Chocolate Diesel
Also known as: Choco Diesel, Chocolate D
Breeder: Maphial (aka Santasmoke) — underground breeder on Cannabisworld.com, mid-2000s. Listed on SeedFinder as 'Unknown or Legendary.' Useful Seeds (RIP) later made F3s; Katsu Seeds produced F4s; Derg Corra Collective released F2s.
Chocolate Diesel is a rare sativa-dominant hybrid created in the mid-2000s by the underground breeder Maphial (Santasmoke). Originally offered only as an auction item in extremely limited quantities, the line nearly went extinct before Useful Seeds, Derg Corra Collective, and Katsu Seeds preserved and advanced it through F2–F4 generations. The strain is best known as one of the three parents of Gorilla Glue #4 (alongside Chem's Sister and Sour Dubb), arguably the most influential hybrid of the 2010s. On its own merits, Chocolate Diesel delivers a fast-onset, cerebral euphoria often compared to a strong cup of coffee — uplifting, focused, and distinctly energizing. The flavor bridges its two parents: earthy cocoa and coffee notes from the Chocolate Trip side meet skunky, acrid fuel from the Sour Diesel v1.5 father. Resin production is heavy, with bulbous trichome heads that extend down sugar leaves, making it a credible candidate for solventless pressing.
Lineage & Genetics
Cross: Chocolate Trip (Katsu's F1 Cut) x Sour Diesel v1.5 (Reservoir Seeds)
Chocolate Trip (mother): A complex sativa-leaning hybrid bred by Dutch Flowers, selected by Katsu. Derived from Indigo Diamond crossed with Chocolate Thai in both directions — (Indigo Diamond x Chocolate Thai) x (Chocolate Thai x Indigo Diamond). Contributes the chocolate/cocoa terpene character, color variation, and occasional indica-leaning phenos with broader leaves. Sour Diesel v1.5 (father): An IBL (inbred line) from Reservoir Seeds, descended from the original Sour Diesel lineage (Original Diesel x DNL, with Chemdawg and Mass Super Skunk/Sensi NL in the background). Contributes the pungent fuel nose, soaring cerebral effect, sativa stretch, and vigorous growth.
Lineage Dispute
Leafly and most consumer sites simplify the lineage to 'Sour Diesel x Chocolate Thai,' which obscures the actual mother — Chocolate Trip, a complex hybrid of (Indigo Diamond x Chocolate Thai) x (Chocolate Thai x Indigo Diamond) selected by Katsu (Dutch Flowers). The father is specifically Sour Diesel v1.5 (an IBL from Reservoir Seeds / 'HeWhoCannotBeNamed'), not generic Sour Diesel. PhenoDB lists a separate 'Chocolate Diesel' by Reeferman Seeds as Chocolate Thai x NYC Diesel — that is a different strain entirely. The original Maphial cross is the one used in GG4.
Terpene Profile
Caryophyllene — Peppery, spicy mid-palate warmth through the cocoa
Limonene — Faint sweet citrus and floral hints on the exhale
Myrcene — Earthy musk grounding the diesel-chocolate duality
Humulene — Woody depth reinforcing the roasted coffee notes
Linalool — Subtle floral sweetness emerging in select phenotypes
Ocimene — Sweet, herbal layer adding to the aromatic complexity
Aroma: Pungent diesel fuel and acrid chemical top notes hit first, followed by a rich layer of dark cocoa and roasted coffee. Skunky, sour undertones emerge on the break, with faint sweet and earthy musky notes underneath. Nose intensity is high — the diesel volatility leaps from the grinder.
Flavor: Smooth earthy chocolate and coffee on the inhale, with a fuel-forward, peppery mid-palate. The exhale reveals the cocoa more clearly, along with subtle sweet citrus and floral hints. Some users report a blueberry sweetness in certain phenos. The aftertaste lingers as a diesel-chocolate duality.
Effects & Experience
Onset: Fast-acting and cerebral — euphoria shoots straight to the head within minutes of inhalation. Often compared to the rush of a strong cup of coffee.
Energetic, euphoric, and focused with strong mental clarity. Promotes talkativeness and sociability. A 'worker's sativa' that provides tunnel-vision focus rather than a scattered, psychedelic headspace. Physically light — no couch-lock or heavy sedation. Some users note mild creative stimulation.
Duration: Peak effects within 30–45 minutes, riding for 2–3 hours. Tails off gently without a crash.

Growing Characteristics
Grow Tips: Top early and use LST or SCROG to manage height and maximize light penetration. Silica supplements strengthen stems against heavy resin-dense colas in final 3 weeks. Feed nitrogen-heavy through mid-veg (she's an N lover) but transition to a lean N:P:K ~1:2:2 in early bloom to curb stretch and favor calyx development. EC 1.2–1.6 in veg, 1.8–2.2 in mid-to-late flower. Cool late-flower temps (low-60s°F nights) maximize terpene expression and can bring out subtle purples. Harvest by trichome color: mostly cloudy with 0–5% amber for the electric cerebral expression; 15–20% amber for a broader, more balanced effect. Dry 10–14 days at 60°F/60% RH for best terp preservation. Some phenos from the Indigo Diamond side run more stout and broad-leafed with tighter internodes.
History & Origin
Created in the mid-2000s by Maphial (Santasmoke), a member of the now-defunct Cannabisworld.com forum. The original seeds were offered auction-only in a run of just 25 packs at $100 each, making them rare from day one. The line combined Dutch Flowers' Chocolate Trip (Katsu's F1 Cut) with Reservoir Seeds' Sour Diesel v1.5 male. The strain achieved underground legend status but nearly went extinct as cuts were lost and seeds ran out. Useful Seeds (RIP) acquired F1 stock, grew out females, and produced F3 seeds to preserve the line. Katsu Seeds subsequently created F4s. Derg Corra Collective released F2s made by hitting six F1 females with two F1 males, explicitly to rescue 'an almost-from-start-extinct variety.' Chocolate Diesel's greatest legacy is as one of three parents of Gorilla Glue #4 — the accidental masterpiece by Joesy Whales and Lone Watie (GG Strains) that won multiple Cannabis Cups starting in 2014 and became one of the most commercially cultivated strains in the world.
Awards & Recognition
- ●No standalone Cannabis Cup wins on record. Primary legacy is as a parent of GG4 (Gorilla Glue #4), which won the 2014 SoCal and Michigan Cannabis Cups, the 2015 High Times Jamaican World Cup, and numerous subsequent awards.
