Magic Marker

Breeder: Seed Junky Genetics (Doja Pak release)Seed Junky Genetics →

Magic Marker is Seed Junky Genetics' cross of its own Leafly Strain of the Year winner Permanent Marker with the clone-only RS-11, released through Doja Pak, and it was already being harvested in Seed Junky's flower rooms when Leafly toured them in December 2023. For cultivators it matters as the bridge between two of the most commercially important cuts of the early 2020s: it carries Permanent Marker's inky, solvent nose and RS-11's tropical candy-gas, and every independent description of the finished flower agrees on hard, boulder-dense, trichome-showered buds. The catch is that it is a clone-only selection with no breeder grow sheet, so the yield and feeding figures online are aggregator guesses rather than measured results. Two lab-tested retail lots supply the only measured chemistry on record: a March and Ash lot at 22.29% THC and an Anthologie lot at MPX New Jersey at 27.69% THCA with 1.81% total terpenes, both led by limonene. The cultivar has also started working as a breeding parent, with SeedFinder listing three Summit Smoke hybrids — Green Willie Stranger, Mystic Summit, and Shenlong — built on a Magic Marker x Zoap line.

Lineage & Genetics

Cross: Permanent Marker x RS-11

Permanent Marker (Seed Junky Genetics) is (Biscotti S1 x Sherb Bx1) x Jealousy F2. JBeezy crossed a Biscotti S1 female with his Sherb Bx1 male, selected a keeper, hit it with his Jealousy F2 male, and hunted the resulting seeds, with the work running from 2019 to 2021. Sister selections from the same cross were released as Adios MF and Gunnpowwder, the latter selected by Berner for Cookies, and Doja Pak's Ryan chose the name Permanent Marker. It dropped as $1,000 clones in January 2022, got a global Doja marketing push through spring and summer 2022, and had another $1,000 clone drop in Hollywood on December 15, 2022. It was named Leafly Strain of the Year 2023 on December 5, 2023. The plant is indica-dominant with big, dark, icy buds and a grape candy, creamy berry, and solvent "marker" nose; Leafly calls the effect tingly, chatty, and arousing. Grower-side guides attribute the soapy-floral marker note largely to linalool and say it survives best in fresh-frozen live rosin. RS-11 / Rainbow Sherbet #11 came out of DEO Farms' seed line and was selected by Wizard Trees, then brought to market with Doja Pak. Rob of Deep East Oakland F2'd his OZ Kush selection to make Pink Guava, then crossed Pink Guava with Sunset Sherbet, producing about 120 Rainbow Sherbet seeds; after a falling-out between partners, Scott of Wizard Trees in Los Angeles received seeds from the same stock and selected the #11 and #54 phenotypes. Its character is candy-gas, with tropical guava and citrus over OG fuel and heavy resin, and Gas & Middies lists its terpenes as limonene, myrcene, and linalool. One reviewer noted that RS-11 has been "starting to lose its sweet Zkittles dominance and leaning to more of a Kush side" in later runs. What each parent contributes is reported rather than lab-proven: Permanent Marker brings the inky, solvent, menthol-sherbet marker top note and the Gelato and Biscotti gas, while RS-11 brings grapefruit and tropical sweetness plus a floral-spice finish. Reviewers say the finished bud looks "more like RS11 opposed to PM."

Lineage Dispute

The parents are not in dispute, but three details about the cross are. First, whether the Permanent Marker parent was the Permanent Marker clone or a Permanent Marker Bx1 male is unresolved. Most sources give the plain cross, while Leafly's genealogy article, drawn from Seed Junky's own list of crosses, gives "RS11 x Permanent Marker Bx1" — and that same article's photo caption still says "RS11 x Permanent Marker." Seed Junky does sell a separate Permanent Marker Bx1 line, so the pollen donor may well have been a backcrossed male. The honest record is "Permanent Marker (possibly a Permanent Marker Bx1 male) x RS-11." Second, which parent is the mother is unverified. Seed Junky and Leafly write the cross as RS11 x Permanent Marker; SeedFinder and THCFarmer write it as Permanent Marker x RS-11. If the Bx1 wording is correct, RS-11 (a clone-only female) would logically be the mother and a Permanent Marker Bx1 male the pollen donor, but no source states that outright. Third, clone-only versus seed is contradictory. SeedFinder's breeder index says "Clone only," while its own strain page says "is/was clone only available as feminized seeds," and THCFarmer calls it feminized seed stock. No Seed Junky seed pack named Magic Marker was found at any seed bank; Seed Junky sells seeds of its children, such as Magic Ztrawz, instead. The best reading is a clone-only selection. Several aggregator pages publish lineages that contradict the verified record and should not be used. Cannapedia describes a background combining OG Kush and Tangie that matches no other source and reads as a fabrication. The Leaf Index page for "Magic Marker Weed" lists Biscotti, Sherb backcrosses, Jealousy, and Gelato, which is Permanent Marker's own pedigree with RS-11 omitted — it confused the child with its parent. One JointCommerce page claims the "exact breeder of record is not consistently documented," which is false given the Leafly, SeedFinder, and THCFarmer records. There is no competing "Magic Marker" from another breeder. Every commercial Magic Marker traces to Seed Junky's Permanent Marker x RS-11. Other breeders' crosses of the same two parents are separate strains under separate names and are not Magic Marker: Prism Marker (Elev8 Seeds), Rainbow Marker (Lit Farms), The Hype (Organic Earth Seeds), Permanent Rainbow (Elev8, RS 54 x Permanent Marker), and Blimburn's "Permanent Marker x RS-11" seed. Credit is also frequently misassigned. Wizard Trees and Deep East (DEO Farms) are not credited with Magic Marker in any source found; their role sits one generation back on the RS-11 parent, where DEO Farms bred the Rainbow Sherbet seed line and Wizard Trees selected the #11 phenotype. The idea that Magic Marker is a Wizard Trees or Deep East collaboration is not supported. Doja Pak is the brand, marketing, and distribution partner, not the breeder, and flower brands such as Super Dope and Purplefarm are growers or packagers selling their own runs of the cut. The RS-11 parent carries its own separate dispute — the breeder interview gives Pink Guava x Sunset Sherbet while distributor and processor listings give Pink Guava x OZ Kush — but that concerns RS-11, not Magic Marker. Finally, the grow and potency numbers in circulation are unverified. No breeder grow sheet, no public lab certificate of analysis, and no long-form grow diary of a verified cut was found. The flowering-time, yield, nutrient, and environment figures below come from content aggregators whose pages read as templated and repeat one another nearly word for word, and the THC ranges are brand-reported rather than independently tested.

