Permanent Marker S1
Breeder: Seed Junky GeneticsSeed Junky Genetics →
Permanent Marker S1 is the selfed seed line of Seed Junky Genetics' Permanent Marker, the Leafly Strain of the Year 2023 clone, and it exists because a $1,000 clone-only cut was never going to reach most growers. It matters to cultivators as the legitimate route into that genetics — Seed Junky's own S1 is the breeder-of-record version, and growers who ran it report the smell landing "exactly on point." What it is not is a uniform reproduction of the clone: pack reports consistently show two to three distinct phenotypes, from a short trichome-dense plant to a two-metre stretcher, so these packs are a hunt rather than a copy. The name also covers more than one seed lot: besides Seed Junky's own feminized packs, Atlas Seed sells an R&D line through Multiverse Beans, and Lit Farms and Elite Clone Seed Company list S1s of their own, so the pack you buy decides what you are actually hunting through.

Lineage & Genetics
Cross: Permanent Marker (selfed)
The only parent of an S1 is the selfed clone, so the relevant detail is the original Permanent Marker cut and its ancestry. Permanent Marker was bred by JBeezy of Seed Junky Genetics, a Los Angeles-area breeding and growing outfit founded in 2007, and was clone-only in its original form. Seed Junky worked on it from 2019 to 2021, and sister phenotypes from the same seeds were released as Adios MF and Gunnpowwder. $1,000 clones were released in January 2022 with another drop on December 15, 2022 in Hollywood, and it launched on both coasts in 2022. It was named Leafly Strain of the Year 2023. The ancestor components, per Leafly's genealogy reporting, are Biscotti S1 (Biscotti selfed, Biscotti itself described as Gelato crossed with an OG Kush line), Sherb Bx1 (Sunset Sherbet, which is GSC x Pink Panties, backcrossed), and a Jealousy F2 male, Jealousy being Sherb Bx1 x Gelato #41 and itself Leafly Strain of the Year 2022 from Seed Junky. Sherbet ancestry therefore enters twice, directly through Sherb Bx1 and again through Jealousy, and the whole family sits in the Gelato and GSC "Cookies" line. The parent cut's grow character matters because it is what S1 seedlings may inherit. JBeezy called it "more of an advanced strain, skill-wise… The growers that figure it out will do well, while the others won't get it to yield for them." In the same article, commercial growers called it easy, branchy, a light- and food-lover, low-stretch, and "one of the plants that always finishes," with golf-ball nugs and a medium yield. A home grower of the cut described it as "a runty finicky little bitch but tastes sooo good."
Lineage Dispute
The central dispute is that "Permanent Marker S1" is not one seed line. At least five different outfits have sold seeds under that name, all described as feminized Permanent Marker crossed to itself: Seed Junky Genetics, the breeder of Permanent Marker and therefore the breeder of record, in 10-seed feminized packs; LIT Farms (also written Lost In Translation), a third-party S1 made from a cut and sold in 6- and 12-seed feminized packs; Atlas Seed, described as R&D stock preserved and sold by the distributor Multiverse Beans in its Preservation Line; Copycat Genetix, which states that "the original clone only reversed to itself to make S1 feminized seeds"; and North Atlantic Seed Co.'s BWL house or white-label line. The other S1s are separate seed lots made from other people's copies of the clone, and nobody can confirm that those copies are the authentic Seed Junky and Doja cut. Seed-type listings contradict each other. Premium Seed Bank lists a "Regular" option for the Seed Junky S1, but a true S1 cannot be regular in the usual sense and no other source offers one, so that is treated as a listing error. One PhenoDB page gives the LIT S1's seed type as "Régulière" while every LIT retail listing says feminized, which is also a database error. The Copycat PhenoDB page contradicts itself by showing "Flowering Autoflower" next to "8 weeks," while the breeder's own text describes photoperiod S1 feminized seeds. Release dates are unresolved. Seed Junky's own S1 release date is Unknown: Leafly says Permanent Marker was available first as a clone in 2022 and then as feminized seeds and crosses, and a Reddit