Blue Moonshine
Also known as: Original Blue Moonshine
Breeder: DJ ShortDJ Short →
Blue Moonshine is DJ Short's short, resin-caked indica selection out of the same Blue Family gene pool that produced Blueberry, and for cultivators its importance is largely genetic: it is the direct parent of White Moonshine (The White x Blue Moonshine) and therefore a grandparent of Sin City Seeds' Blue Power and the rest of Sin City's Moonshine line, including Aliens On Moonshine and Raskal Berries. The plant itself is a true hash plant in the breeder's own words, finishing in 7 to 9 weeks as a compact, rock-hard, trichome-coated bush with an above-average yield and a very good bud-to-leaf ratio. Seed has been out of production since Dutch Passion's remaining stock sold out around the end of 2014, so most growers now meet these genetics through the descendants rather than through a seed pack. DJ Short has said in an interview that he released the super-potent selections from his work as Blue Moonshine, and Dutch Passion brought the line to the Dutch market in 1998 alongside Blueberry, Flo, Blue Velvet and Blue Heaven before he split from that collaboration; growers describe Old Time Moonshine as a later generation of the same line, while White Moonshine, Mosca's Blue Moon and Dutch Passion's feminized Blue Moonshine are separate products.

Lineage & Genetics
Cross: Blue family (Highland Thai / Purple Thai x Afghani)
What follows is family context, not a breeder-confirmed parent list for this specific cross; DJ Short has never published the exact parents of Blue Moonshine. The Blue Family foundation itself is verified and breeder-sourced: all of his Blue lines come from three P1 groups, a Highland 'Juicy Fruit' Thai, an Oregon 'Purple Thai' (Highland Oaxaca Gold x Chocolate Thai), and an Afghani indica that supplied the male. Afghani (indica P1, male side) is the dominant contributor to Blue Moonshine's character, and DJ Short describes it as short with large wide leaves, stout and thick-stemmed, early to very early maturing, producing large dense buds that smell earthen to skunk with a generally sedative smoke; he says it reached him through the Northern California and Southern Oregon growing community around 1979, and that he selected the male for stout full structure and a strong musky skunkish odor. Highland 'Juicy Fruit' Thai (sativa P1, female side) is described by the breeder as a maze of many branches in a full bushy tangle, late-blooming at 10 to 16 weeks indoors, with at least minimal hermaphroditism. Purple Thai (Highland Oaxaca Gold x Chocolate Thai, female side) is described as symmetrically branching, tall, and late to bloom. Blueberry appears here only as a relative: SeedFinder lists it as Blue Moonshine's immediate ancestor, and Dutch Passion describes Blueberry as about 80% indica and 20% sativa, mainly Afghani indica with Thai and minor Oaxacan sativa. Temple Flo (Purple Thai x Afghani) and HTAF (Thailand x Afghani) are database ancestors per SeedFinder and GrowDiaries, with no independent breeder confirmation of their role in Blue Moonshine specifically.
Lineage Dispute
Almost everything past 'DJ Short Blue Family indica' is contested, because the breeder never published the cross. Pedigree and generation: SeedFinder's genealogy records Blue Moonshine as an F3 selection off Blueberry, while an ICMag grower says it is the F5 of its line with DJ Short's Old Time Moonshine as the F6 and 'may be 1 generation off'. AllBud takes a third position, calling the parentage unknown and the plant a 50/50 hybrid, which conflicts with the breeder's own 'super potent blueberry Indica' description and is disregarded here. The SeedFinder, GrowDiaries and Sin City genealogy trees all repeat one database-derived pedigree (Blueberry, Blueberry Line, Temple Flo, Purple Thai, Afghani, HTAF), so they are one line of evidence rather than three. Blueberry relationship: Cannoptikum states outright that Blue Moonshine is not an alternative name for Blueberry, Overgrow calls it a cousin, and Dutch Passion sold it as a separate Blue Family member, so it is a Blueberry-family line and not a renamed Blueberry. White family confusion: DJ Short's line 'The Blue version of the White family (White Widow, etc)' is a positioning statement about frosty, trichome-heavy style, not a pedigree claim, and no source documents White Widow in the cross. Flowering time: DJ Short says 7 to 8 weeks (about 45 to 55 days), Dutch Passion says 9 weeks with a mid-November outdoor harvest, Leafly says usually flowering by 8 weeks, and a 2016 AllBud grower harvested at 58 days. Seed stock: sources disagree on whether Dutch Passion's regular seed was identical to DJ Short's, with one ICMag poster saying DJ sold his parent plants to Dutch Passion and others in the same thread saying he had no say or input in their breeding program and left over lack of cooperation; Mr-Hanf and Overgrow describe minimal selection input. The feminized version is distributor-only, and SeedFinder states DJ Short's Blue Moonshine was never available as feminized seed. Cannabinoids: Leafly lists 12% THC and 1% CBG, AllBud 13% THC with very low CBD, and PhenoDB 25% THC with 4 to 6% CBD tagged as breeder data; no breeder or distributor source reproduces the PhenoDB pairing, which is implausible for a 1990s Afghani-dominant line, and no certificate of analysis traceable to original stock was found. Breeder biography: Dutch Passion's copy calls DJ Short 'the Canadian breeder', while his own site and the Grantland profile describe a Detroit native working out of Oregon since 1978; the breeder's account is followed here. Naming: Leafly lists 'Blue Moon' as an alias, but ICMag posters say Mosca's Blue Moon is a different, unrelated strain, and SeedFinder carries roughly three other unrelated 'Blue Moonshine' entries from other breeders, all excluded from this entry. Descendant attribution: the lineage of White Moonshine as The White x Blue Moonshine is verified, but its breeder is only probable, credited to OG Raskal by the Sin City origin story and a SeedFinder description fragment while SeedFinder's own breeder field reads 'Unknown or Legendary'; Dark Coast Seed's claim that Blue Power itself is The White x Blue Moonshine is an error, since that cross is White Moonshine.