Terpene Profile

DOMINANT

Limonene — Unverified; no COA. Named as a dominant terpene by two independent grower sources — Purplefarm's own listing, cited by Kind Green Buds, and Super Dope's run. No published lab certificate of analysis for Magic Marker was found, and the one detailed consumer review lists the terpene profile as Unknown, so limonene is a reported rather than measured dominant.

DOMINANT

Caryophyllene — Unverified; co-dominant in reports. The other terpene named most often, appearing in both the Purplefarm and Super Dope listings. Neither source picks a single winner between it and limonene, so the true dominant is Unverified.

SECONDARY

Myrcene — Unverified. Listed among the dominant terpenes by Purplefarm and included in Super Dope's run. Brand-reported, not lab-published.

SECONDARY

Linalool — Unverified. Reported as a secondary floral-lavender note by Super Dope and by The Highest Critic, who describes lavender on the exhale. It fits the Permanent Marker parent, which grower guides say owes its soapy-floral marker note largely to linalool.

SECONDARY

Humulene — Traces; unverified; reported alongside trace ocimene and farnesene. Aggregator pages list these as traces alongside percentage ranges of caryophyllene 0.4-1.0%, limonene 0.3-0.9%, linalool 0.2-0.6%, and myrcene 0.2-0.7%, with total terpenes above 2%. No lab source is cited for any of those figures and the two pages copy each other, so all of them are unverified.

Aroma: Independent descriptions agree closely. Leafly calls it "a stinker, with a pungent mix of astringent, minty chemical notes laced with sherbet sweetness and a tropical fruity twist — like sniffing your favorite marker during art class." The Highest Critic, reviewing a Doja-packaged jar, describes menthol sherbet with a strong, dominating Biscotti and Gelato infused gas, subtly sweeter grapefruit undertones, and a nose "like a Sharpie with a drop of grapefruit juice, and strangely like a floral rendition of Gelonade." Seed Junky retail flower in Michigan is described as sweet and gassy with underlying hints of lime, and the Super Dope run as sharp marker ink and raw gas with an "acrid, almost chlorine-and-permanent-pen bite," candy sherbet, a mint-menthol snap, citrus zest, and a floral lavender base with a peppery sinus sting. The consensus is an inky, solvent marker top note with menthol over sherbet-candy sweetness, a grapefruit, lime, or tropical citrus middle, a Gelato-style gas base, and a floral-spice finish. The nose is loud when the cut is authentic and well grown, but reviewers warn that muted phenotypes and muted cuts are on the market.

Flavor: The aroma carries into the smoke. The Highest Critic reports a florally sweet but spicy essence with "faint traits of pimento, nutmeg & cardamom mixed with lavender" and Gelato undertones on the exhale, with ash burning white to very light silver and leaving an oozing resinous oil ring. Leafly user reviews describe it as gassy, chemical, dank, spicy, and fruity, and one as "fruit, candy, sweets and all kinds of tropical deliciousness."

Effects & Experience

Onset: A euphoric, heady onset, described by Seed Junky retail copy as transforming everyday stress into euphoria with uplifting effects before the body weight arrives.

Two or more independent sources agree on a euphoric, heady start that settles into strong, sedating body relaxation. Seed Junky retail flower is sold as an indica-dominant hybrid with a heady and relaxing buzz that is "optimal for nighttime seshes." The Super Dope run is described as euphoric, relaxed, creative, heavy, and hungry, with a long-lasting body effect and a medium anxiety risk. One aggregator calls it balanced and "uplifting and relaxing depending on the dosage." THC is brand-reported at 25-31% by Purplefarm via Kind Green Buds and at 22-29% by Super Dope, none of it independently verified; CBD is negligible.