thread from about early 2024 reports the S1 being sold "from the actual breeder who made PM for $200 thru seedjunkygenetics." Seed Junky's documented May 13, 2023 feminized drop covered Permanent Marker crosses (Scratch and Sniff, RS11 x PM, Banana Cream Cake x PM), not the S1. The best-supported window is by early 2024 and possibly 2023. The LIT Farms, Atlas, Copycat, and North Atlantic dates are all Unknown. The parent cut's pedigree is verified in its components but written several ways. Leafly's interview-based account has JBeezy crossing a Biscotti S1 female with his Sherb Bx1 male, selecting a keeper female, and hitting her with his Jealousy F2 male, giving (Biscotti S1 x Sherb Bx1) x Jealousy F2. Doja and several retailers instead write "Biscotti x Jealousy x Sherb Bx1," and Pars Planet writes "(Biscotti x Jealousy) x Sherb BX." The breeder-sourced Leafly account should be treated as authoritative. Separately, SeedFinder and Riverboyz describe the Jealousy parent as a "3rd-generation cut of Jealousy" where Leafly describes a Jealousy F2 male; "third-generation" may be a garbled rendering of F2, and "Jealousy F2" is the form to use. Credit must not be misassigned. Doja Pak / Doja Exclusive selected, named, and marketed the parent cut but did not breed it, and Doja's own page says the strain was "originally selected by Doja Exclusive" without claiming to have bred it. Multiverse Beans, North Atlantic Seed Co., Heritage Seed Bank, Attitude Seedbank USA, Manchester Seedbank, Pars Planet, Riverboyz, and Premium Seed Bank are distributors and seed banks only. Several marketing claims attached to this seed line are unsupported or refuted. Phenotype uniformity "due to selfed genetics" is largely refuted: multiple growers report distinct phenotypes in the same pack, including a short, trichome-dense plant alongside a two-metre stretcher and a candy-to-gas spread in aroma, and Multiverse itself says packs typically show two to three phenotypes. One grower did find five plants very similar, but selfing a hybrid clone does not produce uniform offspring. "High-yielding" is Disputed — the breeder and growers describe a medium, skill-dependent yield, and the single logged GrowDiaries harvest under the S1 name was 42 g from a small plant. "Extraction-ready" is Disputed — one retail source says Permanent Marker washes well, while a solventless grower running Permanent Marker seed packs reported "the worst washers imaginable… hitting sub 1%," getting about 3% only from a Donny Burger x PM cross, against a typical fresh-frozen return of 3% to 6%. "32%+ THC" is Unverified: no S1 certificate of analysis was found at all, S1 figures are breeder and retail claims ranging from 19-25% (Atlas/Multiverse) through 22-28% (LIT) and 28% (GrowDiaries) to a 36-38% Copycat breeder claim, and the parent cut's published retail tests top out below 28%. "Purple-tinted colas" is Unverified — the purple in one documented S1 coco grow was on stems and leaves and was diagnosed as a deficiency, not genetic bud colour. Finally, awards belong to the parent, not to this seed line. Permanent Marker was Leafly Strain of the Year 2023; that is an award for the clone that was selfed, and it does not transfer to the S1. Excluded from this entry: autoflower "Permanent Marker" products, generic "Permanent Marker feminized" seeds of unclear provenance, and the separate Permanent Marker Bx1 and Permanent Chimera lines.
Terpene Profile
Limonene — Parent cut; verified by 3 COAs — S1 unverified. No lab terpene data specific to any S1 seed line was found, so the S1's dominant terpene is Unverified. For the parent cut, limonene is the most frequent top terpene across licensed-market certificates of analysis: Klutch at 1.53% (2.44% total), CALYXI Michigan at 0.80%, and Pleasantrees Michigan at 0.55%. Because selfing redistributes the parent's alleles, S1 plants should broadly fall within the same limonene, caryophyllene, and linalool family, with variation from plant to plant.
Linalool — Parent cut, repeatedly measured; S1 unverified. Measured as a secondary in every parent-cut panel: 0.56% at Klutch, 0.38% at CALYXI, 0.21% at Pleasantrees, 0.34% in the Ayo batch. Sigma Seeds attributes the soapy marker note to linalool, but that is interpretation from a single retail source.
