What Is HLVD (Hop Latent Viroid)?

The silent epidemic affecting 30-70% of cannabis clones HLVD (Hop Latent Viroid) — also called HLVd or HpLVd — is a small, circular single-stranded RNA pathogen that infects cannabis plants. Originally identified in hops, it has become the most widespread disease in commercial cannabis, estimated to affect 30-70% of clones in circulation.

HLVD Symptoms

HLVD is called a "silent killer" because infected plants often look healthy during vegetative growth. Symptoms typically appear during flowering: Reduced trichome production — less frost, lower potency 30-50% yield reduction — smaller, less dense buds Stunted growth — shorter internode spacing, reduced vigor Brittle stems — stems snap instead of bending Altered terpene profiles — flowers smell different or weaker THC reductions of 50% or more compared to clean plants of the same strain

How HLVD Spreads

Contaminated tools — scissors, razors, and pruners are the #1 vector Mechanical transmission — any tool that contacts plant sap can carry it Infected clones — the most common way HLVD enters a garden Shared water — recirculating hydro systems can spread it

Prevention

The most effective prevention is only purchasing clones from nurseries that PCR test for HLVD. At Prime Cuts Nursery, every clone is tested and certified HLVD-free before sale. Additionally: Sterilize all cutting tools between plants (10% bleach or 70% isopropyl) Quarantine new clones for 2 weeks before introducing to your garden Test mother plants regularly — at least every cycle Use fresh gloves when handling different plants Learn more: Clone Buying Guide | Pest & Disease ID
