Breeder: Brothers Grimm Seeds (MrSoul)Brothers Grimm Seeds →
Cinderella 99 is the plant that proved a sativa-dominant cultivar could finish in seven to eight weeks at the size of an indica, which is why High Times called it the holy grail of indoor marijuana and why it still matters to cultivators three decades on. Its cultivation value is the package MrSoul cubed for: no stretch after the flip, preflowers during veg so plants can be sexed before flowering, an extremely high flower-to-leaf ratio, outrageous resin, and a nose loud enough to overwhelm a carbon scrubber. Its genetic value is larger still, since it is the confirmed parent of Grapefruit and of Space Queen, Apollo 11 and Cinderella Pineapple, with SeedFinder counting roughly 300 direct descendants.

Lineage & Genetics
Cross: Princess x P.94 male (Princess cubed with Shiva Skunk)
Princess is the true seed-mother, a clone grown from one of roughly ten seeds found in a two-gram Sensi-branded cello pack of Jack Herer bud bought at the Sensi Smile coffeeshop in Amsterdam. The breeder describes her as compact, short and non-stretching yet clearly sativa-dominant, finishing in 50 days under 12/12, with outrageous resin, a pineapple scent carrying an 'evil' rotting-meat undertone, a Haze-like trippy and paranoia-prone high, and never a hint of hermaphroditism after two years of cloning; her only structural weakness was branches that flopped over under heavy buds and needed support in the final two weeks. MrSoul pointed readers to the 'Yellow Cab' centerfold in the May 1998 High Times as an image of her, a single-source and unverified detail. Two sister females came out of the same bud, Genius (mother of the Apollo lines) and Cafe Girl. Jack Herer is Princess's presumed mother, described by MrSoul as an unstable strain bred from an unequal combination of Skunk #1, Northern Lights #5 and Haze, and expanded by SeedFinder, marked 'probably', as (Northern Lights #5 x Haze) x (Skunk #1 x Haze); her pollen donor is unknown. Shiva Skunk (Sensi Seeds, listed by SeedFinder as Northern Lights #5 x Skunk #1) was chosen as a heavy-yielding, dense, resinous plant to strengthen Princess's branches, and MrSoul records that the Shiva-heavy P.50 generation was mellow, single-cola and unstable and that the Shiva traits were deliberately bred back out. The intermediate cubing generations, as the breeder describes them: P.50 gave heavy single-cola plants with a mellow high and a sweet fruity scent, unstable enough to show a ten-day spread in maturation across twenty seedlings; P.75 brought back Princess-like flower clusters and a more tropical pineapple aroma, splitting into a short dense potent phenotype and a tall huge less potent one, with a balanced body and mind effect and citrus flavor; P.88, released as Cinderella 88, was fast, with frosty buds in seven weeks, dense nuggets tasting of wild berries, distinctly orange pistils, and a cerebral, paralyzing high. Selected males from each generation were crossed back to Princess, and the final P.94 male x Princess cross is Cinderella 99.
