) shifts effect toward more cerebral, sacrificing the signature knockout sedation. Flowering progression: weeks 1-2 minimal stretch and compact structure; weeks 3-4 flower sites stack tightly; weeks 5-6 buds thicken dramatically with increased resin; weeks 6-7 aroma deepens into pine, fuel, earthy spice; weeks 7-8 ripening with trichome transition. Pest resistance: generally resilient with no major vulnerabilities. Hardy Afghani genetics provide overall robustness. Moderate mold vulnerability due to extreme bud density (see humidity management). Concentrate production: extreme trichome coverage and resin production make it an excellent candidate for hash, rosin, and live resin extraction. Fast flowering combined with heavy resin output provides attractive gram-per-day ratio for extraction-focused grows. Comparable cultivation behavior to Granddaddy Purple but with less sweet terpene profile and shorter flowering time.

History & Origin

OG LA Affie was developed circa 1978 by Northern California breeder Johnny Que from Lemon Thai x Pakistani x Colombian Gold. In the early 2000s DNA Genetics crossed OG LA Affie with an undisclosed Afghani landrace, creating LA Confidential. It placed 3rd in Best Indica at the 2004 High Times Cannabis Cup and 2nd in 2005. In 2005 it also won 1st Place Indica at the IC420 Breeders Cup. In 2006 it was named High Times Strain of the Year — the pinnacle recognition in cannabis genetics. It won 1st Place at the Kush Cup Las Vegas in both 2006 and 2007, and continued accumulating awards through 2015.
