How to Choose Cannabis Clones: 7 Things to Check Before You Buy

Not all clones are created equal. Here's what separates premium genetics from costly mistakes.

Buying cannabis clones is one of the most important decisions you'll make as a grower. The genetics you start with determine your entire harvest — potency, yield, terpene profile, and disease resistance. After 20+ years in the clone business, here's what we tell every new customer to look for.

1. HLVD Test Results

This is non-negotiable. Hop Latent Viroid (HLVD) is an invisible pathogen that can reduce your yields by 30-50% and significantly lower THC content. You can't see it, smell it, or detect it without lab testing. Always ask for PCR test documentation — if a nursery can't provide it, walk away.

2. Root Health

For rooted clones and teens, inspect the root system. Healthy roots are white to off-white, firm, and growing actively. Brown, mushy, or foul-smelling roots indicate root rot or poor propagation practices.

3. Pest Inspection

Check the undersides of leaves for spider mites, aphids, thrips, and fungus gnats. Look for tiny dots (eggs), webbing, or stippling damage on leaves. One infested clone can contaminate your entire garden.

4. Verified Genetics

Ask where the mother plant came from. Reputable nurseries can trace their genetics back to the original breeder. At Prime Cuts, every strain has verified lineage from breeders like Tiki Madman and Relentless Genetics.

5. Stem Thickness and Vigor

A healthy clone has a thick, sturdy stem and vigorous new growth. Thin, leggy, or yellowing clones may be stressed, nutrient-deficient, or from an old, worn-out mother plant.

6. The Right Format for Your Grow

Choose based on your timeline: fresh clones for experienced propagators, rooted clones for standard grows, teens for faster harvests, and talls for immediate flowering. Our buying guide goes into detail on each format.

7. The Nursery's Reputation

Buy from established nurseries with a track record. Look for: how long they've been operating, whether they test for HLVD, the quality of their strain information, and their willingness to provide growing support after the sale.