Terpene Profile
Caryophyllene — The only lab-reported dominant terpene, and it should be read as unverified. Leafly reports caryophyllene first in data sourced from products tested in Leafly Certified labs, but that is a single source and the samples were US dispensary product labeled Blue Moonshine that cannot be tied to original DJ Short or Dutch Passion stock.
Humulene — Second in Leafly's lab-sourced ranking, carrying the same single-source and provenance caveats. No breeder-published terpene analysis for Blue Moonshine was found; DJ Short now sends samples to The Werc Shop for terpene data on his lines, but no Blue Moonshine result is public.
Limonene — Third in Leafly's lab-sourced ranking, again unverified. A related caution: the breeder lists Velvet Krush as high in myrcene, limonene and beta-caryophyllene, and an ICMag grower calls Velvet Krush a reworked Blue Moonshine, but that relationship is unverified and the Velvet Krush profile must not be transferred to this strain as fact.
Aroma: Berry and blueberry lead, and that much is verified: DJ Short calls it a blueberry indica, AllBud lists blueberry, earthy, floral and sweet aromas, and Leafly lists plum, blueberry and berry among the top notes. Over the top of the fruit sits the fermented, sharp note that reportedly gave the strain its name, described by Leafly as a sharp and fruity smell that brings to mind fermentation and by AllBud as notes of fermentation. An ICMag grower who ran the original stock reported an actual moonshine whiskey smell alongside a hashy earthiness and a sweet pot character. Hashy and earthy notes fit the breeder's 'true hash plant' framing. Consumer reviewers on Leafly, working from dispensary product of uncertain provenance, go further with grape and blueberry syrup kool aid stench and blueberries warm from the summer sun. Nose intensity is unknown from breeder or distributor sources; Leafly calls the smell sharp and one reviewer calls it a stench, which is why it is rated moderate and flagged unverified here.
Flavor: Sweet blueberry and berry fruit over a hashy, earthy base. AllBud lists berry, blueberry, citrus, pine and sweet; Leafly's top flavors are plum, blueberry and berry. The ICMag grower who compared original Blue Moonshine to Blueberry found it much more hashy in taste, hashy and earthy, with the whiskey-like fermented note and a sweet character; one Leafly reviewer describes the smoke as cotton candy. The fermented or whiskey-like fruit note is a reported observation from two consumer sites and one grower, not a breeder claim.
Effects & Experience
Onset: Unknown. Neither the breeder nor Dutch Passion documents how quickly the effect arrives, and no grower report found gives an onset time.
Narcotic and body-heavy, and this is one of the few points where the breeder and the distributor agree outright. DJ Short's description says it produces a very narcotic experience and a body high, and Dutch Passion sold it as a long lasting, very narcotic experience. The Overgrow strain guide grower report rates the effect couchlock and body stone with potency at 8 out of 10, and SeedFinder's Dutch Passion data rates potency middle-high to high with slightly below average tolerance buildup. Consumer reports are softer and come from dispensary product of uncertain provenance: Leafly readers across 101 ratings list aroused, sleepy and relaxed as the top effects with dry eyes, dry mouth and dizziness as the common negatives, while AllBud reviewers list creative, euphoric, happy and relaxing.
Duration: Long lasting, per Dutch Passion's own description. No source gives an hour count, so the actual duration is unknown.
Commonly Reported Uses
Grower's Notes
Blue Moonshine is a short, stout, Afghani-dominant indica that DJ Short called a true hash plant. Regular seed has been out of production for years, so the cultivation record is his breeder notes, Dutch Passion's release copy, and a few grower reports on stock of uncertain provenance.