Caryophyllene — Parent cut; ranking disputed. Present in all parent-cut panels at 0.35% to 0.53%. LIT Farms' S1 retail copy lists myrcene, caryophyllene, and limonene, and the aggregator StrainWeaver ranks caryophyllene first, which conflicts with the parent-cut certificates of analysis that put limonene ahead of it.
Myrcene — S1 retail copy only, unverified. Named first in LIT Farms' S1 copy and listed on GrowDiaries' S1 page alongside limonene, caryophyllene, and linalool. It does not appear as a leading terpene in any parent-cut certificate of analysis, so this is retail copy rather than measurement.
Pinene — Parent cut, minor. Measured at 0.36% by CALYXI and 0.42% by Pleasantrees in parent-cut flower. Not reported for the S1.
Nerolidol — Outlier batch. One Ayo batch in Louisiana led with trans-nerolidol at 1.27%, ahead of linalool at 0.34% and limonene at 0.33%. This is evidence that "Permanent Marker" sold at retail varies by cut and grower rather than a profile to expect.
Aroma: The parent cut is verified across Leafly, Doja, and Klutch as smelling like a felt-tip marker, with floral, soapy, candy, and gassy funk; Doja calls it "super sweet yet funky, earthy, diesel-ridden, and candy-like," Klutch calls it "floral, sweet, soapy, gassy, chemical funkiness," and Leafly's Strain of the Year piece calls it grape candy-gas. For the seed line itself, the most useful report comes from a grower who harvested a batch of Permanent Marker S1s (the breeder was not named in that post, so which S1 line it was is Unknown) and wrote: "LOUD. These are obscenely loud. And greasy," with the whole batch falling "on the candy-gas spectrum, some being almost pure sweet candy with a little funk, to pure obnoxious gas with some chemical sweetness." A Reddit grower of the Seed Junky S1 said the "smell is exactly on point." Retail copy adds floral, spicy, soapy, sweet, and funky for the Seed Junky S1, "sharp and reminiscent of permanent ink, with a subtle undertone of spiciness" for the LIT S1, and burnt rubber, chemical, gas, and funk for the Copycat S1. The verified read is that S1 plants are loud, ranging to room-clearing, and sit on a candy-to-gas axis with chemical and soapy accents, with individual plants skewing candy or gas.
Flavor: For the parent cut, Leafly reports that the marker, floral, soapy, candy, and gassy notes "fully translate into the taste," leaving a lingering soapy-funk flavour with candy and floral gas tones. No S1-specific flavour panel or review beyond the aroma reports above was found, so the expectation is the same candy-to-gas spread with soapy and chemical accents, varying by plant.
Effects & Experience
Onset: For the parent cut, Doja describes "an uplifting yet buzzing and focusing high that creeps into carefree sedation." S1-specific onset is Unverified.
Parent cut: Leafly says it "can support creativity or relaxation day and night. Just be careful — it's strong," and Klutch labels it indica-leaning at 70/30. For the S1, GrowDiaries lists uplifted, euphoric, and relaxed with dry eyes, dry mouth, and paranoia as negatives, but that is database copy rather than a controlled report, so S1-specific effects are otherwise Unverified. A creeping, potent, uplifted-then-relaxing hybrid effect is the reasonable expectation based on the parent. On potency, parent-cut retail tests run 23% (Pleasantrees), 24.8% (Ayo), 26.66% (CALYXI), and 27.88% (Klutch), while every S1 figure is a breeder or retail claim with no certificate of analysis behind it.
Duration: Unverified. No duration data exists for the S1, and the parent cut is described only as strong and creeping.
Commonly Reported Uses
Grower's Notes
Treat a pack of Permanent Marker S1 as a phenotype hunt, not a copy of the clone. Seed Junky Genetics, Atlas Seed through Multiverse Beans, Lit Farms and Elite Clone Seed Company all sell an S1 under this name, so confirm which line you hold before comparing notes. Parent-cut data is labelled as such below.
Growth Structure and Training
Retailers call the stretch average and the canopy medium with sturdy branching; growers describe a segregating pack. One 2026 run of Seed Junky S1s gave a phenotype that stretched at least six feet after the flip and was tied down three times, next to a short, dense, heavily frosted plant, and a craft grower who popped a large pack reported stunted, runty structures. Top or mainline, and leave headroom for a stretcher.
