Silver Haze
Also known as: SH, Sensi Silver Haze
Breeder: Sensi Seeds (Nevil Schoenmakers & Ben Dronkers)
Created circa 1989–1990 at the Cannabis Castle in the Netherlands, Silver Haze was the first seed strain to deliver the full-strength Haze experience in a more compact, faster-flowering, higher-yielding form. Named for the thick layer of silvery trichomes that blanket its buds, it helped reverse the decline of psychedelic sativas in an era when indoor growers found pure Haze impractical. The Afghani influence from the Northern Lights lineage adds bud density and resin weight without altering the classic Haze flower structure. Still considered the expert breeder's choice for sativa-dominant projects — DJ Short selected it for Azure Haze (Silver Haze x Blueberry).
Lineage & Genetics
Cross: Silver Pearl x Haze
Haze: The original multi-landrace sativa hybrid (Central American, South Indian, Thai origins), developed in California in the 1960s–70s. Prized as the purest and most powerful sativa ever created, but impractical indoors due to extreme height and 16+ week flowering. Silver Pearl: A now-retired Sensi Seeds hybrid of Early Skunk (Skunk #1 x Early Pearl) and Northern Lights #5. Described by Alan Dronkers as 'the most sativa of all the Early strains,' it was ubiquitous on Dutch coffeeshop menus through the late 1990s. It contributed indoor manageability, frost production, and structural balance while preserving sativa character.
Lineage Dispute
SeedFinder.eu and Sensi Seeds' own 40th-anniversary history (2025) both confirm Silver Pearl x Haze, where Silver Pearl = Early Skunk x Northern Lights #5. However, Sensi's feminized product page simplifies the non-Haze parent to 'a non-dominant Northern Lights strain,' and many secondary sources list the cross as simply 'Haze x Northern Lights #5,' omitting the Skunk #1 / Early Pearl genetics that Silver Pearl carries. CannaGenie notes 'likely NL#5 and perhaps Skunk #1 as well.' The full Silver Pearl parentage is the breeder-confirmed lineage.
Terpene Profile
Myrcene — Musky, earthy foundation balancing citrus brightness
Limonene — Bright citrus lift with lemon and orange zest
Caryophyllene — Spicy, peppery warmth with woody depth
Terpinolene — Herbaceous citrus and pine with floral nuance
Pinene — Pine and rosemary pairing with citrus for brightness
Linalool — Floral lavender notes with calming sweetness
Aroma: Spicy-sweet Haze incense up front with earthy depth, bright citrus peel (lemon), and pine undertones. The classic 'Haze sharpness' is unmistakable — pungent and resinous on the break. Ravi Dronkers described the buds as 'really white, covered in trichomes' with a presentation unlike anything else at the time.
Flavor: Sweet-spicy Haze with herbal complexity on the inhale, peppery mid-palate from caryophyllene, and a citrus-earth finish. Smooth smoke with lingering incense notes. Nordland Seeds describes 'lemon, pine, incense, haze, and spices.'
Effects & Experience
Onset: Fast-acting cerebral uplift within minutes — a pulsating, clear-headed rush that Sensi Seeds describes as 'a few drags are all it takes for mind and spirit to experience a pulsating high.'
Energetic mental clarity with strong creative and euphoric qualities. The high is described as psychedelic and meditative by SeedFinder users. Physical effects remain subtle — a gentle background relaxation that never crosses into sedation. Focus and sociability stay high throughout.
Duration: Long-lasting; SeedFinder rates the effect as 'strong and long lasting.' Expect 2–3+ hours of primary effects with a gentle taper.

Growing Characteristics
Grow Tips: Can be forced to flower almost immediately from clone or seedling — ideal for SOG and SCROG where height control is critical. Responds well to lollipopping and supercropping (Sensi Seeds). Training is essential given the stretch. Slightly sensitive to high temperatures — keep lights at a greater distance than normal (Nordland Seeds / Silver Haze #9 notes). Weeks 6–8 are when the spicy-sweet Haze terpene profile becomes defined; weeks 9–11 bring final trichome buildup — do not harvest early. Good mold resistance (Leafly). Provide strong air circulation for best results. Relatively few leaves compared to average cannabis, making trimming fast and easy (Nordland Seeds). Exceptional trichome density for a sativa — the 'silver' name derives from resin coverage. Sensi Seeds lists the Haze family among top hash strains. No strain-specific bubble hash yield published, but heavy-resin sativas typically return 8–15% of input weight. Fresh-frozen recommended to preserve the terpinolene-forward terpene profile.
History & Origin
Silver Haze was bred circa 1989–1990 by Nevil Schoenmakers and Ben Dronkers at the Cannabis Castle, a large Dutch country estate that served as Sensi Seeds' breeding headquarters. Sensi Seeds' 40th-anniversary article (2025) places Silver Haze in 'Chapter Eight: 1990' and confirms the parents as Silver Pearl and Haze. Sensi's marketing claims it won the 1989 High Times Cannabis Cup, but SeedFinder.eu's records for the 1989 HTCC list the 'Mostly Sativa' winner as 'Early Pearl x Skunk #1 X NL#5 x Haze' under The Seed Bank — genetically related but entered under a different name before 'Silver Haze' was formalized. The strain helped reverse the decline of psychedelic sativas by proving that the full Haze experience could be delivered in an indoor-friendly format. It went on to win extensively at the Dutch Highlife Cup from 2002–2019 and earned 3rd Place at the 2005 HTCC. It is distinct from Super Silver Haze, which is a three-way cross of Haze x Skunk #1 x NL#5 bred by Neville and Shantibaba at Green House Seeds in the mid-1990s.