Lineage Dispute
The breeder formula is Princess (female clone) x a selected P.94 male, which MrSoul describes as technically P97, and the popular shorthand 'Jack Herer x Shiva Skunk' is a simplification rather than the cross. Cannoptikum explains why: Jack Herer is only the confirmed maternal side of the seed Princess grew from, her pollen donor is an unidentified mystery male whose pollen reached Sensi's grow room, and Shiva Skunk entered later as the first cubing male; Leafly compounds the confusion by listing only Jack Herer as a parent. The first cubing male is itself disputed between two breeder accounts. The 2017 text and the official history say MrSoul crossed a male from Sensi's Shiva Skunk to Princess to create P.50, while his June 2000 write-up says he put pollen from one of the males out of the Jack Herer bud seeds onto a heavy-yielding, dense, resinous Shiva Skunk female and then grew those seeds to get the males used on Princess, which would make the P.50 father a Princess-sibling x Shiva Skunk hybrid and matches the cubing rule MrSoul states himself, 'preferably her father or a brother'. Both versions come from the breeder; the current text is the official position and the discrepancy is unresolved. The naming arithmetic also shifted: the June 2000 text calls P.94 itself 'Cinderella 99' and lists a further P.97 stage, while the 2017 text makes Cinderella 99 the P.94 male x Princess cross and therefore technically P97, which SeedFinder carries as an alias. The year Princess was found is given as 1997 in the June 2000 post and 1996 in both the 2017 text and the official history, and 1996 is the breeder's current position. In the June 2000 account MrSoul also wrote of Princess 'I assume she's an F2 JH', whereas the 2017 version calls her father a totally unidentified mystery plant. Flowering time differs between releases: version 1.0 finished in about 7.5 weeks, while the 2016-onward 2.0 is listed at 8 to 9 weeks, which an Overgrow member attributes to MrSoul having to select a new breeder male, a single-source explanation. Type classification is inconsistent: SeedFinder says mostly sativa, the breeder calls Princess clearly sativa-dominant yet short, Leafly's header says hybrid while its text says sativa-dominant, and a distributor's 'Sativa (90%+)' figure has no second source. Cannabinoid figures vary by sample and release, with the breeder's 2022 COA for the feminized C99 XX at 21.20% total THC and 0.05% CBD against Leafly's 18% THC and 1% CBG. Terpene dominance is disputed between limonene (Leafly's aggregate) and beta-caryophyllene (the breeder COA), and a claim that the strain is frequently terpinolene-led at 0.3 to 1.2% is unverified and unsupported by any lab cited. Name confusion is heavy: SeedFinder lists roughly eleven different strains sharing the Cinderella 99 name, and the Female Seeds, Mosca, Gypsy Nirvana, G13 Labs, Original Harvest, Royal King and Blimburn lines are separate releases, remakes or reinterpretations whose specs say nothing about the original plant. Among the descendants, Grapefruit's co-parent is disputed (a Thai sativa plus an automatic per Female Seeds, an unknown or strongly fruity sativa per others) as is its original breeder, Rosetta Stone's formula is unresolved across four accounts, and Leafly's listing of Amnesia and Sour Apple as C99 children is unverified.
Terpene Profile
Limonene — Dominant in Leafly's aggregated Certified Strain Science data, which comes from products tested in Leafly-certified labs, and second in the breeder's own lab work. The breeder's Certificate of Analysis for the feminized C99 XX, tested in September 2022, reports d-limonene at 2.14 mg/g behind beta-caryophyllene. Which of the two leads is genuinely disputed; limonene is used as the single dominant value here with the caryophyllene-led COA noted.
Caryophyllene — Largest peak in the breeder's 2022 COA for C99 XX at 4.36 mg/g out of 11.41 mg/g total terpenes, or about 1.14%, and second in Leafly's aggregate. PhenoDB also names caryophyllene alongside limonene and myrcene, with no percentages given.
Myrcene — Third in both the breeder COA (beta-myrcene at 1.92 mg/g) and Leafly's aggregate, which makes the top-three set of caryophyllene, limonene and myrcene verified by two independent sources even though their order is not.
Humulene — Roughly 1.15 mg/g in the C99 XX COA, read as alpha-humulene. The column layout of that PDF makes the minor-analyte assignments hard to read reliably, so only the top three peaks should be treated as firmly established.
Linalool — A smaller peak in the C99 XX COA, below humulene, with the same PDF-legibility caveat.
Fenchol — A smaller peak in the C99 XX COA, with the same PDF-legibility caveat.
Pinene — A smaller peak in the C99 XX COA, with the same PDF-legibility caveat. Note that a claim the strain is frequently terpinolene-led at 0.3 to 1.2% cites no lab and is not supported by the breeder COA, and a separate published profile listing 1.04% total terpenes with terpineol, myrcene, limonene and terpinolene gives no sample provenance, so terpinolene dominance should be treated as unverified.
