Black Jack

Also known as: Blackjack, Black Jack®, SWS01

Breeder: Sweet Seeds

Black Jack (SWS01) is one of Sweet Seeds' flagship cultivars, bred from an elite Black Domina '98 clone crossed with an exceptional Jack Herer clone selected for its intense Haze-type incense aroma. The result is a balanced, high-vigor hybrid that combines the bud density and resin output of Black Domina with the cerebral stimulation and complex terpene profile of Jack Herer. Known as a heavy resin producer, it adapts well to both indoor and outdoor environments and has accumulated 10 cannabis cup awards since 2008, including a Best Hashish prize. Growers praise its rock-hard bud structure, slow tolerance build, and strong hybrid vigor, though it can be slightly finicky with magnesium uptake.

Lineage & Genetics

Cross: Black Domina '98 x Jack Herer

Black Domina '98 — Sweet Seeds' in-house selection of Sensi Seeds' Black Domina (Afghan x Ortega x Northern Lights x Hash Plant), a four-way indica cross known for extreme resin production, dark coloration, and dense bud structure. Jack Herer — Sensi Seeds' legendary sativa-dominant hybrid (Northern Lights #5 x Haze C) x (Skunk #1 x Haze C), renowned for its cathedral-incense Haze aroma, cerebral energy, and multiple Cannabis Cup wins.

Lineage Dispute

Sweet Seeds (breeder) lists Black Jack as a 50/50 Indica-Sativa hybrid. Many dispensary databases and review sites (AllBud, HeyAbby, NoKidsAllowed) report it as 70% Indica / 30% Sativa. The breeder's own data sheet is the authoritative source; the 70/30 figure appears to be an error propagated across secondary databases.

Aroma: Immediately recognizable pine-forward nose with a complex cathedral-incense backbone inherited from Jack Herer. Secondary notes of lemon-citrus, black pepper, fresh-cut wood, and earthy spice. A subtle floral-tropical sweetness from ocimene rounds out the profile. Nose intensifies significantly after 3–4 weeks of curing.

Flavor: Very pronounced Haze character on the inhale — woody, incense-laden, and slightly sweet. The exhale shifts to pure spicy pine with peppery and citrus undertones. Some phenotypes show a surprising bubble-gum sweetness on the back end. Smooth smoke that does not produce a choking effect.

Effects & Experience

Onset: Fast-acting; cerebral effects begin within 5–15 minutes of consumption.

Opens with an uplifting, euphoric head rush that brings mental clarity, focus, and creative energy. Gradually transitions into a smooth full-body relaxation that soothes muscle tension without heavy sedation. The balance between stimulation and calm makes it versatile — energizing at lower doses, more meditative and spacey at higher doses. Users consistently report elevated mood and a sense of happiness.

Duration: 1.5–3 hours depending on dose and tolerance. Tolerance builds very slowly, which is notable among hybrids.

Height
Indoor: 90–140 cm (bushy and squat profile with ~61% stretch after flip). Outdoor: up to 3 meters in open ground with full sun.
Environment
Performs well indoors and outdoors. Fully adapted to indoor grows and responds to all training methods. Outdoors, thrives in temperate and Mediterranean climates with harvest in early October.

Grow Tips: Magnesium-hungry strain — supplement CalMag throughout, especially under LEDs. SeedFinder grower review specifically flags magnesium as the main nutrient sensitivity. Buds frost up early and become super dense from week 5 of flowering; support heavy colas with trellising to prevent branch snap. Top above the 4th–5th node and use LST or SCROG to manage the ~61% stretch and maximize lateral bud sites. The strong side branching responds exceptionally well to training. Drop humidity to 30–40% in late flower — the rock-hard bud density makes this strain susceptible to botrytis if humidity is not controlled. Cure for a minimum of 3–4 weeks in sealed glass jars; growers report the pine, citrus, and incense terpenes sharpen dramatically with extended cure time and are muted without it. Great resin producer suitable for hash-making — won 2nd Prize Best Hashish (X Revolta Verde, Girona, 2008). Heavy trichome coverage makes it a viable candidate for ice-water extraction, though no strain-specific wash yield data is published. Flush with plain pH-balanced water (6.0–6.5 in soil) for the final 7–10 days to let the terpene profile express cleanly.

History & Origin

Black Jack (SWS01) was one of the earliest releases in the Sweet Seeds catalog, bred in Valencia, Spain, from an elite Black Domina clone selected in 1998 and a standout Jack Herer pheno chosen for its intense Haze-incense aroma. It quickly became one of their most iconic and best-selling strains, earning 10 cannabis competition awards between 2008 and 2017 across Spain, Italy, Argentina, and Uruguay. Sweet Seeds subsequently expanded the line with Black Jack Auto, Black Jack F1 Fast Version (SWS49, crossing S.A.D. Auto with the original Jack Herer clone for 7–8 week flowering), and Black Jack CBD (SWS68, a 1:1 THC:CBD version).
