Archive Seed Bank founder Fletcher 'ThaDocta' Watson selected Moonbow #75 from 200 phenotypes and backcrossed it with the original Zkittlez around 2017, creating Rainbow Belts 1.0. Watson began growing at 17 and started breeding in 2008 out of Portland, Oregon, building a reputation on heirloom genetics. Rainbow Belts existed in limited circles until 2020, when Watson sent genetics to approximately 50 growers — once it hit the clone-seller market, demand exploded. Leafly named it Best Seed to Grow in 2020. By 2021–2023, the strain had crossed over from West Coast connoisseur circles into mainstream dispensary shelves nationwide. Archive subsequently released 2.0 (Rainbow Belts #20 x Rainbow Belts F1 male — a tighter, faster-flowering backcross) and 3.0 (Rainbow Belts #20 x Moonbow 112 F2 #60 — bred specifically for XL hash production, yielding 6%+ fresh-frozen). The 3.0 line has become a dominant force in solventless hash competitions.