Aroma: Sweet tropical fruit led by pineapple, with a funky undertone that the breeder never tried to hide. MrSoul wrote that Princess smells very much like pineapple both during flowering and when dried, with an 'evil' note like rotting meat, and the 2017 text describes a heavenly aroma of tropical fruit and rotten meat that is not at all skunky, adding that someone walking past the flower room might mistake it for tropical flowers; the official history calls it a pronounced pineapple scent. An early breeder growing note says a scent of tropical fruit and berries begins to fill the room at three weeks of 12/12 and just keeps getting more overpowering until they are done. A grower's version is blunter: very sweet and tangy, zesty fresh pineapples with skunk piss, and a carbon scrubber that has a hard time covering it. Leafly's consumer aggregate lists citrus, grapefruit and flowery. Pineapple and grapefruit are the two classic phenotype descriptors, and Gypsy Nirvana's release notes and Female Seeds' separate line both describe the same two phenotypes.
Flavor: Very fruity, in the breeder's words, and connoisseur quality when cured. The pineapple carries through from the flowering room into the dried and cured bud, with citrus and grapefruit the alternate phenotype expression; the P.75 generation was described as citrus-flavored and P.88 as tasting of wild berries, which gives a sense of the flavor range inside the line. Leafly's top flavors are citrus, grapefruit and flowery. Some cuts keep the funky, rotten-meat or skunk-piss undertone behind the fruit.
Effects & Experience
Onset: A creeper that builds over about ten minutes, per the breeder.
Racy, cerebral and genuinely strong. MrSoul called it trip weed with a speedy, scary high and wrote that two hits of Princess will induce your body to tremble involuntarily and your heart to race and paranoid thoughts, very much like Haze; he described the Cinderella 88 and 99 buzz as very cerebral, with the jitters as the only body effect, suited to activity rather than the sofa. Consumers agree on the direction: Leafly's 1,204 ratings list energetic, uplifted and focused as the top effects and anxious, paranoid and dry mouth as the top negatives. A THCFarmer grower describes it as very racy and capable of causing confusion, with paranoia as a side effect, before a more colorful, blissful, happy, fun high sets in. The anxiety and paranoia risk at higher doses is real and well documented, so starting low is the sensible approach.
Duration: No breeder duration figure exists. One THCFarmer grower reports the racy phase giving way after a couple of hours to a milder, happier high, which suggests a multi-hour experience, but that is a single account.
Commonly Reported Uses
Grower's Notes
Cinderella 99 was built for the indoor room. MrSoul cubed Princess, by his account a 50-day, pineapple-scented Jack Herer seedling, to keep those traits while fixing her one flaw, branches that flopped under heavy buds late in flower.
Growth Structure and Training
Flipped at 18 inches, a plant finishes near 48 inches, and preflowers always show at the fifth to seventh branch set in veg, so plants can be sexed before flipping (breeder). MrSoul tops at the fourth branch set at three to four weeks and flips when branches reach a foot. Brothers Grimm suggests SOG, SCROG or multi-top bushes with cages or stakes; despite the stiffer-limb claim, growers still net. The KOS "F4" line, a Bros Grimm descendant and not a Brothers Grimm release, stretched 1.5 to 2x. Seed runs vary: Rollitup growers saw a short bush beside taller stretchers, and a Mosca C99 BX-1 run threw long-internode plants.
Flowering Time and Harvest
The breeder lists 56 to 63 days and regular-seed listings 56 to 65, against about 7.5 weeks for the original 1999-2002 line, a gap one Overgrow member attributes to a new breeder male. Observed: days 60 and 62 on four Brothers Grimm plants (GrowDiaries), and day 54 on the 2016 reissue, which that grower said could have run 10 to 14 days more. KOS purple phenotypes reportedly need 8.5 to 9 weeks. Vendor guides put outdoor harvest in late September to October.
Nutrient Management
The breeder calls for extra silica, calcium and magnesium, fitting a plant bred for stronger branches. The KOS grower reports wide pH tolerance and a dislike of overwatering. No EC or PPM targets are documented.