Duration: Long-lasting in the body per the Super Dope run; one Leafly reviewer reported sleeping nine and a half hours straight. No measured duration is published.

Seed Junky has published no grow sheet for Magic Marker and GrowDiaries lists zero logged harvests, so the usable guidance comes from the clone sellers who run the cut, two lab-tested retail lots, and the well-documented parents. Aggregator figures are flagged as such.

Growth Structure and Training

No observed stretch measurements exist for the cut itself. Clone sellers point to a leafy, tight-noded plant: King Kong Clones describes very dense colas and says its cut "loves a good defol." Stretch is parent context only, where Leafly describes medium stretch on Permanent Marker indoors and a Reddit grower of its S1 seed saw a phenotype near six feet. Plan on topping, a trellis, and progressive defoliation.

Flowering Time and Harvest

Eight to nine weeks indoors comes from Pig Tail Gardens, which sells a Seed Junky cut and is the closest to first-hand. Aggregators give 63 days (StrainWeaver) or about 60 (GrowDiaries) without citing a grow, and some extend to 8 to 10 weeks with RS-11-leaning expressions at 63 to 70 days.

Nutrient Management

Nothing specific to this cultivar has been published. Permanent Marker is commonly run in hydroponics and Leafly's growers say it "likes light, food," so treat Magic Marker as a likely heavy feeder until real runs say otherwise. The aggregator figures — electrical conductivity 2.0 to 2.4, pH 5.8 to 6.0 in hydroponics or 6.2 to 6.8 in soil — are generic.

Environment and Climate

The aggregator ranges of 20 to 27 degrees Celsius and 40 to 50% relative humidity in flower are generic and unverified. What is documented is geography and medium: indoor commercial rooms in California, New Jersey, and Michigan, hydroponics on the Permanent Marker side, and Pacific Roots Farm growing it outdoors in native soil on Humboldt's Lost Coast for Nasha hash. The nose is loud, so plan odour control late.

Pest and Disease Resistance

No Magic Marker-specific reports exist. Permanent Marker growers warn that dense colas invite botrytis when late-flower humidity creeps up, and this cut's defoliation advice points the same way.

Yield

No measured gram figures exist. King Kong Clones, which sells the cut, calls it an "excellent yielder" with very dense colas, a seller's claim and the only first-hand comment on record. The 450 to 650 g/m² and 900 to 1,500 g per plant figures on content sites cite no grow. Moderate is the honest rating.

Bud Structure and Trichomes

The best-documented trait. The Highest Critic describes "hard density, having a boulder structure… absolutely showered in trichomes," a Leafly user reports "excellent bag appeal dripping in trichomes," and the Super Dope run is chunky with a greasy, frost-thick coat. Retail copy across several states agrees on dense, frosted flowers with orange pistils.

Color Development

Mostly green with orange pistils, with purple in some runs — King Kong Clones describes "dark green and purple buds," Pig Tail Gardens lists a "Green/Neopolitan" profile, and both a Leafly user and the Super Dope run report purple tips. It is not a defining trait.

Drying and Curing

No cultivar-specific protocol is published, so a slow dry near 60 degrees Fahrenheit and 60% relative humidity is the sensible default. Two lab-tested retail lots are the only measured chemistry, both limonene-led: a March and Ash lot at 22.29% THC with limonene 0.566%, beta-caryophyllene 0.532%, humulene 0.182%, and an Anthologie lot at MPX New Jersey at 27.69% THCA and 1.81% total terpenes, led by limonene 0.7%, myrcene 0.45%, linalool 0.21%. Linalool degrades faster than caryophyllene or myrcene in the dry, per a Permanent Marker guide, so a cool dry protects the marker note.

Wash and Extraction

No fresh-frozen return percentage has been published, but there is product data: Pig Tail Gardens reports "above average hash results" without a figure, and Nasha sells Magic Marker hash washed from Pacific Roots Farm's sungrown crop, its green label listing a 55% melt rating and 2% terpenes.

History & Origin

Seed Junky developed Permanent Marker between 2019 and 2021, and RS-11 was circulating as a clone-only cut in California by about April 2022, with Permanent Marker clones dropping in January and December of 2022. Magic Marker's own creation date is Unknown; it cannot predate 2022, when both parents existed. Leafly's December 2023 Strain of the Year feature photographed it being harvested in Seed Junky's rooms and called it part of "the next wave" of Permanent Marker crosses, so it was in production by late 2023, and one reviewer describes it as a recent Doja release. From about 2024 onward, Seed Junky flower was sold under the name in Michigan, and children began appearing: Magic Shotz, Magic Gum Drops, and Magic Ztrawz. On awards, Magic Marker flower took 1st for Heaviest Hitting and 3rd for Best Overall at Zalympix Michigan 2024. Leafly's line that both of Magic Marker's parent strains have won cup titles refers to the parents — Permanent Marker was Leafly Strain of the Year 2023 — and one aggregator's mention of "early competitive showings" names no event and no date, so it is unverified.