Growth Structure and Training
DJ Short described short, stout "kush" plants; Dutch Passion listed about 80 cm finished, one breeder listing near 1 m, and an Overgrow grower recorded about 1 m, short and squat. An ICMag grower on original stock saw a very short, stout plant with dark green leaves and purple stems that vegged slowly, while a Hamppu grower called it very easy to grow. No stretch figure has been measured, and there is no breeder training guidance.
Flowering Time and Harvest
The record is contested. DJ Short lists 7 to 8 weeks, SeedFinder about 53 days, and breeder copy on Hamppu 45 to 55 days. Dutch Passion lists 9 weeks with a mid-November outdoor harvest, Leafly says usually by 8 weeks, some UK resellers list 9 to 10 weeks, and a 2016 AllBud grower harvested at 58 days. One GrowDiaries reviewer cut at 42 days, but on a re-vegged, re-flowered plant, and a SeedFinder user on feminized Dutch Passion seed went to 70 days with one plant unfinished at 80.
Nutrient Management
Feed cautiously and change one thing at a time. A GrowDiaries breeding diary reports that any veg change, whether repotting, light or training, stalled growth for weeks, and that in flower the plants swung between hungry and nutrient-burned. No feeding guidance, EC or PPM figures are published, and no source specifies a medium.
Environment and Climate
Indoor is what is documented; SeedFinder lists both the DJ Short and Dutch Passion entries as indoor-capable. Outdoor performance is unknown beyond Dutch Passion's mid-November harvest note. The buds are extremely dense, so airflow and late-flower humidity control matter.
Pest and Disease Resistance
One data point exists: a GrowDiaries reviewer had Blue Moonshine among five strains flowering through a humidity spike and reported it as one of only two that showed no mold. A SeedFinder user separately got four different phenotypes from four feminized Dutch Passion seeds, all but one hermying badly; that is distributor feminized stock, not DJ Short's regular line.
Yield
Above average per the breeder, with no figure attached; Dutch Passion's SeedFinder data says slightly above average with a very good bud-to-leaf ratio. Growers report less: the ICMag grower found it lower-yielding than his other strains, and the only logged weight is 59 g per plant (GrowDiaries). PhenoDB's 700 g per square meter is single-source and unverified.
Bud Structure and Trichomes
This is the strain's headline trait. DJ Short describes dense, tight, rock-hard nuggets under a strong concentration of tall standing trichomes, Dutch Passion repeats that language, and SeedFinder rates the bud hard and compact. The ICMag grower found even the smallest bud ground out to a full bowl, and Overgrow calls it wonderfully resinous.
Color Development
Purple is phenotype-dependent and is not advertised by either DJ Short or Dutch Passion. Growers report purple stems, purple seedlings, and on one phenotype red-to-purple stems with dark purple fan and sugar leaves; one feminized keeper came out light purple. The nose varies by plant too: blueberry with lavender and musky skunk, sharp sour blueberry with cherry, or a rubbing-alcohol note over sweet fruit.
Drying and Curing
No strain-specific data exists, so a slow dry and a two-week-plus cure is the default for dense indica flower. DJ Short's habit of curing a line for months before release describes his selection process, not a cure spec.
Wash and Extraction
The hash-plant reputation is a breeder claim: DJ Short calls it a true hash plant, Dutch Passion repeats it, and he told High Times that the very potent selections from his work were let go as Blue Moonshine. No wash or rosin returns have been published.
History & Origin
DJ Short, a Detroit native working out of Oregon who has bred cannabis since 1978, built the Blue Family gene pool through the late 1970s and 1980s from Thai, Oaxacan and Afghani P1 stock. The exact year Blue Moonshine was first selected is unknown. In the mid-1990s he supplied genetics to Sagarmatha, the source of Blueberry, Flo and Blue Velvet, then partnered with Dutch Passion; Overgrow records that in that period he also created several new lines including Blue Heaven, Blue Moonshine and Purple Passion. Dutch Passion states that Blueberry was introduced to the Dutch market in 1998 together with Blue Velvet, Blue Moonshine, Flo and Blue Heaven, and PhenoDB says it was introduced to Dutch Passion in the 1990s; the 1998 date is verified only as Dutch Passion's own claim, and the year DJ Short actually bred the plant is unknown. Dutch Passion later sold a feminized version DJ Short never made, noted as newly available by a SeedFinder user in December 2008. A Dutch Passion customer asked in 2015 why Blue Moonshine was no longer produced after the remaining stock sold out around the end of 2014, the company's Blue Moonshine product URL now redirects to a general catalog page, and ICMag posters describe the seed line as extinct or discontinued. DJ Short's later related releases are Old Time Moonshine, which one ICMag poster claims is a later generation of the same line, and Velvet Krush, which another poster calls a reworked Blue Moonshine; both claims are unverified. Seeds Here Now lists Old Time Moonshine as a DJ Short heirloom known for fruity flavor and potent indica effects. DJ Short has publicly asserted sole ownership of the names and parental stock of Original Blue Moonshine and Old Time Moonshine. His current seed brand is Old World Genetics.