Growing Media
Soil is said to bring out the aroma best (Leafly's sponsored guide), and diaries show organic soil, Pro-Mix and coco working; a Mosca BX-1 hydro drip run finished small SOG plants.
Environment and Climate
Vendor guides converge on 68 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit and 40 to 50% humidity in flower (guidance, not trial data). Outdoors it wants dry air or steady wind.
Lighting
The breeder asks for strong light only. One diary ran 450 to 650 PPFD under LED.
Pest and Disease Resistance
The claims conflict: retailers call it highly mold- and pest-resistant, while the KOS grower calls it "not super resistant to mold, or plant parasites" and wants a clean room. Hermaphroditism is better documented: the breeder says Princess never hermied in two years of cloning and C99 plants never herm, while KOS adds that light leaks, heavy overfeeding or drought can trigger it.
Yield
It is fast rather than heavy. Breeder figures via retailers: 4 to 5 oz from a 48-inch plant, 110 to 230 g per square meter indoors, about 450 g per plant outdoors, and 25% more than Princess. Brothers Grimm seed logged 139.9 g dry per plant on a four-plant run, with GrowDiaries harvests spanning 18 to 140 g. The KOS F4 report calls yield below average.
Bud Structure and Trichomes
Dense, resin-coated flowers with very few leaves; one grower called trimming a delight. The breeder has them fat, dense and frosty by four to five weeks of 12/12, with cola tops around five weeks sending braid-like leafless projections out behind hundreds of white pistils. They look like mild foxtailing but are normal here. The pineapple phenotype is the one hunters chase.
Color Development
Orange pistils are the signature, distinctly orange per the breeder and neon orange to one grower, a telltale sign of real Brothers Grimm stock. Purple is release-dependent: an Overgrow grower saw none in version 1.0 across dozens of plants, while the 2016 reissue notes describe a fairly high percentage of purple leaf edges and calyxes.
Drying and Curing
Thin stems make it dry fast, so watch the room, not the calendar (KOS). No cure protocol is documented; the breeder says only that the pineapple scent persists in dried bud and cured flower is connoisseur quality.
Wash and Extraction
The breeder describes resin production as outrageous and heavy. No ice-water hash or rosin return for Brothers Grimm C99 is published, so any figure is unverified.
History & Origin
Rick Campanella, better known as MrSoul, began breeding in 1986 to 1987 while working as a nuclear engineer, and became the American distributor for the Super Sativa Seed Club in 1987. In 1996 by the breeder's current dating, or 1997 by his June 2000 post, he grew out seeds found in a Sensi-branded pack of Jack Herer bud from Amsterdam and kept three females: Princess, Genius and Cafe Girl. Brothers Grimm Seeds, a two-person partnership of MrSoul and Sly, was founded in 1996 and distributed through the Canadian reseller Heaven's Stairway. After cubing Princess through P.50, P.75, P.88 (released as Cinderella 88) and P.94, the original Cinderella 99 seeds were made in 1999, and the breeder's product page says the strain has captivated growers since its debut that year. MrSoul published 'A Cinderella Story' online in June 2000, traced by Overgrow members to the CannabisWorld forums. Brothers Grimm shut down in 2002 over security concerns and MrSoul moved to Europe; original stock was depleted and C99 reached cult holy-grail status. In 2015 he retrieved the Princess clone and saved seed and relaunched in Colorado with Duke Diamond, and in 2016 the re-released C99 seeds, made by selecting a new P94-generation male and pollinating Princess exactly as in 1999, went on sale. Feminized C99 production also began in 2016 by the breeder's account, or 2017 per a distributor quoting breeder copy; the feminized version, Cinderella XX, is Princess crossed with a selected resin-heavy C99 female used as the pollen donor. The official history page was published in 2023. Campanella is now joined by his wife Laura Campanella, 'MrsSoul', who is CEO and co-owner of the revived company. One further cross belongs in the record with a caveat: Killer Queen, Vic High's G13 and Hash Plant clone crossed with a C99 male, is listed in the Brothers Grimm catalog, but only one source was found for that formula, so it is unverified.