Flowering Time and Harvest
Seed Junky retailers list 56 to 63 days as a breeder claim, and Atlas and Multiverse give eight to ten weeks with phenotypes finishing within about a week of each other. Grower logs run longer, still in flower at day 47 and into week nine. The retailer's late September to early October outdoor finish rests on a single diary.
Nutrient Management
A coco grower on reverse-osmosis water, running Elite Clone Seed Company stock, hit yellowing and purpling at week five on only 1 ml/L of CalMag; responders diagnosed calcium and magnesium underfeeding and suggested EC 1.6 to 1.8 at peak flower. A living-soil grower in a Build-A-Soil 3.0 Earthbox burned seedlings with transplant amendments instead. The parent cut's growers describe a plant that likes to eat and wants extra micronutrients under bright light.
Environment and Climate
Every documented run is indoors under LED, five LED runs against one HID on GrowDiaries, and after burning seedlings the soil grower settled near 350 PPFD at 24 inches. No S1-specific light target exists, retail claims of outdoor suitability rest on one diary, and the 42 to 48% late-flower humidity figure in circulation is clone guidance.
Pest and Disease Resistance
No S1-specific pest or mould report was found. Guides for the clone warn that dense colas invite botrytis in humid late flower, unverified for seed plants but consistent with the structure, so move air below the canopy and thin the interior.
Yield
Marketing gives no usable number; the line is sold only as "above average." The 450 to 550 g/m² figure in circulation is a GrowDiaries editorial blurb, not a measured harvest, and the single 42 g per plant record on that page sits inside a multi-strain diary. The parent cut is a medium yielder that goes big or small with the grower's skill.
Bud Structure and Trichomes
Resin is the one point every account agrees on: dense, greasy buds with orange pistils in retail copy, one short phenotype called very dense in trichomes, and a harvested batch described as obscenely loud and greasy. Nose varies more than structure, with one large pop running from sweet candy to obnoxious gas with chemical sweetness.
Color Development
Purple is not an established S1 trait. Sigma Seeds reports it in Sherb-leaning phenotypes without dropping nights below 18 °C, but that is clone context, and the purple in the documented coco run was on stems and leaves and read as a deficiency.
Drying and Curing
Nothing S1-specific has been published, so a slow dry near 60 °F and 60% relative humidity over 10 to 14 days followed by a jar cure is the default. Sigma notes for Permanent Marker generally that the soapy marker note is volatile and builds late, so do not chop early.
Wash and Extraction
No S1 wash yield has been published. Klutch's live hash rosin from the clone is labelled 3.51% total terpenes with limonene at 2%, while one r/rosin processor reported sub-1% returns from several Permanent Marker seed packs of unstated origin and about 3% from a Donny Burger x Permanent Marker cross, against a typical fresh-frozen return of 3 to 6%. Test-wash a keeper before committing it to solventless.
History & Origin
Between 2019 and 2021, Seed Junky Genetics' JBeezy bred and selected the Permanent Marker cut; sister phenotypes from the same (Biscotti S1 x Sherb Bx1) x Jealousy F2 seeds were released as Adios MF and Gunnpowwder, the latter picked by Berner for the Cookies brand Minntz. In January 2022 the $1,000 clones were released, followed by Doja's global marketing wave through spring and summer 2022; SeedFinder dates the launch to June 2022 on both coasts, and another clone drop followed on December 15, 2022. On May 13, 2023, Seed Junky dropped feminized Permanent Marker crosses at Supreme Seed Bank — Scratch and Sniff, RS11 x PM, and Banana Cream Cake x PM — rather than the S1. Later in 2023 Permanent Marker was named Leafly Strain of the Year, back to back with Jealousy in 2022. By early 2024, Seed Junky's own feminized Permanent Marker S1 was available through SeedJunkyGenetics.com at about $200 per pack, with resellers later listing it as high as $450. The same community thread reports that Seed Junky's seed site had been down "for quite a few months" and that JBeezy had gone quiet on social media; that is a single community report and is Unverified. Through 2024, third-party S1s from LIT Farms and others circulated, and grower harvests of Permanent Marker S1s were posted publicly, including one batch documented in August 2024. The exact release date of any of these S1 lines remains Unknown.
